What cheap items have you bought for the home that have helped get rid of mild daily annoyances?

I’m slowly making a list of things that annoy me in the house, and thinking about what to do/buy to fix the issue. I’m talking cheap things, like a pack of new drawer knobs as some of ours are broken.

What thing solved an issue that had been annoying you for ages?

We bought a stainless steel coffee press thing after breaking the 3rd glass one. I didn’t even know they existed before looking for alternatives!

I’m in the middle of a ‘not-quite-spring’-cleaning so finding lots of little things that need fixing!

Wooden toaster tongs are brilliant

GenialHarryGr0ut · 27/08/2022 21:27

Hooks for keys
Holder things for baking trays and chopping boards so they slot in and stand upright in my kitchen cupboards - made such a difference - previously they were in a precarious heap and sliding one out was like a game of jenga

coodawoodashooda · 27/08/2022 21:27

Decent clothes pegs.

EmptshelvesUK · 27/08/2022 21:29

Pop up laundry bins, one for whites and lights, one for colours, one for my clothing I buy from a specific store which I want to wash with care.

i just grab the appropriate bin and load the washing machine asap and don’t miss items which would have otherwise got hidden in another piece of clothing.

lakeland assorted size bag clips.

Airtight containers for breakfast cereal, stops them going stale quickly and easier to pour neatly into a bowl

I just roll the bag down and stick a peg on it

I have cable holders (self adhesive) on the side of the bedside locker. I can plug all my chargers into one 4 space USB plug, and thread the wires through the holders. No tangles and colour coded.

I got a new wardrobe and bought a cheap old double hanging rail from Argos to use while it was being built. Fun self assembly lol! It is brilliant. I now use it to immediately shake and hang up nearly dry or damp washing on hangers. More or less flush against the wall so doesn't take up space like an airer would. Spare room success!

And lastly (there are so many....) a corkboard notice board with pins. Inside the cupboard door. I now have instant access to receipts, appointments and all the bits of paper that you think you "might" need so are reluctant to bin immediately. I am very pleased with that. The fridge used to be a mess of paper behind the magnets, and the magnets fell off regularly. No more.

For laundry , zip up padded bags

SocksBag for each person much easier to match up and hang
Bras (CBA handwashing)
Anything that might get stretched

My machine can turn laundry the right way round -I always turn everything Inside Out except socks so it's a bit weird when I find a TShirt has worked it's way right side . What the Jeff is going on in there ?

We have a little ledge/hook by the front door and hang all our keys up as we come in the door. Now I don’t need to scramble round for keys in the morning as it’s helped set the habit of putting the keys where they belong.

Be careful nit to hang car remotes by the door, tgry can be scanned... but we did the same in out understairs cupboard :)

I bought from Amazon a pack of 2 big silicone disk thingies.
They go in the bath over the plug hole.

The reason I got them is because the bath plug is a modern plug made of metal with a small rubber ring around it and every time I put it in the bath, had my bath and pulled it... The connecter piece bent and came off meaning I had to spend longer fiddling with a wedged in plug than I spent washing my arse.

The silicone disk thingies have been revolutionary. Soon as I'm done in the bath, slide it to the side, water drains. I leave the plug on the side and make it watch as I choose to not use it.. little bastard. 😜

Have you got a link for these? I could definitely do with one.

Manuals are kept in colour coded display folders.

Drawers organiserz, IKEA..
DC have small box for pants, another for socks etc.
No searching in a mountain for them. Same in bathroom, all DH shaving in a box in bathroom drawers and so on.

Same with my bedside drawers.

Rather than a huge nush of crap I have a little box for my moisturizers and another for pain relief etc.

Hook's hooks and more hooks.

Wow..that's my new revolution. I've got one on my bedroom door for necklaces.
I'm getting loads for the area under the stairs and can't wait until DH puts one up for my coat, scarf and bag in winter!

RayneDance · 27/08/2022 22:36

70s...

Do you mean you sort sock's before they go in and then you wash them?

Nelia5 · 27/08/2022 22:39

Re-fillable, re-usable pod for my Dolce Gusto coffee machine. Just fill it with a decent ground coffee of my choice. Better coffee, cheaper than buying a box of the coffee pods. The coffee machine was a gift so can’t get rid of it and I quite like it.

goldfinchonthelawn · 27/08/2022 22:40

A £10 stainless steel milk frother. (And I also bought a stainless steel cafetiere after getting through so many glass ones.) Perfect frothy coffee every morning for a few pence. Earned its keep in a week.

Oh yes Grin
DH , DS and I all wear black work socks (DH plain, DS and I have patterns or colour logo thingies )

DD socks white

Wet black socks in a heap give me the vapours , so if we each have our own bag (and the socks are the right way out ) it is much easier for me .

And I have a 10kg machine so it stops random socks ending up inside other clothes .

Zen Washing (or just over thinking Grin )

Defo the spray mop with microfiber pads, throw in some Method floor cleaner and you've got yourself a fresh smelling house and clean floor in no time

Today I saw a clip on small basket that you clip to the side of your counter tops to scrape in all food cuttings while you're cooking to keep the counter clean. T'was in the range.

YenneferOfVengabus · 27/08/2022 23:04

Two identical bins for general waste and recycling - much better than the tub near the back door that we used to have!
Wireless phone charger for in the kitchen - no need to run upstairs to get my charger and anyone can use it, as long as their phone can be charged wirele

drunktrifle · 27/08/2022 23:04

@AlternativelyWired
I bought these ones because I wanted the green, but there's loads of others available.

£1 quickachips tray for quicker and crisper oven chips
www.poundland.co.uk/101381-quickachips-cooking-mesh-30-x-30cm/
A small, non-stick, single fried egg pan - cooks eggs quickly, perfectly, needs a teeny bit of oil.
One of these amazing hooks, to hang my handbag from the table at bars, restaurants, cafés etc. I think this is my favourite one! amzn.eu/gPv8yW0
