Russia cutting off gaa supplies.. How worried should Europeans be?

Russia switched off the gas to Germany on Wednesday, they said it was for maintenance & for 2 days only . Russia announced this morning due to more maintenance needed they won't be switching it on as planned & gave no date for it to be switched on... I find this very scary & the winter is already predicted to be bitterly cold (can't find link to weather prediction)

I've not judged anyone. I might also die of Hypothermia but at least Il die clean

yanxy · 03/09/2022 15:10

Like I said some self awareness, maybe reread your posts.

Ewetoo · 03/09/2022 15:15

When do you think the govt will actually admit to the public the West is in a war with Russia but it's a different type of war & energy is the main weapon? Putin is going to win unless he's done away with or overthrown, that's the reality unfortunately imo...

Ukraine was formerly part of the Soviet Union. So “taking it back” is different to invading a European country like Italy. I’d be quite happy for Russia to have its Soviet countries back and leave us alone.

And that I think illustrates my point exactly

I think it's unlikely that the govt will ever say "right we're at war with Russia now" unless they drop a bomb somewhere that we completely can't ignore.
The media might start referring to it as an "energy war" or something snappier in that drip feedy way that we know so well though.
A big "we are at war" announcement would do more harm than good as mass panic needs to be avoided at all costs.
I hope that they'll start to look at other energy rationing measures apart from making it more expensive so only the rich can actually afford it, because that's a terrible position for our country to be in.

Fallonangel · 03/09/2022 15:23

@yanxy That last comment was meant to be an attempt to add some humour to lighten the tone.
Its awful for everyone and I'm just as worried. But winding myself up and preparing for my imminet death is not a mentally healthy way to live for me.
I can't say anything right and it's clear I'm making your mood worse.
I hope you survive the winter. Best Wishes

yanxy · 03/09/2022 15:25

I'm fine, I just don't like superiority & sanctimony 🤷🏻‍♀️

BuenoSucia · 03/09/2022 15:27

Tbh I get the gym thing. I was beyond a skint thing in 2008, my MH was low and I was scared to turn my boiler in or even look at the fucker in case it broke. My gym was in the same complex as my office, so going meant an improvement in my MH, clean… and I’d actually turn up to work.

The U.K exports over £3.4 billion of gas to Europe each year! This beggers belief!

Yes if they can constantly build houses why aren't we building gas storage, absolutely ridiculous

absolutelyanythingwilldo · 03/09/2022 15:35

Let's all have a good old worry. That always solves things I find.

woodhill · 03/09/2022 15:37

Fallonangel · 03/09/2022 11:55

No because I took some personal responsibility and made lifestyle changes.
I put off my expensive summer holiday so that I had a cash reserve.
I shower at my gym and my last months bill for gas and electric was £38.46.

But you can afford a gym membership and have time to go

Many can't

I would definitely like more information from the press. How bad can this get? How fast could it escalate? Can anyone tell Putin's state of mind?
It was obvious to everyone he was going to cut the gas supply...

You still need the gas for use, so you then need to put excess in storage if you can even afford that, which as we’ve seen, has been problematic for the EU.

Germany has some 240 TWh of storage for gas, the largest in Europe if I recall. That’s two months of total usage if things are average. If it’s a cold winter, you can maybe half that.

Storage is not the solution. Using less gas is.

Liebig · 03/09/2022 15:50

Halve, even. Damn lack of edit.

Anyway, point remains. Fracking and storage etc. are not addressing the problem, simply kicking the can down the road. The North Sea is declining fast, and it now accounts for only 50% of UK energy usage, with the rest being imports from Norway, Qatar and the US.

woodhill · 03/09/2022 16:04

At least if it was stored it would mean we weren't so reliant on other countries

People still need to use it at the moment

YellowHouze · 03/09/2022 16:05

@Fallonangel I agree with you. My DH’a gym membership costs a lot more than yours does but I still think it’s a good thing that he showers there every day and feel like that offsets the gym membership cost a little bit.

No, he doesn’t go to the gym to save money, and I don’t think you claimed that either.

There is a bit of a thing on mumsnet at the moment where no-one is allowed to talk about cutting costs unless they are in absolute poverty, or they are shouted down for being ridiculous and too privileged.

We had one holiday this year instead of two. Saying this doesn’t make me “tone deaf” ; I’m not on a site (or a thread) only for people who are struggling to eat each day. And neither are you - you are allowed to go to the gym and I’m glad it’s good for your mental health
💐

(I also bought an Oodie AND an airfryer @Rainbowcat99 and the air fryer was a helpful tip from someone else, rarely use the oven now.. is that okay with you?)

YellowHouze · 03/09/2022 16:07

woodhill · 03/09/2022 15:37

@woodhill - And many can. What is your point?

woodhill · 03/09/2022 16:08

That those on the breadline or low incomes can't afford a gym membership and probably can't even afford their essential billsSmile

Ewetoo · 03/09/2022 16:13

I think the gym is a good thing too if you enjoy or can afford.. Definitely shower there to get your money's worth. The physical & mental health benefits of exercise are so important.

OP posts:
YellowHouze · 03/09/2022 16:13

Yes, we are all aware of that. However isn’t a thread about people on low incomes who are asking for advice.

The poster who dared mention showering at the gym was sharing her own experience in relation to the way she feels about rising energy bills (see OP).

She didn’t claim that everyone else is in the same situation or suggest that anyone else did the same.

yanxy · 03/09/2022 16:15

@YellowHouze there's nothing wrong with going to the gym to shower or having a gym membership, the issue is framing it around taking personal responsibility.

upinaballoon · 03/09/2022 16:26

If I die of hypothermia this winter what will it feel like? Will it be painful? How many days will it take to die? I am not being flippant. At my age the way I'll die is definitely something I think about.
When people die in snowdrifts is it that they become exhausted and fall and then can't get up and fall asleep and die from the cold? Can you do the same inside a cold house?

BuenoSucia · 03/09/2022 16:33

No. Hypothermia makes you feel hot and you’ll take all your clothes off. Seriously. You’ll be dead by morning as you’ll just fall asleep and not wake up.

RayneDance · 03/09/2022 16:45

On twitter loads of stuff is coming up About what others EU countries are doing
Apparently they have less inflation, less high rates!

YellowHouze · 03/09/2022 16:56

@yanxy - I don’t think that poster was framing it around anything, just sharing why she isn’t too worried.
