Just landed on holiday.... Drivers license expired!

Just touched down I'm Denmark, gone to rent the car and DP just realised his license photo-card has expired. Public transport not an option due to location as where we're staying requires a car. I only have provisional license.

Any one got any experience? Worth begging the DVLA? Sad

Just remember that if you are stopped by the police there is a fine for not physically having your driving licence with you

Utter rubbish.

And here is the .GOV pages with the CORRECT procedure...

BlueReindeer · 26/08/2022 12:46

Yay for the common sense manager!

orbitalcrisis · 26/08/2022 12:53

@Poshjock They're not in the UK though.

Well done!

Licences are one of those things, you don't get reminders.

I hired a car in Spain and had forgotten my licence. My DH scanned it and sent it to them and they were kind enough to let me hire the car.

Oh thank the lord we have a car. So so relieved. I honestly though DP was going to cry when he first realised it was expired and he NEVER cries. He's the second oldest man in the competition and I know it means an awful lot to him. Hurrah hurrah hurrah.

Oh I'm so pleased for you both. Will you let us know how he gets on, even if you don't want to tell us the event? spoil sport Grin

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 26/08/2022 13:10

Is anyone else dying to know what the event is?

Go ops husband!!

Glittertwins · 26/08/2022 13:12

Triathlon/duathlon??

Kerrrmieee · 26/08/2022 13:13

Wow! You owe that manager the best feedback ever!!

Good luck for the event!

👏

Snowdropbulbs · 26/08/2022 13:15

OP I’m so pleased that this worked out for you. Good luck to your husband

There’s so much misinformation on this thread.

  1. Licences are one of those things, you don't get reminders.
I received a reminder letter telling me that my photo was about to expire and threatening me with a fine if I didn’t.

  2. You can’t renew an expired photo card online - it’s a pain as you you need to fill in a paper form and send in a photo.

I renewed it online (not using a paper form) because it’s very much an option if you have a current valid UK passport: www.gov.uk/renew-photo-driving-licence

He's in Denmark not UK - So yes you need insurance certificate, log book with you and in your name/or car hire agreement, driving license or you will be fined on the spot.

Not the point but please tell me he is entering the international tree climbing championships

These aren’t until 9th September.

I noticed my driving license expired, and I couldn't renew it online. It took me ages to get through to DVLA and was told that due to Covid, expired licences were automatically granted an extra 6 months, hence no renewal notice. Mine expired last November and I still haven't had a renewal notice through. I've got a screenshot of the message on my phone in case I'm stopped.

So, I don't think your DH would have been able to renew his licence even if he tried.

You ought to try again, mine expired in Jan, I got a reminder and renewed it online no bother.

AnneShirleysNewDress · 26/08/2022 13:20

So glad you got it sorted OP and best of luck to your husband.

Kennykenkencat · 26/08/2022 13:25

Glad you got it sorted

I booked a family holiday to Las Vegas and California (Very upmarket Airbnb in the Hollywood Hills).

In coming into land in Las Vegas suddenly realised I had forgotten my driving license. Couldn’t hire a car in LV without it. DH had his but he isn’t a confident driver. Dd had hers but was not 21.
Dh did hire a car to drive from LV to LA and dd managed to find a car hire company in a really dodgy area who would rent her a car.

We arrived at out gated Hollywood Hills house in a car we affectionately nick named the Cannabis Wagon. It had 4 very smooth tyres, someone’s credit card and what looked like a joint under one of the seats and on closer inspection the front end was coming away from the car.

We went all over in that car. The looks we got coming back one afternoon from a small film crew who were looking at the area and looking at the car and thinking we had obviously made a wrong turning was especially priceless when they realised that I had my hand out of the window and was operating the gates to the house and we drove in without stopping.😆

Have a lovely time.
Glad you got your car sorted.

I had hired a red Mustang Convertible.
Instead I got a brown Cannabis Wagon

AlexandriasWindmill · 26/08/2022 13:38

Hurrah! Glad it's sorted OP. Good luck to your DP for the event.

Starstar7 · 26/08/2022 13:44

Plot twist: He's competing in the European Rally Championships.

spiderlight · 26/08/2022 13:47

Yay - glad it's sorted and good luck to your DP! You have to come back now and tell us how he gets on :)

Skiphopbump · 26/08/2022 13:48

@Snowdropbulbs you are correct, I forgot the reason why it was such a pain for me was because my license and passport were in different surnames.

whatamigoing2do · 26/08/2022 11:21

Please say it's this OP.

Cigarettesaftersex1 · 26/08/2022 13:57

Glad I decided not to get a photocard licence and stuck with the paper one!

MakingNBaking · 26/08/2022 13:58

Nah, it's the wife-carrying championship but she's too embarrassed to say.
Those Northern Europeans love their wife-carrying [side glance at 9st 10lb dh, no chance there.]

saleorbouy · 26/08/2022 14:04

Glad you got sorted out, good luck in the competition.

AdoraBell · 26/08/2022 14:10

Glad you’ve got the car, best of luck for the competition.

It's not a choice. If you move home, get points on your licence, lose the paper one, reach 70yrs old and still want to drive or anything else that requires a replacement licence, it'll be a photo card one.
