As the summer comes to an end, what excites you about autumn?

I am weird but I love this time of year. Things I look forward to are..
• chunky knits
• nice boots
• that feeling when your freezing and you walk into a warm building
• buying nice candles
• settling down with the kids on a sat night to watch a movie with treats ( normally they play out till Bath/bed time in summer)

I'm sure there's more.

What's yours ?

I’ve found the opposite - as DH and I are getting older winter seems endless and tougher to get through.

wineandsunshine · 22/08/2023 20:42

@Ori1 totally agree!

I love autumn 🍂 especially a cosy blanket on the sofa with a hot choc!

Vicliz24 · 22/08/2023 20:50

I'm already sad at the night's drawing in . Can't bear the dark unremitting cold and wet of winter.

Hibernatalie · 22/08/2023 20:51

Blankets on the sofa
Pumpkin spiced latte
Muddy walks
Bakewell tart
Pumpkin pie
Roasts
Historical fiction
Starting to get excited about Christmas

I'm afraid I'm in the nothing camp as well.

Making lists of what's great about something is what you have to do if it's not great.

Same. I'm always confused by some of the things (cliches) that make it onto the autumn lists... crunchy leaves (enjoyable how?) boots and jumpers (don't see how you look forward to these exactly - surely you just wear them?)

lljkk · 22/08/2023 20:54

Christmas break when I can jet off to somewhere with high temps & sunshine.

veryberrypericherry · 22/08/2023 21:04

I also loved this post and am so glad it's resurfaced.

I love little trips out to collect conkers and leaves. My kids are getting to the end of that now but I still work with little ones so love to take in Autumnal bits for them.

Also just the sense of cosy autumnness, being back in a warm house with a hot drink after a long day.

We've planned to go to an arboretum in the Autumn as DD and I both love Autumn. She's due her frost baby so hoping for a few big baby bump photos in the trees... 🍁🍂

Inkanta · 22/08/2023 21:10

I get to like Autumn eventually but always grieve the end of summer for first two weeks of September. I'm conditioning myself to like Autumn more and not resist this season. I have friends who love Autumn and they inspire me.

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 22/08/2023 21:10

Even though I love summer, the heat at night is relentless lately. Trying to keep us all cool so I’m looking forward to cooler nights. Hoping we have less rain and can have some days out in park where it may be colder but hopefully dryer.

We just ordered a load of logs for our burner. Getting stocked up early if we can so it can dry a bit before we need it.

Inkanta · 22/08/2023 21:12

I always look forward to Strictly!

I always look forward to Strictly!

Me too! It feels like the run to Christmas!

I’m also looking forward to wearing clothes I like. Big oversized jumpers with midi skirts.

Readaboutyourself · 22/08/2023 21:15

Oh and boots. I can wear boots again! 🥳

JumpNWave · 22/08/2023 21:19

I like Autumn and winter up until December. After that I usually get depressed with the lack of sunlight. I find Jan, Feb, March hardgoing.

Trying to be positive I look forward to:

AW clothes, especially boots and tights and turtle necks! No more hair removal, fake tanning or pedicures 👊

Winter TV - much better than summer.

My electric blanket <gimmer>, hot water bottles, fleecy onesies & thick socks

Autumn walks

Stodgy food like soups, stews & roasts (and crumble!)

TerrorOwls · 22/08/2023 21:26

I like Autumn til the clocks change! I hate that it gets dark so early.
Summer is wonderful for the light and the after dinner leisurely walks. I like brisk autumn walks but the dark puts a dampener on things.

I do enjoy autumn and winter food. Soups and stews feel comforting and healthy to me.
Autumn is still warm enough to sit in the garden in the evening and the stars come out a bit earlier.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 22/08/2023 21:34

November, December and January are the only months I don't get hay fever, so I bloody love them. September is rarely as autumnal as I'd like, but October is 😍

Love everything about it. Nights drawing in, leaves falling, that autumnal smell in the air. And Christmas is on its way!

Hate hot weather/summer.

RampantIvy · 22/08/2023 21:37

You must live somewhere pretty warm.

What do I like about autumn? The very rare bright days - more enjoyable because they are so rare.

What do I like about winter? Nothing, nothing at all.

sadaboutmycat · 22/08/2023 21:46

Still 4 weeks of Summer yet!

Literally fuck all.

First poster nails it.

Just saw this in trending and first thought was fuck all.

Somethings will never change.

Furries · 22/08/2023 23:33

Sweet FA, especially this year. I think I might have tried to be positive last year on the thread (CBA to trawl back to check).

After a cold and windy spring, followed by a “summer” dominated by constant grey skies, the thought of autumn and winter is really not filling me with joy.

RampantIvy .....actually, I moved to northern Scandinavia because I hate the summer and think that even northern UK is too hot.
And I wasn't disappointed. It was totally dark for 3 months of the year, thick snow or at least frosty for 8 months of the year and our winter temperatures were -25 or more. I totally loved it. I have never been healthier, the air was invigorating, the place utterly beautiful. Even in the summer, when we had 24 hours light, the temperature was about 15 degrees max, but usually around 12 degrees and could fall to 3 degrees in a flash. It could even snow in summer on occasions.

I would happily live in permanent winter if I could. Sadly COVID put a stop to my time in Scandinavia, plus the fact that I just don't have/earn enough money to retire there. Maybe I should try Scotland instead? But even that doesn't quite compare, hardly above the Arctic circle in Scotland.....

That sounds awesome! I'd love that.

CeeJay81 · 23/08/2023 10:20

I love Autumn, its my favourite season. This Summer was total rubbish too, so even more reason to look forward to it this year. Crap weather for most of the school holidays, so I'm thinking we will get better weather in autumn(well I'm hoping!).

I love the Autumn colours, my dd is Halloween mad, so looks forward to that. We've also got a long weekend away in October to look forward too. I love the cosy nights, getting excited about Christmas and I cant wait for the mince pies to be out😋. So yep roll on Autumn🍂🍁🎃🛍, cant wait to say goodbye to this rather soggy Summer.

SirChenjins · 23/08/2023 10:46

I wondered how long it would be before the blankets and hot chocolate appeared. Genuinely don’t get the MN love for a sugar laden hot milk drink (bleurgh)and lying about on the sofa for hours on end under a blanket (yawn) under artificial light or in the semi darkness.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 23/08/2023 10:49

Cool weather! On hols at the mo in SW France - it’s 41 deg! 😩

SirChenjins · 23/08/2023 10:53

Don’t worry, we get cool weather for most of the year in the UK, you don’t have to wait for autumn or winter and all the crap that comes with them.

Neither do I.
