Russia cutting off gaa supplies.. How worried should Europeans be?

Ewetoo · 03/09/2022 08:30

Russia switched off the gas to Germany on Wednesday, they said it was for maintenance & for 2 days only . Russia announced this morning due to more maintenance needed they won't be switching it on as planned & gave no date for it to be switched on... I find this very scary & the winter is already predicted to be bitterly cold (can't find link to weather prediction)

well we can agree to disagree

I read your header there @Ewetoo and was wondering what supplies the GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association) was getting from Russia and why there might be a thread on Mumsnet about it. It must have been a big deal for it to make it on to Mumsnet!

Then I opened the thread.....and now I'll get my coat! 😂 😆

I did the same!

And plenty of people die drom Hypothermia in many other countries. Its a terrible thing but it doesn't make it any worse because its happening to UK citizens.
Why do some feel we are so 'special'. We have just experienced a higher standard of living at the expense of others. Now the table is turning.

Did you just suggest that the UK has been cruel in the past?? On Mumsnet? Are you asking to be banned? 😂

Chowbellow · 03/09/2022 17:19

FreddyHG · 03/09/2022 11:29

The west has become too self centered we demand living standards that require high energy usage funded by gadgets and resources made in countries with terrible rights records. We look the other way when buying Saudi oil we buy russian fertilizer and buy consumer electronics from China. The east has dined out on higher living standards and now it's time to pay the price.

And it's a high price.

People will NEED to heat their homes in winter. It's not about driving an SUV or having hot water 24/7.

It's funny how people in Africa don't NEED anything apparently.

Chowbellow · 03/09/2022 17:22

yanxy · 03/09/2022 11:37

There is no universal law that those in the UK must have heating and power just because they demand it. Theses attitudes are at best embarrassing

Im not sure why it's embarrassing, without heat or power people would struggle to access food or clean water. I don't understand the sanctimonious attitude some take tbh.

I don't know. I wasn't born in Somalia or Ethiopia. Those things we deem normal are not normal for vast swathes of the world.

Rainbowcat99 · 03/09/2022 17:40

(I also bought an Oodie AND an airfryer @Rainbowcat99 and the air fryer was a helpful tip from someone else, rarely use the oven now.. is that okay with you?)

You can do what you like, unfortunately millions of people don't have the disposable income to nip out to the shops and get air fryers, electric blankets and oodies before winter arrives. I'm more concerned about them than about people who feel smug because they delayed their luxury holiday for a while 🤷🏿‍♀️

felulageller · 03/09/2022 17:43

If someone is above the savings threshold to get benefits it means they have over £16k which I wouldn't describe as 'small'.

I think in general working/ disabled/ families on UC or other means tested benefits should be able to have more in savings (to buy a house/ mobility aids/car etc) but using part of over £16k to pay a fuel bill isn't unreasonable imo.

Just because you don't have something doesn't mean you don't need it.

For those that would rather let Putin have Ukraine so we can keep the cheap gas flowing, is him taking Germany okay? What about Poland or Italy?
Ukraine was formerly part of the Soviet Union. So “taking it back” is different to invading a European country like Italy. I’d be quite happy for Russia to have its Soviet countries back and leave us alone.

@Dadaya Shall we split up Germany again as well, seeing as Eastern Germany used to be part of the Soviet Union? Or would you draw a line at "taking back" a bigger nation that's not traditionally seen as Eastern European?

Stupid comment, honestly.

yanxy · 03/09/2022 16:15

@YellowHouze there's nothing wrong with going to the gym to shower or having a gym membership, the issue is framing it around taking personal responsibility.

Yes quite. Horrible sanctimonious tone too.

heldinadream · 03/09/2022 19:18

@Dadaya please, let's chuck Putin Poland, East Germany, Albania, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Romania, Czechoslovakia, and Hungary while we're at it. It's all 'Russia's Soviet countries' isn't it?
FFS.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 03/09/2022 19:23

I don’t think Yugoslavia was part of Russia.

Maybe we could restore the great British Empire too? 🙄
Russia isn't the only leader who has designs on world domination.

@Chowbellow What is your gripe?

LaMagdalena · 03/09/2022 21:57

I'm just going to leave this here...

@Chowbellow What is your gripe?

My gripe is that I won't be able to heat my home this winter and I'm FUCKING PISSED OFF.

woodhill · 03/09/2022 22:11

Fair enough

LastTrainEast · 04/09/2022 01:13

I''d agree that we need to take action to deal with the energy situation, but I'm not sure what ordinary people can do other then pressure the government to get their act together.

Those of us in rented accommodation generally can't get solar panels, heat pumps etc even if we had any spare money to spend on them and who has now with the huge increases we're already paying for.

Maybe I'm missing something but the way the energy cap works if we are careful to limit use will that not lower the 'typical/average bill' and automatically cause the price cap to rise further?

And more generally if we can manage to import less will that not trigger price increases as those selling it want to keep their income.

I can't remember whether the 1970s blackouts were planned or not, but I certainly read by candlelight, near the coal fire in the those days, until the electricity came back on.
Rationing everyone gets more than one message over.

Do some sick people rely on a constant source of energy to power something which they use at home? Would that be a problem to the 'no electricity from 7 until 10' sort of plan?

Yes, the blackouts were timed. I remember studying by candlelight, sitting next to the coal fire. It’s not a situation I ever believed that we might return to, but here we are.

And that’s the point. Putin won’t stop at Ukraine. He will move on to the Baltic States, followed by Poland and will threaten Germany. He’s already doing that by cutting off the gas supplies that Germany is so reliant on. He’s threatened Sweden and Finland when they dared to apply to join NATO. All of this political instability will continue to negatively impact the rest of us in the West. We do not exist in a political vacuum.

Ukraine is legitimately fighting to retain its independence in what is essentially a proxy war between the West and Russia instigated by Putin. If Ukraine falls - and I very much hope it doesn’t - it won’t stop there.

Yes if they can constantly build houses why aren't we building gas storage, absolutely ridiculous

Centrica has been given the go ahead to develop the UK’s biggest gas storage facility www.energyvoice.com/oilandgas/north-sea/440350/nsta-gives-centrica-green-light-to-reopen-rough-gas-storage-site/

Ok stupid question, it's late. That map above showing all the previous countries of the USSR, why has he picked Ukraine to invade out of all of them? I'm presuming it's Ukraine's abundance in natural resources, incredible agricultural land etc.

I just dreamt I was challenging Putin in the street, I was really gunning for him!

This doesn't really answer your question, but he also invaded Georgia in 2008. He had already annexed Crimea in Ukraine (which many Russians believe should have stayed Russian previously) and started the war in the Donbas back in 2014, so he didn't just suddenly start this in 2022. Belarus is already under a pro-Russia dictatorship. So it seems he's already working his way through a few of them.
