Russia cutting off gaa supplies.. How worried should Europeans be?

Russia switched off the gas to Germany on Wednesday, they said it was for maintenance & for 2 days only . Russia announced this morning due to more maintenance needed they won't be switching it on as planned & gave no date for it to be switched on... I find this very scary & the winter is already predicted to be bitterly cold (can't find link to weather prediction)

@woodhill a generator is a great idea. I feel like the government is drip feeding warnings to us. It would be daft not to prepare a little.

woodhill · 04/09/2022 14:46

I hope so😀

We have a gas hob and a whistle kettle

It wasn't cheap

Fallonangel · 04/09/2022 15:01

Yes we have a gas hob. Stupid question but I know it needs an electric spark to light.
But if I just turn the gas on and light a match will it still light?

Metabigot · 04/09/2022 15:01

They're selling wind up radio torches on amazon for £30 odd and you can even power your phone off them. Ideal for those unexpected blackout moments

woodhill · 04/09/2022 15:02

Yes I think so or a candle lighterSmile

Some gas hobs might work without electricity but some will have a safety cut out if there's no electricity for the ignition.

We are incredibly lucky to have fixed our energy prices until next October, but we will still be cutting back Gas use as the more demand for it the higher the prices will go. This country needs a rethink about heating and insulating our homes.

This was written pre-Ukraine war but is an interesting comparison between how the UK and Norway dealt with their oil and gas deposits www.heraldscotland.com/politics/19716393.actually-happened-scotlands-trillions-north-sea-oil-boom/

Thank you!
I'm wondering though about blackouts. How do you stop food in freezer going off if there are blackouts?

I pay £20 a month for a swim only membership.

Some people wouldn't be able to manage that. With a tiny bill like that it also sounds like a solo household without children.

I shower at my gym and my last months bill for gas and electric was £38.46

I think it's fine for a few hours? Beyond that I don't know.

Fallonangel · 04/09/2022 15:36

From what I think will happen freezers will be OK. Blackouts will prob be from 10pm until 6am initially. A freezer is OK for 24hrs as long as door is kept shut.

Fallonangel · 04/09/2022 15:39

But I think the sensible plan would be not to have freezers full just in case.

BorgQueen · 04/09/2022 15:47

How can we have all night blackouts when lots of people need life saving equipment running? My Sister would suffocate for a start.
What about care homes and sheltered housing? They won’t have back up generators like hospitals do ( if they still have them?).
They should mandate non essential factory/retail park shut downs before turning any power off, the power use of something like an Amazon warehouse must be gigantic and that energy would power dozens of homes.

Fallonangel · 04/09/2022 15:55

Those in need of medical equipment will be given temporary generators. In my aunts village they had no power for 3 weeks after the storms. Generators were provided for those that needed them. Care homes and hospitals have generators or the access to them.

Crocwok · 04/09/2022 16:12

Blackouts are usually managed as in its decided where on the grid to prioritise and others are cut off to ensure we don't exceed the amount that's available.

Dannexe · 04/09/2022 16:46

We are currently selling gas to other nations because we produce it and don't need nearly as much in summer. Come winter we will totally be playing the "but we already gave you gas" morality card.

we aren’t. we privatised it
