Weirdest place you've ever been?

Not necessarily woo, just weird.

We were looking at places to rent and the landlord showed us round a house which was becoming available. He was as uncomfortable as us when he saw that not only were the windows blacked out but the entire house from the ceiling down including the floors was covered in thick black plastic and the main bedroom had a lock added and we couldn't get in.

We left pretty quickly and I'm not really sure if the landlord looked into that any further!

Glasgow Central Station always makes me feel a bit weird but I'm not sure why.

Palermo. Weird doesn’t even cover it. The Catacombes of dead people was it’s only redeeming feature. Our family saying when we go anywhere now is “at least it won’t be as bad as Palermo”.

I was just about to say Nuneaton, a few of us were there for work and strolled into the town centre for dinner. It was menacingly vacant, with a few people hanging about in doorways, really weird vibe. We drove to a country pub instead.

I've been to Nuneaton a couple of times and it feels soulless.

Milton Keynes is somewhere else that feels soulless, but I definitely got the shudders driving through it at night.

Wieliczka Salt Mine in Krakow - beautiful but weird vibes

Lynton and Lynmouth in Devon - particularly the Valley of the Rocks - something just felt off about the place

Also had weird vibes at Glasgow Central !

I went to Wieliczka about 15 years ago and it was lovely. I seem to recall there being plenty of gnomes. 😁I came across lots of sweaty tourists but no weird vibes unfortunately.

I was trying to think of a weird place but I'm not sure I've been to proper weird ones. Birmingham was pretty unsettling but I wouldn't class it as having a particularly weird vibe.

Valley of the Rocks

I believe it actually called Valley of Rocks. One does not insert 'the'. This is similar to other places like Moreton-in-Marsh.

If you are going to these types of places, you really do need to work on your language and grammar. Or one looks a bit of a fuckwit.

Combe Martin
Newcastle, particularly the area around the castle.
Normandy
The place in Northern France where Hitler stored his V2 rocket. It was built by "prisoners of war" - it's by far the worst place I've ever been.

beachcomber70 · 01/09/2022 20:22

Glastonbury: strange atmosphere, underlying menace
Combe Martin: empty, gloomy, airless
Tintern Abbey: weird, chilling
Isle of Wight: oppressive, bad atmosphere all over. Couldn't stand the place

But that is fake. It quite clear from Ordnance Survey that the place is Valley of Rocks.

Anyone can pull a fake website up. Donald Trump does it all the time.

Chernobyl in Ukraine, the site of the nuclear plant disaster in [ ], is apparently very haunting and beautiful. It is frozen in time and lush greenery has taken over.

Apparently tourists could take tours to the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. Doubt if that is still going on, what with the Russian invasion and all Sad.

The entirety of Lincolnshire.

The flatness freaks me out (although Skeggy is OK for a bit of seaside fun).

Qik · 01/09/2022 20:35

Devon Live is, like most online news channels, basically an advertising channel that is run by AI and sucks all other news stories in. Basically a digital cut-and-paste job. Did you not know this? Two wrongs do not make a right. Nor do three, four, five etc.

Yours sincerely

@ThreeRingCircus I had the same reaction to those flat areas although I perceived at a sort of low level depression or like the oxygen had been partially sucked away.
We stayed in some log cabin thing in a wood for a few days and it felt surreal and unpleasant.

I don't hate all flat stuff invariably though, I like the Vendée a lot. So I'm not sure what it is.

I don't know the name of it but it was an abandoned mining village in Gwynedd. We went there during a crap (weather and illness) family holiday in 1978, on the basis of it being a ghost town. All I remember is the relentless rain and a No Entry sign on a gate. Hardly worth it but I was only seven years old so perhaps I didn't really get it.

Glastonbury is odd. Thought everyone would be fluffy and happy as it's a spiritual place, but the place seemed very tense. Dartmoor - Wistman's wood = found a miniature sculpture hanging from trees with stick figures clothed in rags. Also the parts of the moor that look like fresh grass, then you step on them and go up to your waist in stinky bog water.

Ah! The Grimpen Mire Grin

Cor with messages by Qik and NewBootsAndRanty it's true that Mumsnet seems to be have snarky arguments and sneeriness about not much at all these days. I blame the pandemic. I mean it's obviously super important to show how one is better bred and educated on these things Confused

gnilliwdog · 01/09/2022 21:15

@tobee I swear I could hear the goblins cackling as I put my foot down, and then sank into the ground. So relieved when my foot touched the bottom! Also, I think I washed my clothes 3 times to get the smell out.

Thought you meant 1986 was the weirdest place you've ever been 😂. Can't have been weirder than 2020 surely!

WarmSausageTea · 01/09/2022 21:26

Chernobyl and Pripyat are the strangest, saddest places I’ve been. The fairground was unsettling enough, then the carousel started slowly moving and creaking, despite there being almost no breeze at all. That said, I loved it (if that’s the right word for somewhere so steeped in tragedy) and hope that opening the area up for tourism has brought some benefit to locals.

Belgrade had a very odd feeling, a strong undercurrent of belligerence is the only way I can describe it. The vibe was strange and unsettling, but I got a chuckle from a womenswear shop named LTB.

Whitby museum, old and fusty with mummified shrunken human heads.

There’s a theme park in Devon somewhere. I can’t remember what it’s called but the person who started it was a collector of Victorian clockwork machines. There are loads of creepy clockwork machines for children around the place. Really interesting but a bit spooky at the same time 😊

Is it Watermouth Castle? Every single thing about that place is weird as fuck.

If only time were a place we could travel back to ...

MumbleCrumbs · 01/09/2022 21:48

Isn't it funny how people get such different vibes from places. I absolutely adore Tenby and can't understand why anyone would think it gives off a weird vibe, is it the narrow streets or the people?

However, and I know I'll probably get heat for this, I found York to be a really odd place. Something about the atmosphere is just sad. I went for the first time this Summer and was really looking forward to it but didn't enjoy it at all. Sad, strange city.
