What cheap items have you bought for the home that have helped get rid of mild daily annoyances?

I’m slowly making a list of things that annoy me in the house, and thinking about what to do/buy to fix the issue. I’m talking cheap things, like a pack of new drawer knobs as some of ours are broken.

What thing solved an issue that had been annoying you for ages?

We bought a stainless steel coffee press thing after breaking the 3rd glass one. I didn’t even know they existed before looking for alternatives!

I’m in the middle of a ‘not-quite-spring’-cleaning so finding lots of little things that need fixing!

£1 quickachips tray for quicker and crisper oven chips
www.poundland.co.uk/101381-quickachips-cooking-mesh-30-x-30cm/
A small, non-stick, single fried egg pan - cooks eggs quickly, perfectly, needs a teeny bit of oil.
One of these amazing hooks, to hang my handbag from the table at bars, restaurants, cafés etc. I think this is my favourite one! amzn.eu/gPv8yW0

That bag hook.. it.looks like magic.
Does it really hold a bag? Even if my.bag is full of total crap if I'm honest very very important stuff I most definitely need.

Magnetic spice jars that stick to the fridge. So much easier to see what is what and I use them way more than I used to when I had to rummage in a cupboard.

TheBatwoman · 27/08/2022 23:36

Buggy clips and the magnetic cupboard locks have made life with our twins so much easier. Oh and new, solid doorstops to replace the sodding spring ones they kept trying to flick/break/eat every time my OH was ‘watching them!

A wash basket with collapsible legs. With the legs concealed, it sits in my utility room. Then I add wet clothes, bring it to the line, unleash the legs and I don’t have to stoop.

A also have collapsible crates that I keep in the car. Really handy for groceries or just generally lugging stuff.

Lastly, years ago I bought a small handy-trolley in IKEA for about £10. It’s so handy and I’ve used it loads over the years. Again, it folds so easy to store (mine is on a hook in the garage).

Bins in a drawer in our Ikea kitchen units - one for rubbish and one for recycling. Smaller one that we use for compostable waste and a tiny one that stores bin liners. We have the same in the scullery - cat food, dog food, potatoes and glass for recycling (not collected here). Tiny one for rags.

This bath plug 🛀🏼

Umbra 023464-918 Flex Drain... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01I5D0F76?ref=ppxpoppmobappshare

We've got a central plug hole in the bath which has a pop plug on it. Ddog was very good at popping it up when having a bath. Great hair catcher too!

The original pop up plug sits on the side of the bath now 😂 watching!

mrsmacmc · 28/08/2022 00:15

Oh and a mummy clip too. Originally designed for use on buggies / prams but good for hanging the socktapus on the curtain rail at the back door!

Gruffling · 28/08/2022 00:32

A box of 50 biros. Put some in various places around the house, one in car etc.

It took us ages to solve this simple issue of never being able to find a pen...we had a baby who wouldn't sleep and sleep deprivation is the enemy of problem solving!

LastPass for passwords.
It links up your phones and computers with all your passwords and you can share passwords with spouse. I never have to remember passwords!

I've become so reliant on LastPass I automatically updated the app, which turned out to be a fucking massive mistake. Not able to view anything on a phone now unless you pay £33 to use it.

Bastards. I paid it because that's the device I mainly use. Bastards.

I bought a long thin brush that goes down my tea pot spout. Before I had this I spent rediculous amounts of time pushing crushed up pieces of kitchen roll down the spout to try to keep it clean. Even DH finds it easy to.use. it cost £1.99

Timide · 28/08/2022 07:28

Using this thread to ask if smb could recommend decent and nice looking storage for girls hair accessories? I'm afraid they are overtaking my house. Literally finding clips and bands everywhere 🙈 not easy when the house is full of girls

Metal clothes pegs. I'm useless at remembering to bring the pegs in and they always go rusty, brittle and self destruct.

These stainless steel ones can be left out in the rain and don't rust. They're also perfect for using as bag clips in the freezer / pantry. They don't go brittle in the cold like plastic bag clips can.

Pegs

I have those pegs too-come the winter, I bring them in and give them a warm soapy bath before I put them away.

Palmtreesandsand · 28/08/2022 07:37

4 pop up laundry baskets that sit in the wardrobe
1 for clothers for charity
1 for the odd items that need ironing
1 for clothes to be mended
1 for clothes to be recycled

I use my mummy hooks for fixing the dog crate into the boot of the car 🥛

Limer · 28/08/2022 08:03

A magnetic whiteboard on my kitchen wall. I stick things like coupons on there, and write reminders/shopping lists on there.

A splatter guard that fits over my frying pan - no more rings of fat to clean following a fry-up!

TheBatwoman · 28/08/2022 08:20

We used the IKEA trolleys as baby changing stations for nappies, wipes, spare clothes and any other baby supplies for our twins. We had one upstairs and one downstairs - it just made life so much easier!

Thinkingblonde · 28/08/2022 08:20

Wire spice racks screwed to the inside of kitchen cupboard doors, game changer. Same on the under sink doors for stuff used regularly such as bleach, washing up liquid, polish etc. it saves time by not having to root around in the depths of said cupboards.
A set of drawers in the wardrobe underneath where DH’s shirts/ trousers hang, it was dead space filled with junk.

A few years ago I saw on one of those home transformation programmes that someone had put some hooks under shelves in their daughter's bedroom and kept all the hairbands on that which was clever. And dd keeps all her bits and bobs in nice smoky glass style plastic pots which were from somewhere like dunelm or ikea.

Thinkingblonde · 28/08/2022 08:23

I’ve got one, it’s really useful.

Whycanineverever · 28/08/2022 08:23

Straw cleaning brushes work great for getting hair out of plug holes!

stillherenow · 28/08/2022 08:24

I'm after ideas for baking storage. The cupboard I keep stuff in is too small (but the only option). I do have some kallax units on the other side and could store stuff on top if it could think of a nice way to do this. DD has taken up baking as a hobby so has lots of tiny pots filled with random ingredients as well as the usual glass jars with sugar etc in. I'd like to make it easier to find bits and to see what I need to stock up on.
