Horror/Thriller recommendations currently streaming?

Having a movie night this weekend, and looking for ideas for a film to watch with good scares? I’m a horror fan so have seen most of the mainstream stuff. Examples of films that I have really enjoyed are like:
⁃ The Others
⁃ The Conjuring (I’ve also seen the films in the conjuring universe and by James Wan)
⁃ The Skeleton Key
⁃ The Grudge
⁃ The Strangers
⁃ Silence of the Lambs
⁃ Get Out

I find it hard to describe the type of horror/thriller I’m into, but I’ll try. I need proper jumps to enjoy a film, I thought films like The Witch and Hereditary were boring. I’m also not into the ‘classic’ horror movies like Hitchcock. Basically I don’t need a film to be thought-provoking or a discussion on current affairs, I just like cheap thrills, but with a decent storyline.

Streaming films I’ve enjoyed over the recent years are
⁃ The Visit
⁃ The Ritual
⁃ He's Out There
⁃ Hellhouse LLC
⁃ Marianne (actually a series but REALLY good)
⁃ The House on Pine Street
⁃ The Taking
⁃ Alone

I’m not into gore, aliens, vampires or werewolves. More supernatural or scary person type of things.

Common themes I seem to enjoy are
⁃ stories set in the woods (but not Cabin in the Woods, really disliked that)
⁃ Stories set in remote houses that are either terrorised by ghosts/random strangers
⁃ Psychological thrillers

If you’re into these kinds of films too, please can you recommend one that you enjoyed? Thanks!

Oh what's about the Stephen king film range? The shining is an all time fav here but I also love Christine

DustinsHat · 27/08/2022 21:48

You'd like Stranger Things if you haven't seen it yet. Not a film obviously just an unsolicited recommendation.

purpleme12 · 27/08/2022 21:53

I'm watching Greta at the minute

Drbrowns · 27/08/2022 21:55

The Exorcism of Emily Rose

YellowPlumbob · 27/08/2022 22:09

It’s on my list, waiting for a quiet evening without teenagers to watch it in peace!

If you don’t mind a slasher, The Fear Street movies on Netflix are amazing, major 90s slasher vibes, heavily female cash - me and my teens loved them.

MacaroniBaloney · 28/08/2022 00:04

The Ring.

I've seen this and I agree! It was better than the first one

The Haunting of Hill House on Netflix, but I am a complete wimp and found it too scary to watch so don't know if it is any good as didn't manage the whole first episode.

Final days. Is zombie but it isn't focused on the gore!

Paranormal activity
The cabin in the woods
No one leaves alive

I struggle these days to find anything!

JanesSadLittleLife · 28/08/2022 00:17

Doctor Sleep is good, Stephen King sequel to The Shining. Ewan McGregor's American accent is a bit suspect but his acting is great so we can overlook it. 😊

I'm always trying to find a decent new horrors but they just don't make things scary anymore. I watched an absolutely dire one the other night, story/plot was abysmal, acting dreadful, can't believe it ever got made. Still watched it all though, out of pure stubborn determination. Something like "It Never Sleeps". Rubbish!

WhiteSandyBeach · 28/08/2022 00:38

Midnight Mass was unexpectedly great. Can’t remember if Prime or Netflix but absolutely worth a watch

LaDamaDeElche · 28/08/2022 06:35

Not sure if it's on U.K. Netflix, or only Netflix Spain, but if you don't mind watching with subtitles, Veronica is also a decent film.

TanteRose · 28/08/2022 06:41

I always recommend Calibre - it’s not well known but is really excellent (Netflix)

You sound like me 😂 I watch SO much shit but every once in a while I find something decent. Like not blockbuster material, but good enough to watch at home and hold my interest. Put in a couple jumps and I'm sold!

So the guy who did Midnight Mass is the same guy behind Hill House and Bly Manor. He also did the Hush film (and uses his wife in all of them). Every year around Halloween he does a series, Midnight Mass was his third. I've watched them all, really enjoyed it too! Not what I was expecting at all.
