That's what will make it so unsettling though. For literally generations, she's been the queen - the one on the money, on the stamps, opening Parliament, all of those things that we don't necessarily notice, but which form part of the background to life. There's only one member of my family who'd remember her not being the queen, and she's 94 herself! All the rest of us, three generations now, have only known the queen. There's been continuity for decades and then suddenly we'll be singing the national anthem differently, and all those other things will change too - maybe not overnight, but they will. Plus there will I'm sure be calls for the monarchy to be abolished (which I can sympathise with) - I don't think they'll succeed, but they'll be there. It's going to unsettle people more that they expect I think - not because of any deep love for the woman, but because she's just always been there in the background. And she'll be gone.
