As the summer comes to an end, what excites you about autumn?

I am weird but I love this time of year. Things I look forward to are..
• chunky knits
• nice boots
• that feeling when your freezing and you walk into a warm building
• buying nice candles
• settling down with the kids on a sat night to watch a movie with treats ( normally they play out till Bath/bed time in summer)

I'm sure there's more.

What's yours ?

I usually work travel out somehow!

I work in cardiology and you're correct about cold affecting people but this summer during the heatwave the emergency cardiac admissions were crazy busy. One of my consultants even commented that this summer was like a winter level of business.

Don't think extreme weather whatever it is helps the medically vulnerable.

I've somehow ended up living in the sunniest county in the UK. We should swap homes - you come south and I'll go north!

SirChenjins · 03/09/2022 12:13

That’s great you can work out travel somehow - it doesn’t sound like it’s a major issue for you or that winter affects the buses too much.

I’ve been with the NHS for 30 years and winter is always the one that causes more issues for services across our H&SCP - goodness knows what it will be like this year.

We are planning to move south when we retire but if you want cool wet summers and freezing cold, damp winters with about 5/6 good hours of daylight for months on end then do come north!

Vintagevixen · 03/09/2022 12:35

Buses do stop working here if too much ice on the road - the town is properly hilly and literally on a series of cliffs. I actually had lots of transport problems over the summer as I sometimes supplement my income by doing bank in London and the heat made train travel very disrupted.

Sounds perfect for me weather wise. If my entire family weren't south I would seriously consider it. Always fancied Scotland too - love Glasgow and the weather there.

Once a Goth always a Goth I guess. My perfect holiday is a tour around Whitby Abby in the drizzle and fog thinking I'm in Bram Stokers Dracula!

whoruntheworldgirls · 03/09/2022 13:02

Love love summer, but i am looking forward to wearing my snuggly dressing gown, having candles lit, Halloween, bonfire night.
Just hope it's not a damp grey autumn....

goldfinchonthelawn · 03/09/2022 13:23

I love:
the misty mornings
Fruit from the garden - blackberries and apples
The smell of bonfires
Lighting our wood fire
Lighting candles
Wearing boots and cashmere jumpers
Autumn food - I've made pear, apple and blackberry compote today with vanilla and cinnamon - all the fruit from our garden or a neighbour's.
I love making soup too.
Dahlias - my favourite flowers. They and chrysanths are out right now with their deep, rich colours

SirChenjins · 01/09/2022 20:42

Why do you feel for us? I love spring and summer - the light, the lazy days, the warmth of the sun on my skin, the late night walks with the dog playing in the river, the life bursting out in the garden, the wildlife in the woods at the back of us, lightweight clothing, the smell of drying clothes on the line, the longs days when you can be out until late. There’s so much more to enjoy from March/April onwards - autumn and winter are endured, and no amount of sitting under a blanket under electric lights watching the sleet batter down with a hot choc makes up for these months. We’re far more likely to have damp, miserable days than crisp sunny ones here.

I love all those things you listed too @SirChenjins . I think I just love the turning of the seasons.

Cinnamon rolls
Bakewell tart
Pumpkin pie
Baking in general
Pumpkin spiced latte
Oodie (fake)
Blankets
Slipper socks
Historical fiction
Slow cooker meals
TV dramas
Candles
Log burner
Sloe gin
Red wine
Brushed cotton bed linen
The smell when you turn the heating on for the first time
Walks in woodland
Boots
Knitwear
The fact my kids sleep better and later
No flies and maggots

SirChenjins · 03/09/2022 13:54

And that’s ok! @goldfinchonthelawn 😊 - as I said, I think a lot of it depends on where you live, what you have to do in winter in terms of getting to and from work, what your caring responsibilities are, what transport options you have, your access to shops, your income, your housing, temperatures and levels of dampness and so on. Living in the SEE in autumn and winter is a completely different experience to living in the north of the UK when you factor in these issues.

thespanishlady77 · 03/09/2022 14:35

Scented candles and fairy lights

Delatron · 03/09/2022 14:47

A lot of the things listed we can have in summer too.

I often drink red wine in summer. I keep some fairy lights up. I’ve had some lovely walks in the wood this summer.

These lists for me, don’t make up for dark mornings and evenings.. I struggle to get up in the dark - it feels like the middle of the night..

I have no energy.

Loveatortie · 03/09/2022 14:51

I love every season

Lorrymum · 03/09/2022 14:56

Not being woken at 6 every morning while neighbour creeps around watering her garden!
My birthday
Halloween
crisp, cool mornings

mydogisthebest · 03/09/2022 09:03

Nothing. I am already hating the fact that it is getting dark earlier and earlier. I just find it so depressing.

I also hate wearing socks, hate wearing jumpers. I don't like long sleeved clothes at all really.

Ditto. Evenings are noticeably darker now.

TeaAddict235 · 04/09/2022 20:49

Love autumn, hate Halloween with a passion. Hate winter though.

LadyHelenaJustina · 04/09/2022 23:37

I love the seasons; that sense of the world moving. It is going to be a difficult winter for so many, but my small consolations are:
-darker mornings which mean I don't wake up stupidly early.
-less heat during the day so I get more done.
-I finally get back the hour that was stolen from me in the spring
-leggings. I like the feeling of constriction.

AlisonDonut · 05/09/2022 06:54

We've stupidly come on holiday by mistake.

2 days in Bordeaux.

It was insanely hot yesterday, I'm bitten to buggery, and haven't slept for either night. I love the city but we have to come back when it is cooler. This is madness.

At least in our house 2 hours away, we have thick walls so it is cooler indoors than out. The hotel is like a furnace.

Bring on autumn you beautiful beast.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 05/09/2022 08:33

While idly googling a soup recipe the other day, I came across several Delia ones -thick main meal type - that I can’t wait to try. As a bonus they’ll mostly be relatively cheap to make.

Redcase · 22/08/2023 19:29

Absolutely loved this thread last year. Is it too early to start talking about autumn yet? I follow autumn accounts on Instagram 😂and they are full ofAmerican homes already decorated for their Fall

AppletreesAndHoneybeesAndSnowWhiteTurtleDoves · 22/08/2023 19:36

We have another month to go, but...

Leaves. I love the autumn leaves.

Frosty crisp mornings.

Bonfire night!

The smell of bonfires and wood smoke

Dew on spiders webs making them look pretty

Watching and hearing geese migrating

Roasted chestnuts

Wearing a new coat or jacket, new boots.

Wearing funky scarves without sweating.

SirChenjins · 22/08/2023 19:45

Damp weather with the odd dry day
High central heating bills
Endless darkness, like living underground
Muddy dog walks
Stodgy food
Layers of clothes

sanityisamyth · 22/08/2023 20:11

My point from last year still stands. There is absolutely nothing to look forward to about autumn and feel like I have y had a summer. Will really struggle this autumn and winter because of it.

Highdaysandholidays1 · 22/08/2023 20:14

I'm afraid I'm in the nothing camp as well.

Making lists of what's great about something is what you have to do if it's not great.

magicalkitty · 22/08/2023 20:15

I love Halloween build up - the mystery around it and the general spooky season. But actually Halloween day itself is a bit 'meh'.

I like bonfire night and the period before it gets too cold. I like the autumn telly. I like autumn colours in nature and autumn fashion.

thirdistheonewiththehairychest · 22/08/2023 20:18

I'm not even the slightest bit excited about autumn this year considering I've been wearing my hoodie all summer 😠

Ifyouknewmeyouwoudlikeme · 22/08/2023 20:33

TeaAddict235 · 04/09/2022 20:49

Love autumn, hate Halloween with a passion. Hate winter though.

I hate Halloween too - it's a lot of fuss for one day, it's straight after half-term and just when the clocks have gone back so we're not used to the early dark evenings. Once my 2 are older I'm going to be lights off and curtains closed and ignore the whole farce!

I also hate winter but I do find an advantage of getting older is it goes by quicker than it used too.
