As the summer comes to an end, what excites you about autumn?

I am weird but I love this time of year. Things I look forward to are..
• chunky knits
• nice boots
• that feeling when your freezing and you walk into a warm building
• buying nice candles
• settling down with the kids on a sat night to watch a movie with treats ( normally they play out till Bath/bed time in summer)

I'm sure there's more.

What's yours ?

I love the idea of Autumn and the new start feeling of September but so many of these things are cliches and dont actually happen - we're much more likely to get damp drizzly days than bright crisp ones and after this summer I'd just like a bit of sunshine before either.

Lessstressedhemum · 23/08/2023 11:27

Nothing at all. I hate it from October to April. The nights are already drawing in and there hasn't been a single day above 19 degrees here since June, so this year, it's even worse. The interminable dark, wet and cold is just so depressing.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 23/08/2023 11:29

My electric blanket <gimmer>

You will prise my heated blanket from me at your own risk.

RampantIvy · 23/08/2023 11:33

I'm hoping for an Indian summer to make up for the miserable summer.

Friggingfrog · 23/08/2023 11:56

I usually look forward to autumn. Love the feel of back to school and a new year - feels more like a new year to me than January which is probably because I work in schools. I enjoy the colours of the leaves and going for walks in them with the dog. Love the cooler nights and sleeping without being hot and sticky. Love the smells of autumn and absolutely love the run up to Christmas. Not as excited by it all this year as I feel I’ve been cheated out a summer! Apart from June, it’s been awful weather where I live and I haven’t been away anywhere for any sun.

i haaaate Jan- March with a passion. I’m bored of the cold and dark by then especially as the magic of Christmas has gone and my house isn’t as cosy without the tree. I just have to aim for daffodils and spring for those months and get through them.

Winterlove · 23/08/2023 13:14

As my username suggests I love this time of year. We’ve not had much of a summer where I am but I’m still looking forward to autumn and winter.

I always make fewer plans this time of year and it means being able to have cosy days at home or get out nice walks on the crisp and cold days depending on the weather.

I enjoy the food - soup, roasts, stews. I love red wine much more in the colder weather compared to prosecco or gin.

My favourite clothes are leggings, oversized jumpers and boots so I’ll be able to look out those clothes soon.

I love going out for dog walks and breakfasts, watching films and cooking at home, days with the fire on with a nice clean house. I love sitting doing a jigsaw or doing my hobbies at the kitchen table. I also love spending time planning for Christmas and enjoying the decor. We’re also very lucky to have a hot tub and I love waking up really early on crisp mornings and having tea or coffee and enjoying the sun rising when it’s really quiet.

Many people are saying it’s all clichés but a lot of people genuinely do enjoy this time of year for the reasons they’ve given. I really enjoy the heat and the summer and warm weather but I just love the cosy feel of autumn.

RampantIvy · 23/08/2023 13:38

I wish people wouldn't eulogise about crisp days because they are as rare as hen's teeth.

If autumn and winter were as clear and crisp as everyone makes out I wouldn't hate them.

Us autumn and winter haters hate these seasons because they are usually cold, damp, gloomy and miserable.

I hate having to get togged up in several layers to leave the house. I hate feeling constrained in several layers. I don't want to snuggle under a blanket as I want to feel warm enough not to need one.

I prefer to wear just a dress and sandals, which are my go to clothes for summer, much more than bundling up.

Also, one of my favourite hobbies is gardening. I just live a relaxed potter on a warm summer evening.

TerrorOwls · 23/08/2023 14:09

I think the love for autumn and winter is partly because we feel so fortunate to have shelter that's warm, comfortable and pleasant and can revel in it.
I know I'm always grateful to come in from that cold to a warm house, and be able to have a hot drink with little effort and pretty much straightaway, then be able to put some food on that we can eat hot later.

SirChenjins · 23/08/2023 17:58

Absolutely agree @RampantIvy living in darkness for months on end, scraping ice of the car to get to work and praying that the gritters have been out, having to layer me and the dog up to walk in the rain and mud, sitting up electric throws and blankets, having to have the central heating on and the endless layers of clothes - it’s suffocating and beyond depressing. I’d much rather read or do my hobbies in the daylight when I feel I can live my live and breathe.

Delatron · 24/08/2023 14:31

I’d need to have a half decent summer just to get through Autumn/winter without horrific SAD. But that didn’t happen this year.

As the above poster said maybe if we had those lovely crisp days (or moved somewhere like New England) then it would be more palatable. But no not looking forward to dark evenings and dreary cold days. Heating bills back to ridiculous levels.

I’ve barely had the covers off my garden furniture this year or been able to enjoy sitting in my garden.

What a terrible summer. I didn’t feel quite so bad last year after all the heat and sunshine we had.

FrillyGoatFluff · 24/08/2023 14:35

No more chub rub shorts!

I wondered how long it would be before the blankets and hot chocolate appeared. Genuinely don’t get the MN love for a sugar laden hot milk drink (bleurgh)and lying about on the sofa for hours on end under a blanket (yawn) under artificial light or in the semi darkness.

I would only lie (festering) under a blanket if I was ill. I just don’t understand why people enjoy this - for 6 months? Lying all cosy under their blankets, month after month. So boring (and quite lazy).

Hibernatalie · 24/08/2023 14:53

I feel like this nice thread has been derailed by people who hate autumn Grin
If we all say we hate it too will you leave us alone to carry on talking about why we like it?

Or people who a) don't get the kind of autumn that autumn lovers seem to get. We get very few bright autumn days, the reality being grey and damp, and b) feel cheated out of summer this year.

I love lying under a blanket and get quite sad in summer when I can’t! It’s just so comforting.

I hate bare feet, I hate having my legs uncovered, I just feel exposed! (And I feel that way even if no one is around). It’s just not nice for me.

Weirdly, I’m less lazy in winter / autumn as I can go for walks without getting all sweaty and hot.

I do think people are either wired to like cold or warm, and I’m definitely a cold person.

As the summer comes to an end, what excites you about autumn ?

Absolutely nothing. It leads into winter which I dislike too.

I thought my fairly recent ancestors must have travelled north, that my true homeland was a warmer more southerly country as I dislike autumn and winter so much.

Not so- having done an Ancestry test I found out they were from much further north in Scotland, Ireland and Scandinavia 😀

shivbo2014 · 24/08/2023 15:40

I love autumn, although I'm not quite as excited as usual as I also love Summer and don't really feel we've had one at all this year! I love the grey rainy days in autumn when we're all home on a Sunday afternoon, making a roast candles on, lovely, and cosy! I get a real feeling of gratitude on those days. I also love Halloween, bonfire nights, and Christmas, so there's lots to look forward to! I try and embrace every season and genuinely feel bad for people who dislike almost half the year! My mum gets really down in the winter time and can sink into a real depression, I feel sorry for her as it does feel like winter goes on forever in this country. By February, I'm desperate for the spring again.

mackthepony · 24/08/2023 15:48

Yeah I love autumn

But then I live just a bit further up the road from New England and I cannot get enough of all the Fall goodness! Apples! Pumpkins! Maple! Cosiness!

We have had a great summer though

This. Autumn and winter are just months of miserable weather and darkness, high utility bills, windscreens to be scraped at 7am, icy pavements and roads and so on and on. I hate living under electric lights or peering through candlelight, I hate layering up just to go about my daily life, I hate commuting in the dark, I hate walking the dog in horizontal rain and sleet and most of all I hate the relentless of it all. How anyone can find that pleasant I don’t know - maybe you just don’t move far from your house? The only good thing about winter is the solstice which means spring is on its way.

I love autumn and winter. I love the dark nights and that lovely old England smell that is always in the air. The countdown to xmas is exciting. From a purely superficial pov, I also like wearing long sleeved clothing and boots. I have fat arms and am very small in stature so I always look better in winter. Sleeveless summer dresses/tops and flip flops do me no favours!

RampantIvy · 24/08/2023 16:21

How many people who love Halloween, bonfire night and Christmas have young children?

DD is 23 and lives 100 miles away, so Halloween and bonfire night are non events, and there is no build up to Christmas like you get when your DC are at primary school. Christmas I can take or leave anyway as we have a small family so it is always just the three of us for Christmas.

KickingEAP · 24/08/2023 16:21

Magic mushrooms 🤣

TheBrightestStarInTheSky · 24/08/2023 16:26

I love all the seasons, and make the most of them.
I love most of all that it's a lot quieter when l go out walking, as the fair weathered folk are all indoors.

Tron80 · 24/08/2023 16:30

@RampantIvy My DS is 23 and lives 80 miles away. Always comes home for bonfire night in our village! He is also coming home next weekend as we are making this yr's xmas cake. He is unsure if he will he here this xmas as, may be at his Dad's. I have 17 yr old too and it could be that it will be only us two again this xmas ( it was during Covid) but I always go all out and mark the seasons, make these milestones in the year fun . I think it is about finding pleasure in all the small things. You have 3 of you, that's a crowd, that's a celebration in my book!
