Just landed on holiday.... Drivers license expired!

Just touched down I'm Denmark, gone to rent the car and DP just realised his license photo-card has expired. Public transport not an option due to location as where we're staying requires a car. I only have provisional license.

Any one got any experience? Worth begging the DVLA? Sad

Oh hurray... I love a story with a happy ending! And good luck to your DP!

Rosehugger · 26/08/2022 14:41

Phew. The point is he has a valid driving licence, presumably has for some years!

Glad they used common sense.

gatehouseoffleet · 26/08/2022 14:46

Great to hear a good story about a car hire company - usually they are shysters.
Good luck to your husband!

Not true. You have 7 days to produce it.

OP says she is in Denmark

In Denmark you have to carry it, in Sweden as well

I know someone who got fined 1,000 Danish crowns for popping out to nursery

Theredjellybean · 26/08/2022 15:14

not sure if anyone has said this yet..i had same thing happen in NI ( so technically still UK)
I had NO IDEA photocards expired
i renewed online ( they do not ask for a new photo btw which makes a mockery of the whole thing) and i got my new licence card in the next day's post.
not going to help if on holiday . Unless you can get it sent /couried to you at holiday address ? and you could hire driver /taxi to take you there today ?

EgonSpengler2020 · 26/08/2022 15:20

Sarahconnor1 · 26/08/2022 09:56

It can but DVLA aren't going to courier it over to Denmark

If it can be renewed online, you can then generate a drivers licence check code online, if you give this to the hire company along with your licence number they can check everything on your licence including endorsements. Takes 2 minutes to set up a code.

Oddbutnotodd · 26/08/2022 15:23

Renewed my license recently online . Received new one within 72 hours.

I did get a renewal letter though. Am in England.

Pleased that common sense prevailed.

Blowthemandown · 26/08/2022 15:34

@HangingOver glad to hear this. If I’d seen this earlier I’d have said, it’s about not having points on the licence. Our licence validity is about new photos and proof of ID so actually renewing on line and having confirmation should suffice, plus current expired licence! He should have had an email reminder … good luck with competition anyway!

I noticed my driving license expired, and I couldn't renew it online. It took me ages to get through to DVLA and was told that due to Covid, expired licences were automatically granted an extra 6 months, hence no renewal notice. Mine expired last November and I still haven't had a renewal notice through. I've got a screenshot of the message on my phone in case I'm stopped.

So, I don't think your DH would have been able to renew his licence even if he tried.

Are you sure there is still and extension due to covid? Originally photocard licences or entitlement to drive that expired between 1 February and 31 December 2020 were extended for 11 months from the date of expiry, but sure that has finished now

I renewed mine a couple of months ago online and was here in less that 2 weeks
TBH I dont think the police will be too worried if it out of date, so long as you still have the entitlement to drive

billy1966 · 26/08/2022 16:08

Thank goodness and best of luck.

Several friends got caught out with passports out of date last year, nightmare!

Weirdlynormal · 26/08/2022 16:14

Mrs Hunter??

ChutneyVirgin · 26/08/2022 16:21

It’s a driving licence. Sorry but drivers licence annoys me

Leftbutcameback · 26/08/2022 16:26

Great news! Good luck to your OH! I thi k a lot of people are driving round with expired photocards in this country

100problems · 26/08/2022 16:28

Well there you go, Hertz win the day and new customers for reasonable response to problem. Hope DH wins his event too OP.

momtoboys · 26/08/2022 16:48

So happy for you! Do let us know how he fares in his competition. Good luck and have fun!

doristheelephant · 26/08/2022 17:21

I'm voting for OP going to the Orienteering World Championships...

carefullycourageous · 26/08/2022 17:25

I am so relieved for him! Let us know how he gets on.

(He is a massive prat for not checking that, but glad it worked out!)

HangingOver · 26/08/2022 17:28

Thanks so much for the good wishes everyone Grin we're here and DP and I have firmly marked ourselves out as outsiders already. We stopped at a coffee shop before we could check in and I swear every single table in there stared at us. Some even smirked. For context I was in my plane-wear, harem trousers and my rolling stones t-shirt, and DP in his usual metal band shirt, black jeans and converse. This wasn't a fancy place either, the wlseating was made out of upcycled palettes! But everyone else there was dressed as Beatrice and Eugainie on a boating holiday. I told him he better sodding well win now and punk it up on the rostrum Grin

Sod them, go for it tomorrow!

Honestly it’s not something that I was even aware of - I’m scrupulous about passport expiry dates but wasn’t even aware of the 10 year renewal on photocards

SmudgeButt · 27/08/2022 17:59

So glad it's been sorted. And this isn't meant as a dig but chances are that he didn't get a notice as DVLA doesn't have the right address. That can be a whole other mess you may need to sort when you get home.

Meanwhile - hope he wins!!

sussexlady · 27/08/2022 18:05

I haven't read all the posts. I had to renew my passport a couple of weeks ago because I hit 70. I renewed it on line, quite easy, and I didn't have to provide a new photo I had to give my driving licence number and my passport number and they take the photo off your passport themselves nothing had to be posted, which I thought was a bit spooky, but helpful for you at the moment, and you have both of those with you. I wrote in my diary the day I did it expecting it to take ages but I got it back in 2 or 3 days I was amazed. I did have to cut my old licence in half and send it back but I would say that I received the new licence before they would have reeived my cut up old one. If you do it on line you can print your application and the receipt that you get when they acknowledge that they have received your application within a few minutes. All this posting thing is old fashioned now and I would think with all this information on line now would be good enough these days. Hertz is big company and has been going for years I expect, propably one of the original car hire places. Surely this isn't impossible to sort out, all the information you need could by available very quickly you just wouldn't have a piece of paper in your hand. Throw in the sports thing and I am sure someone there will know what to do. You can't be the first and you won't be the last to do this I don't expect

TiaraBoo · 27/08/2022 18:10

Good luck to your DH!
