Just touched down I'm Denmark, gone to rent the car and DP just realised his license photo-card has expired. Public transport not an option due to location as where we're staying requires a car. I only have provisional license.

Any one got any experience? Worth begging the DVLA? Sad

Glad all turned out well. Good luck to your dh.
As an aside Im pretty sure I know which competition it is and you've given away quite a bit of personal info so you might want to change your username.

When do licences expire? I thought they were valid until you were 70.

This ! It’s just the photo card , not the actual licence - you should be ok

So what is he competing in?!?!

janj2301 · 27/08/2022 19:35

you are lucky, I broke down in Exeter (from East London) AA arranged a hire car but my driving licences was still in my maiden name, car insurance in married. CAR hire compnay could see it was me etc but still refused. We had to stay in a hotel and a friend had to drive down to collect us and our luggage and AA towerd our car home over the next week

I have a paper licence too. So long as I don't change address or name then I can continue to use it.
It does expire... on my 70th birthday.
I think that if you get points then you are forced to change to the new photo type licence.

Inkyblue123 · 28/08/2022 16:29

Google gov uk check license. You can share your license details with the car hire company ; endorsements etc.

Inkyblue123 · 28/08/2022 16:35

Just explain due to Covid the DVLA is back logged and you can’t get a new one.

NotAJammyDodger · 29/08/2022 10:26

Sorry not wading through all the messages. But I can understand why in a foreign country they would refuse (i.e. here is my licence and it has expired, they aren’t going to know UK driving regulations.)

I renewed my licence on line. Didn’t need to send a new photo as the questions asked included whether I had a UK passport and its number.

licence arrived at home within 2 days, the photo on is was my passport photo.

not sure this really helps you though in your current situation….

NotAJammyDodger · 29/08/2022 10:27

Also should add renewed passport 3 years ago so maybe that why is was all fine.

Wakeboarding or mountain biking?

Glad you got it sorted 😊

Public transport and taxis or something like that.

...wait! Wait!

What's that you say? "Public transport and taxis or something like that"?

It's left-field, it's out of a clear blue sky, it's a crazy, crazy idea, but it might just work!

I mean, how do you come up this stuff, let alone find the time to type it?

Oh, hang on. The OP said "Public transport not an option due to location as where we're staying requires a car."

But, hey, even so....great idea. Inspired really. Could've worked. Just keep that brilliance coming.

So how did he get on? Hope it was a success.
