What cheap items have you bought for the home that have helped get rid of mild daily annoyances?

I’m slowly making a list of things that annoy me in the house, and thinking about what to do/buy to fix the issue. I’m talking cheap things, like a pack of new drawer knobs as some of ours are broken.

What thing solved an issue that had been annoying you for ages?

We bought a stainless steel coffee press thing after breaking the 3rd glass one. I didn’t even know they existed before looking for alternatives!

I’m in the middle of a ‘not-quite-spring’-cleaning so finding lots of little things that need fixing!

Metal clothes pegs. I'm useless at remembering to bring the pegs in and they always go rusty, brittle and self destruct.

These stainless steel ones can be left out in the rain and don't rust. They're also perfect for using as bag clips in the freezer / pantry. They don't go brittle in the cold like plastic bag clips can.

Pegs

If you like those ones, you'll love these ones Can't live without them - multi use

I have a nice place to keep my pen but now my annoying family keep taking it as they know there’s ‘always a nice pen that works in mummy’s jar’ ffs. Tips welcome…

Keep nice pens in places that the rest of the annoying family won't look - cleaning cupboard, knicker drawer, ironing pile?

If you like iced coffees definitely get a milk whisk, about £6 on amazon and you make as many frappes as you like

ReluctantCourier · 29/08/2022 21:12

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie as a teen with brothers I used to stash penguin bars in a tampon box 🤔

chimichangaz · 29/08/2022 21:24

@ReluctantCourier as a 56 yo mother of a 21 yo DS I keep my chocolate stash in the salad drawer 😳

ReluctantCourier · 29/08/2022 21:33

@chimichangaz label a big box ‘sex toys’ and you can probably keep anything in there for years…

A magnetic whiteboard that sticks on the side of the fridge. If you have used the last of anything, write it on the board. If you haven't written it on the board it's not my problem when it's not there.

When I go shopping, all I need to do is take a photo of the shopping list.

So far I've bought a spray mop and have the magnetic clouds and drawer organisers in my Amazon basket.

Oh my God. That's absolutely genius!

I used to have a pad that stuck to the fridge, but was always falling off, and flapping everywhere cos a magnet had come off.

That's brilliant - especially taking a photo! It's so obvious, but I would never have thought of it. I'm buying one now...

Another tip from me - I have a perpetual year planner. Like an office year planner, but the strips of dates come off and you move them each year. No more flipping the calendar month and realising there's somethig happening on the 1st that I'd forgotten about! Year planner

A Joseph rice cooker. I was fed up with pans of rice boiling over making a mess of the cooker. It's not really quicker but goes in the microwave and can be cooked then left while I am finishing off other things. You can rinse the rice in the basket and all cooking water is absorbed/evaporated so no messy draining either.

I bought one , just tried out out tonight .
Absolutely brilliant Grin
I made 1 cup ( 3 people) of rice , let the microwave do it's biz and resulting rice was non stodgey , not over cooked and no spillage /

DH was Hmm when it arrived but I think he's secretly converted .....

I've just discovered that Joseph Joseph, makers of wonderful soap dishes, cutlery trays and other things you didn't know you needed until you had them, donate to the Tory party. Bugger - somewhere else I can't buy from now.

LaurelGrove · 04/09/2022 11:07

Loving my metal clothes pegs already!
Is the scrubby thing a Scrub Daddy? I love mine - useful and cheerful.

Oh, shit, really? This is really making buying quite difficult.

Does anyone have any recommendations stations for making existing kitchen units more accessible for someone who can't bend down very well? Slide out thingies maybe.
