Where are we buying our Children's winter coats ?

DC both need winter coats.
DS is 8 and DD is 6.
We walk to school so must be warm and waterproof, able to wear a backpack over it.
We sometimes cycle or scooter to school so needs to be flexible and easy to move in.
So far I've never found one that meets all our needs! Especially as they often get muddy and after a couple of washes even with the nikwax stuff, they lose their waterproofing.

Any recommendations? 🙏🏼

I usually get DDs (7) from Asda, they're really good coats to be fair!

mynameischloe · 02/09/2022 08:58

M&S do really good ones. Or I look for Boden/Joules/M&S on Vinted/eBay, you can get some amazing bargains on there, OP.

The kids I look after wear polarn y pyret coats. Very pricy bought new but they get passed down and sold on when both kids have outgrown them.

TravellingSpoon · 02/09/2022 09:00

Ebay!

ThisisCollie2022 · 02/09/2022 09:00

The Next parka coats are great. We got DS's in the sale for £10 (back in the Sunmer!)

Horcruxe · 02/09/2022 09:01

I usually buy the outdoor type ones.

E.g. regatta, trespass.

Really well made, waterproof and warm.

Cornishmumofone · 02/09/2022 09:02

I'd go for Asda. They have reflective puffa jackets again this year.

Dontstoprunning · 02/09/2022 09:04

I like coats from Next, Mountain warehouse and Regatta for my children.
I'm sure I've seen waterproof spray that you can spray onto coats etc if they lose it.
Vinted is really good for coats, I got both my sons winter coats on there last year

Sprogonthetyne · 02/09/2022 09:07

I usually get a hiking outdoors type one from mountain warehouse, but I buy them in march for about £10, and put them away. I know this doesn't help you now, but might be an option for next year.

Sammilouwho · 02/09/2022 09:07

We have a villervalla one this year, bought second hand from vinted. It's lovely and thick!
Last year's was from gap and it was brilliant :)

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 02/09/2022 09:09

Joules or Next. Debenhams has some regatta coats in the sale recently

QuintessentialHedgehog · 02/09/2022 09:10

Polarn o pyret. Pricy but completely warm/waterproof/breathable, and can be bought second hand or in the sale/with a discount code. Many are unisex in style so can be passed down from DS to DD. They come in different weights, and for winter you can choose either a thicker padded winter style or a shell coat with a fleece that poppers in to it.

rainbowsandstarshine · 02/09/2022 09:13

I always get mine ski jackets.

Luxembourgmama · 02/09/2022 09:17

Reima or polarn o pyret. Good value second hand.

GoAround · 02/09/2022 09:18

Patagonia. Once out of baby years I get 2 years of heavy use out of them and then hand them down as they still look pristine, and if for some reason they don’t then they can apparently be repaired.

NerrSnerr · 02/09/2022 09:23

I always get ours second hand from the charity shop as there's always really good quality coats for £2-4ish.

BertieBotts · 02/09/2022 09:29

I used to go to mountain warehouse and see what they had in there. They are good quality and not priced for fashion but utility. I liked the ones that were fleece that clips into a waterproof outer so you can change it for the seasons.

Thinking about it if you have a decathlon that's a great source of outdoor stuff too so their coats ought to be good.

Aldi and Lidl do good two piece waterproof sets in the autumn.

Username917778 · 02/09/2022 09:30

Trespass normally have good reductions so you get a waterproof toasty jacket for less than £30!

Rainallnight · 02/09/2022 09:30

Frugi, though I don’t like the patterns this year.

Decafflatteplease · 02/09/2022 09:31

Frugi or m and s here

dockspider · 02/09/2022 09:41

As above, POP/Reima/Didriksons. Yes they’re expensive but if you can make the initial
outlay buy a neutral colour and they can very easily be passed on/resold. I’ve got one Didriksons coat that has now gone through 5 kids and it’s still in great shape, my 3yo will wear it to outdoor nursery this winter.

Ifyouknowyouknowyouknow · 02/09/2022 09:45

Polarn o pyret fan here. £80 new but I usually buy them on eBay for £10-20 and they’re on the third kids in our family and will then probably sell them on for only a little less than what we paid for them.

Polarn o pyret will also repair their items for free even if you bought them second hand. They are perfect imo - warm, waterproof, not too bulky, nice colours with reflective bits, good zips and you can add or remove the fleeces to the shell jackets to change the weight. The fleeces are also great by themselves in warmer weather and also waterproof.

Buzzinwithbez · 02/09/2022 09:47

Tk maxx worth a look - I got a regatta one for my daughter let year.

Otherwise, outdoor shops. One search for outdoor brand in Amazon too... Peter storm is another decently priced maker of outdoor wear.

RoutineLow · 02/09/2022 09:47

Normally Boden parkas but I don’t like the pattern this year so I’m still looking. They are a bit expensive but we get 2 years out of them.
