What cheap items have you bought for the home that have helped get rid of mild daily annoyances?

I’m slowly making a list of things that annoy me in the house, and thinking about what to do/buy to fix the issue. I’m talking cheap things, like a pack of new drawer knobs as some of ours are broken.

What thing solved an issue that had been annoying you for ages?

We bought a stainless steel coffee press thing after breaking the 3rd glass one. I didn’t even know they existed before looking for alternatives!

I’m in the middle of a ‘not-quite-spring’-cleaning so finding lots of little things that need fixing!

Command hooks and wire baskets. I've got hooks in the side of a kitchen cupboard that I hooked a magazine rack to and keep all the floaty bits of paper and a couple of pens (eg shopping lists, meal planner). Before, they would have been left loose on the island.

I've also got a couple on the side of my dressing table, with a wire basket hooked on that I keep hairdryer and straighteners in. Saves faffing about with them in a drawer.

A Joseph rice cooker. I was fed up with pans of rice boiling over making a mess of the cooker. It's not really quicker but goes in the microwave and can be cooked then left while I am finishing off other things. You can rinse the rice in the basket and all cooking water is absorbed/evaporated so no messy draining either.

Rack to go inside kitchen cupboard for chopping boards and backing sheets. Can take one out without all the others falling over.
hook for the dustpan and brush set to hang inside the under the sink cupboard door. So easy to find now instead of rummaging about.
small dish for the backdoor/side gate/shed keys.
hobby craft trolleys for kids arts and crafts
plastic boxes for everything- spices/vitamins/adults medicine/kids medicine/bin bags (inc recycling bags and food caddy bags)/ bathroom cleaning etc.

A second phone charger for beside my bed
(I know, I know) it doesn't hold hardly any charge these days

This. I use my phone as an alarm and a charger upstairs has been a godsend!

ThreeRingCircus · 28/08/2022 10:00

A USB stick candle lighter......easy to recharge but a charge lasts for ages anyway. Also brilliant for when we go camping as there's no flame for the wind to blow out. We bought ours from Amazon.

Also not an item but just a tip.....if you have a pedal bin just put the whole roll of bin liners in the bottom all still connected together then pull the top one up and line the bin as normal. Then when that's full you just pull it out and the next liner comes with it attached to the bottom and ready to use. This was a gamechanger for me as I'd always empty the bathroom bins then forget to go downstairs and have to fetch another bin liner.

pipwoes · 28/08/2022 10:02

Following here as I keep seeing more and more good ideas
Mine is my teabag saucer - again as the walk to bin with steaming tea bag often ended in dropping it

HRTQueen · 28/08/2022 10:10

Boiled egg timer. I got mine from the £ shop about three years ago needs replacing now as it’s discoloured with limescale

mat for litter tray so when the cat jumps out the little stuck to his paws will mostly be left on the mat

wooden toast tongs

food clips from Amazon they are metal and much better than plastic ones

Koala2 · 28/08/2022 10:11

A drying rack for water bottles: OXO Good Grips Aluminium Frame Bottle Drying Rack
Very tidy and it works!

ShirleyJackson · 28/08/2022 10:19

@Koala2 that’s exactly what I need, and I didn’t know it existed. Ordered! Thank you.

Caminante · 28/08/2022 10:53

I'm looking for a tidy and visually pleasing way to store chargers of types and lengths on a kitchen counter! Was using nothing, now using a dish, but I'm sure there's something better out there 😊

Yes to this. Mine is ancient and not JJ, but it's so good.

ProfYaffle · 28/08/2022 12:02

I've just bought a necklace roll and love it. No more tangled chains or forgotten necklaces that never get worn. Just un-roll, see the whole selection and choose one, roll back up and store in a drawer.

I think I need this in my life .
I do like Basmati Rice and usually do the soak/2xboiling water :rice volume /heat till absorbed and rice cooked but it can go Pete Tong.

Rice is great for us , I can add loads of vegetables etc.
I;m not a fan of the pre-packed rice sachets .

I use an old shoulder bag for pegs.

We seem to need a ton of pegs and peg bags never seem big enough. They all fit in an old shoulder bag and it stays on my shoulder as I peg stuff out.

DH claims it won't sit on his shoulder though so wears it around his neck like a nose bag. Makes me smile every time!

Chopped frozen onions. I am a lazy chef but these are a game changer.

Unicorn2022 · 27/08/2022 14:44

A teabag bin from teabagbin.co.uk - this is the best one I have had.

Tiny little castors which stick underneath the breadbin and other items on the worktop, so I can move them around the worktop and not scratch it - they were so cheap and called Set of 16 Pcs Small Castor Wheels on Amazon

Foldable laundry baskets

Which ones do you have as I need some

I have two of the plastic foldable crates for the chest freezer, one stacks on the other. No more scrambling round for stuff at the bottom. They do get plastic fatigue so need replacing every couple of years

Deathraystare · 28/08/2022 13:54

@maslinpan

Could have done with wooden tongs yesterday! Had to fish my pittas out of the toaster with a fork (I know!)

Unicorn2022 · 28/08/2022 15:31

@Oldraver I've got the Beldray oval collapsible baskets from Amazon, they were about £12. I've got the collapsible bucket too.

That bag hook.. it.looks like magic.
Does it really hold a bag? Even if my.bag is full of total crap if I'm honest very very important stuff I most definitely need.

Yes it does! Even a full bag! So useful.

@EkinWho thanks for the link. The egg cooker in the article sounds good, I’ve been having issues with timings of my soft boiled eggs.

If you take an egg out of the water with a spoon and watch if a small patch dries off immediately your egg is perfectly soft boiled.

lightisnotwhite · 29/08/2022 05:04

My iron plugs into my ironing board. It has a folding arm that you clip the flex onto but it means you don’t need to stretch the iron.
Also it’s easier if you want to stop half way, as you unplug the iron and leave the board plugged in. You can move the board round and still iron easily. DS is left handed so we can both use it without having flex in the way.

FunsizedandFabulous · 29/08/2022 06:00

Some cheap metal freestanding shelves from IKEA.

We live in a 2-bed flat with only one decent cupboard. All our stuff was stacked up on the floor of this cupboard. Used to make me swear when DH or DD would use something and just chuck it back in without a thought. I had to tidy it up daily. So I bought the shelves and some storage boxes and...bliss. Everything is better. Though DH tries to takeover the cupboard with his beer and hobbies still, not realising we all still need access tto the vacuum cleaner and mop.
