I read somewhere that new furniture, (especially if it’s “matchy matchy”) is not very well regarded. It suggests you don’t inherit furniture and/or that you don’t appreciate well made old/vintage/antique furniture.

That was Alan Clark ,a particularly unpleasant Tory minister who published his diaries in which he made the comment about Michael Heseltine ( who most people would assume was fairly posh) that Heseltine was an arriviste who had had to buy his own furniture.

Gender reveals
Fake nails
Fake boobs
Being severely underweight
Wearing sportswear in non-sport settings

Yes there is chavvy skinny, which looks ill/malnourished and ‘rich girl skinny’ - both skinny but give off very different vibes.

Titsflyingsouth · 02/09/2022 19:25

Hate the word chavvy but do get the point you are trying to make about double-standards.

My list:
Drinking alcohol in parks

Having old, beaten-up furniture

Wearing designer clothes

Giving babies ludicrously complicated baby names

kids climbing trees and building dens etc

Gambling

JMAngel1 · 02/09/2022 19:46

Soooo true!

justmaybenot · 02/09/2022 14:51

Speaking a second language is chavvy? You sound racist and really unpleasant.

Not at all. It's not racist to point out racism. And if you don't get it then try looking Asian and speaking a language that is not English in public.

MangosteenSoda · 02/09/2022 20:29

Living in a mansion.

Quite disappointed at how many totally misunderstood the thread overall and lots of posts in the thread.

The point of this thread is the HYPOCRISY of the class system.

it’s not vilifying the poor, it’s pointing out the double standards

Massive lack of comprehension going on around here.

Add 'Massive lack of comprehension' to the list

on this thread, it's 'classed up' as faux naïvety

🙄

I have no problem with the word chav. People who behave badly OUGHT to be shamed. They ruin other people’s lives. That silly little twerp Owen Jones wrote a book titled ‘Chav: Demonisation of the Working Class’. Ugghh, so smug. As if people can’t distinguish between a chav and ordinary working class people! Only an utter cretin would judge someone by how much money they’ve got. When I describe someone as a chav, I mean that they are:

Rude
Ignorant
Confrontational (usually over nothing)
Incapable of holding a civilised conversation
Incapable of settling disputes in a calm, sensible way
Incapable of keeping their voice down
Don’t instil morals or manners in their children
Exploit the benefit system
Allow their vicious, ignorant kids to ruin the neighbourhood
Drive around in idiotic cars with screeching engines and loud exhausts
Ignorant and boring
Laugh at rape jokes
Cruel to animals
Walk past you with their hoods up stinking of weed
Should be discouraged from having kids

Above all, they are people who simply don’t know how to behave.

You can be a rich chav. And you can live on the streets yet be the most intelligent, charming, well-mannered person in Britain.

You are the only person who describes chavs in this way

Justanotherwinter · 02/09/2022 21:16

@NippyWoowoo agreed, and I find it quite offensive. She’s describing a scumbag, not someone on a low income that lives in a council house. No need to the link the two.

Poor family leave kids alone and something happens to one of them. The kids get taken away. Most likely!

MC family do the same. They keep the kids..

My DH chatted to a teacher at his place of work about the summer.

The rich kids came back with a tan whilst the poor kids came back with a new surname.
