Horror/Thriller recommendations currently streaming?

Having a movie night this weekend, and looking for ideas for a film to watch with good scares? I’m a horror fan so have seen most of the mainstream stuff. Examples of films that I have really enjoyed are like:
⁃ The Others
⁃ The Conjuring (I’ve also seen the films in the conjuring universe and by James Wan)
⁃ The Skeleton Key
⁃ The Grudge
⁃ The Strangers
⁃ Silence of the Lambs
⁃ Get Out

I find it hard to describe the type of horror/thriller I’m into, but I’ll try. I need proper jumps to enjoy a film, I thought films like The Witch and Hereditary were boring. I’m also not into the ‘classic’ horror movies like Hitchcock. Basically I don’t need a film to be thought-provoking or a discussion on current affairs, I just like cheap thrills, but with a decent storyline.

Streaming films I’ve enjoyed over the recent years are
⁃ The Visit
⁃ The Ritual
⁃ He's Out There
⁃ Hellhouse LLC
⁃ Marianne (actually a series but REALLY good)
⁃ The House on Pine Street
⁃ The Taking
⁃ Alone

I’m not into gore, aliens, vampires or werewolves. More supernatural or scary person type of things.

Common themes I seem to enjoy are
⁃ stories set in the woods (but not Cabin in the Woods, really disliked that)
⁃ Stories set in remote houses that are either terrorised by ghosts/random strangers
⁃ Psychological thrillers

If you’re into these kinds of films too, please can you recommend one that you enjoyed? Thanks!

I always recommend Calibre - it’s not well known but is really excellent (Netflix)

m.imdb.com/title/tt6218358/

Just looked at the trailer and realise I've seen this! Yes it was good. I like these unassuming films that are actually good stories

Blumhouse movies.

Sinister is on Netflix - Ethan Hawke is amazing in it, the second one is decent and has the actor who plays Eddie in IT 2 (forget his name!)

Oh I just realised you said 'decent' and not 'descent' 😂 changes the whole meaning.

I didn't know there was a sinister sequel! I'll watch the trailer

Huh I never knew he did all those - I liked Hush but never got round to Haunting of Hill House or Midnight Mass. Might give them a try now!

Saw it last weekend (22 days left now) & it was actually very moving as well as being an interesting horror film. Watch it right to the end!

I'm so jealous you're going to watch Midnight Mass for the first time! Stick with it if you find the first two episodes a bit quiet - it gets SO good.

It looks like just my type of thing. I saw a lot of stuff about HOHH when that was out but I didn’t see much about Midnight Mass. Might give it a go when the kids are packed off to bed tonight… although DH is working away so it will be just me getting spooked 😂 I know I’ll be double checking all the cupboards afterwards!

Yes do! Midnight Mass is also an original of his. Hill House is an adaptation of a book, so is Bly Manor (The Turning of the Screw). Bly Manor was my least favourite, the other 2 are good! Hill House has great jumps and Midnight Mass is a different kind of scary but a good story

This looks really good, thank you! Hadn't thought of searching regular streaming channels

Omg such great recommendations, thanks everyone! I've got a good few on my list now, and a trial for the Shudder app 🙈

This is actually what put me off initially - I’ve read both books and I’m not keen on contemporary adaptations. I usually find they are not faithful enough to be a good adaptation and not original enough to be fresh and new. But I will give Midnight Mass a try - had a look at the trailer and it looks good. Hush really wasn’t my ‘type’ of thing, I just randomly turned over as it was about to start and found myself engrossed!
