How do you feel when you wake up

When I wake up I always feel sick, lightheaded and a bit nauseous. It always goes when I've been moving around for a bit but I'm beginning to wonder if it's an issue or if it's a common way to feel when you wake up.

I've got two young kids so I've always put it down to being tired

How do you feel when you wake up?

I only recently realised jaw clenching was the cause of most of my morning headaches too

I got a night time mouth guard from the dentist recently which was expensive but has changed my life and stopped my grinding/ clenching headaches. Recommend looking into it if you haven't already.

Tired, and a bit stiff. Sometimes I feel a bit ill but not sick. I am probably peri meno which means sleep isn't always good but I've always had problems with feeling tired. The best I've felt was when I wasn't working and didn't have DC. I had plenty of time to do things, excercised, ate well and slept better. Oh and the first time I had steroids for IBD. That was amazing, but alas never recreated in real life!

Until I have a shower and a cuppa, I feel like shit. I find keeping water by my bed and drinking it as soon as I wake up helps me feel less groggy.

On the days I do yoga in the morning (wish I could say I do it every day, but I’m not that virtuous!) I feel miles better. But even a few minutes stretching while still in bed helps.

I almost always feel a bit low and stressed on waking, too. Cortisol, the stress hormone, is at its peak in the mornings, so it’s pretty common to feel like this. Accepting the fact has helped a lot. I go through a series of actions on autopilot to make myself feel better - shower, tea, breakfast, meditation, setting intentions for the day etc. By the time I leave for work I feel right as rain. So it really is just a case of riding out the crappy first part of the morning for me,

Same! I absolutely love mornings. I do however find it more difficult in the run up to my period.

Thanks I definitely need to do this as the headaches can be debilitating sometimes.

Anyone else get tingling in their fingers depending which side they have been sleeping on? Have had it for 2-3yeaes and it is relieved instantly when I straighten my arm out!!

I used to feel like this, tired and nauseous. Since I gave up tea/coffee, I only drink water. I feel good when I wake up now.

I feel fine when I wake up. No sickness, dizziness, aches, pains etc. I'm nearly 40.

It's a relief that there are so many of us like this. I'm vile in the mornings, I feel sick and dizzy and tired (even after 8 hours sleep), and I just don't want any human contact for at least an hour.

I feel terrible for about half an hour when I wake up, groggy and with a feeling of doom, sometimes I'm really hungry and have to eat straight away and sometimes I feel sick and can't eat or even have a drink, I do drink about a litre of water during the night though, I wake up multiple times during the night thirsty, always worse around my period.
It's not just mornings either because I felt the same way when I worked nights and got up in the evening.
If I have a nap or go back to sleep though I usually wake feeling worse, like a trembly feeling all over, wooly headed and craving sugar, struggle with coordination for about an hour - but I think that's sleep inertia.
Years of shifts and especially nights have fucked my sleep patterns I think.

@Maverickess drinking a litre of water overnight is really not normal. Have you mentioned this to your GP?

Always get up felling like I need another hour's sleep but usually ok 15 minutes later. Done so many sports injuries when I was younger my back, knees or ankles can be quite stiff

Funnily enough I feel the same whether I have had 4 or 5 pints in the pub the previous evening or just watched Netflix. Taste in my mouth is probably worse with the former.

Depends what time it is - I usually wake a few times in the night. If it's the first waking and I've slept for more than three hours, I'm pleased. I usually need a wee. Once it gets to 6 am I'm happy to get up, and I like early mornings; I go down and have a peaceful breakfast on my own.

I'm diabetic and those were my 3 main symptoms before I was diagnosed. I'm still sick on a morning sometimes and it's always when my blood sugars have gone too high overnight
I've been tested so many times for diabetes, I even once asked the dr if I'm borderline or are we sure the tests are correct. I'm definitely not diabetic.

If you have low blood pressure they will tell you it's fine or "very good!" as they are concerned about too high, not too low. But borderline low blood pressure can make you feel crap
I've always had low blood pressure, I took it at home yesterday cos we got a new monitor, and it was 97/53 which is low but at the surgery its usually 104/90 or thereabouts and so the dr is never worried.
I'm wondering now if this is my issue with waking up feeling terrible.

I haven't needed a GP for a while but I have mentioned it in the past alongside other symptoms which point to a thyroid problem but my blood tests were normal so no action there, except get more exercise, lose some weight (ongoing battle!) and cut out alcohol (which I drink very rarely anyway) I don't always drink enough during the day though so I've put it down to that.

I wake up instantly. 100 miles an hour. Just get up and start whatever time it is, usually 6.45-7.00am. I'm at my bouncy best first thing.

Afternoons are hardest, I crash and burn mid afternoon. But by then I've done 8 full hours.

I rest with my feet up for a few hours then I'm productive again until midnight. I can get a good 14 hours productivity out of my days this way.

I'm in my 50's. Embracing my natural energy cycle has been my answer. Fighting it gets me nowhere. If I fight it I stop being productive mid afternoon but productivity doesn't kick back in again that day.

Pretty good usually. Sometimes even excited to start the day! But I love my job, have two gorgeous kitties to go check and snuggle first thing, and I relish getting a coffee first thing and back to bed to read the paper for an hour before the kids start moving.

Sometimes have a sore neck and often a sore lower back. I have no problem getting up other than physically having to warm my joints up. Like mentally and brain-wise I’m ok. I have 3 kids inc 5 month old and am overweight so no idea what I’m doing right! I do eat healthy and exercise enough though. And I drink a LOT (water not alcohol!!)

Bit tired - have a 5.30am alarm- but have no choice but to get straight up. The thought of a a hot strong coffee propels me downstairs and then I quite enjoy my walk to work / job. Physically I always feel fine, no aches, but I’ve practiced yoga daily for almost 20 years which helps a lot.

I’ve always been an early bird though.

I’m currently 18 weeks pregnant and the tiredness creeps in some mornings.

I rarely have a solid nights sleep and wake up several times throughout the early hours but I’ve just got used to it. I still manage about 7 hours altogether. Dh is up early for work, so I wake quite early but once he’s left, dc likes to cuddle up with me for a good hour where we just snooze. I have started to have a little nap with toddler dc too, so that helps!

I have ADHD which can cause issues with waking up and it's sometimes correlated with Delayed Sleep Phase Disorder, which I haven't been tested for but wonder if I have. As a teenager, if I wasn't woken I would sleep until the afternoon.

Another DSPD sufferer here (diagnosed by a sleep clinic about 20 years ago). Commiserations if you do have it, it's no fun is it. I actually didn't know about the ADHD link but it's interesting to read that, as I strongly suspect I have it (albeit mine seems more like inattentive ADD than ADHD).

Weekday mornings are usually a nightmare as my body clock is firmly convinced it's supposed to be sleeping from about 5-6 a.m. till lunchtime, so not exactly in step with conventional business hours. It also appears to be worsening with age which is a real treat.😩

I used to have a fairly solid 4am to noon sleep cycle, but years of fighting it broke that. Now my sleep is pretty much random-length chunks at random times 😖 It's often hard for people to understand how disruptive and disabling a non-standard sleep pattern can be.
