Justanotherwinter · 02/09/2022 11:04

But classy if you’re rich? I’ll start…

cocaine
floor beds for children
Speaking a second language
Day drinking
babysitters

The lack of comprehension on this thread is hilarious

detached and aloof=posh
clueless=chavvy

SD1978 · 03/09/2022 00:50

I'm finding it funny the responders still not seeing the point of this- and very funny the examples- they are so true and I'd really never thought about it before. Also would like to add unique names, such as India as a contribution.

threepointonefourone · 03/09/2022 01:22

The poor comprehension skills of some contributors is irritating, but tbh it is getting to be comedy gold.

Ive often been struck by the language one.. having 2 sets of very different in-laws, one group who see themselves as superior due to having a second house in italy, and having children who speak that language. Vs the (actually wealthier and better educated… and fat less twatty) in-laws who have a second home in India, and who have children who can speak Hindi.

My neighbour laughs hysterically in her garden whenever her children visit. She cracks open the Pinot Noir in the summer. No different to opening some tins of cider on a council estate and getting your teenage children drunk, but viewed differently in a middle class Georgian area.

Blaggertyjibbet · 03/09/2022 03:42

Timothee Chalemet’s outfit at the Venice film festival.

Blaggertyjibbet · 03/09/2022 03:44

Chalamet (why is there no edit option, MN?)

Mydogatemypurse · 03/09/2022 04:30

Tax avoidance

Crossing a desert in Africa on foot while potentially being shot at, then crossing a body of water in a dinghy

poor: feckless illegal probably after an easy life

rich: daring adventurer, give the man a TV series

Wins the thread!

TheFuckingDogs · 03/09/2022 05:26

Drinking in the park! The lack of understanding of this thread is hilarious too. Needs to go into classics

I think the bilinguialism is very much down to the language interplaying with class: if you're bilingual English and French/Italian, that's seen as the gold standard; if you're bilingual English and Urdu/Polish or, shock horror, two non-western European languages and not fluent in English, that's not well regarded.

I agree and also dialects, Jamaican Patois is not valued as a language.

Little Tarquin learning Mandarin at a Saturday club v Lily learning Mandarin from granny while mum and dad wok in the chip shop are seen as different things.

I did some linguistics at uni and we talked about languages having a 'currency' so speaking 3-4 Asian languages is not valued as highly as speaking 2 European languages.

I'll add in packed lunch / picnic. One is to be enjoyed before / during a live classical music event and is posh, the other means you cannot afford to use a cafe.

Having lots of one night stands in your 20s.
Owning ponies.

Getting married 4 times.
Swearing.

Where do the middle and lower classes stand on 'pegging'? Just asking for a friend who's moving to Windsor soon.

One id guess is expected part of action, the other, darling pass the strapon and lube.

fatgirlslimmer · 03/09/2022 05:52

Tax avoidance, claiming allowable expenses from the state and using questionable saving schemes.

Rich = Creative
Poor = Criminal

fatgirlslimmer · 03/09/2022 05:53

Oops I meant

Creative Accountancy

Criminal Activity

Boris - numerous children by many mothers

Local council estate - "single mothers raising a generation of "ill-raised, ignorant, aggressive and illegitimate children" to quote Boris

Notjustabrunette · 03/09/2022 06:36

Yes, that’s the point. If you were from a ‘poor’ family sleeping on a mattress on the floor is seen as a bad thing as can’t afford a proper bed. If the have money and can afford a bed, it’s seen as a practical solution to small kids getting in and out of bed.

Thisismynamenow · 03/09/2022 06:37

Justanotherwinter · 02/09/2022 11:34

I’m working class. I grew up in poverty. On a council estate. If you don’t get the post, don’t join in. It’s harmless

@Justanotherwinter I always find it funny the only people who get offended by the word chav are the middle class people who have never stepped into an estate.

I'm working class as was a "chav" growing up. The word chav was never a comment on someone's life status on our estate, was the equivalent of a skinhead/mod/grebo/goth. It was a lifestyle type - fake Burbury print, trackies, weed, modified car, baseball caps and roaming the streets with groups of friends drinking on a park. It was never derogatory really.

Anyway for your post, rebellious kids.. boys will be boys if you're from Eton, scum and boys without boundaries if your from a comp.

I love this thread. The posts that get it are shrewd, witty observations and the ones that don't are hilarious.

Ditto 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Notjustabrunette · 03/09/2022 06:50

I remember Katie Hopkins banging on about how she wouldn’t let her children be friends with children with certain names. She included in her list of undesirable names ‘place’ names. It was pointed out that she has a child called India.

RecHarged · 03/09/2022 07:01

I’ve always said that dependant on your postcode you will be judged differently for the same circumstances! It’s VERY obvious where we live (London borough but an area that’s either MC and quite wealthy or extremely deprived nothing in between) and this thread is spot on !!
