Are Yorkshire/Scotland too cold for a holiday in early November?

We'd like to go on a nice break to celebrate my DHs birthday and the anniversary of our first kiss (it's been seven years and for some odd reason it feels like a milestone!) I really like the idea of it, but also don't want to be soggy and cold (especially with a doggo and a 3yo)

Have you got a coat?

PersonaNonGarter · 24/08/2022 15:24

Well, you aren’t going for the weather, right? And presumably you know these places are actually inhabited. By actual humans??

Namechangefail123 · 24/08/2022 15:27

Yes I do have a coat BUT I get cold very easily

Maybe, maybe not - it's pretty much impossible to tell more than a couple of weeks ahead.
Also it depends what sort of things you want to do - the 3 yo and dog limit the options under cover.

MarmiteCoriander · 24/08/2022 15:34

'Anniversary of our 1st kiss!!!' well thats a new one on me 😃

Do you live in a hot country, hence you are asking?

I visited Edinburgh in Nov a few years ago. Yes, it was cool, but not bitterly cold and only marginally colder than London. If you feel the cold, just take thin long johns to wear under jeans and layer on the top with a heavier coat over everything. Warm gloves, hat and scarf. You likely wont even need ALL of that in Nov, as I find Jan/Feb to be the coldest months. Also get some warm, winter boots with a thick sole.

Namechangefail123 · 24/08/2022 15:40

No, I don't live in a hot country, but I'm originally from one and live in the mildest bit of the UK. I do have a pair of Sorels so those will come with me. I think the idea is just to do exploring (Hadrian's wall, city sightseeing, and maybe a hike around the Dales).

I'm central Scotland and I'd say it's more December - February that's the coldest so November should be okay but more than likely rain 😂

Mummyoflabradors · 24/08/2022 15:43

It’s not cold in Scotland in early November and we also have dogs and 3 year olds here as well you know🤷‍♀️

Namechangefail123 · 24/08/2022 15:45

I think I prefer cold weather over rain ;(

You just need to be prepared for a range of weather! Coats, wellies, fleeces etc

We had glorious October weather in Orkney, but equally it could have been wall to wall rain, it was just good luck.

jinglejanglemorning · 24/08/2022 15:48

This is my general rule of thumb:

Yorkshire (I'm talking North or East, West is cooler /wetter as you approach the pennines) is a couple of degrees cooler than the SE. Might feel chillier at the coast. East Coast not generally as rainy as the west.

Edinburgh is a couple of degrees cooler than Yorkshire.

Early Nov is unlikely to be freezing.

Don't sue me if I'm wrong.

Twospaniels · 24/08/2022 15:50

😂
no such thing as bad weather, just poor clothing choices!
get your wellies and big coat and scarf and you’ll be fine.

Mrsjayy · 24/08/2022 15:53

It will probably be raining and cold although not freezing but outdoorsy in North Britain In winter isn't what I would call a great holiday .

Malie · 24/08/2022 15:54

I certainly wouldn’t go to Scotland at all as according to their first Minister the Scots have an undying hatred of the English

countrygirl99 · 24/08/2022 15:55

It's the UK. The weather might be mild and pleasant, it might be cold but crisp and sunny or it might piss down the entire time. You won't know until you get there and the same would apply to the whole country (but with slightly less risk of rain in East Anglia).

ethelredonagoodday · 24/08/2022 15:56

I think you're unlikely to be able to wear a bikini, but other than that, I think you'd be ok.

If she's planning on visiting Hadrian's wall and the Yorkshire dales, she won't need to. The former is in Cumbria, Northumbria and Tyne&Wear isn't it?Grin

Namechangefail123 · 24/08/2022 16:01

I've been to Scotland 4 times (maybe 5) and loved it! My DH has never been there though

Take your Big Coat and you'll be reet.

liveforsummer · 24/08/2022 16:06

No one can tell. It's unlikely to be hot of course but it could be dry and mild, could be bright and crisp, cooks be wet and miserable pretty much the same as anywhere else in the UK. Could be warmer than where you are currently, could be colder than where you are currently or could be the same. You take your chances with any Uk break

What?! When has she ever said that?! 😆

GingerFoxInAT0phat · 24/08/2022 16:09

We did a week in Inverness in December last year and it wasn’t wasn’t as cold as I was expecting. It snowed on the day we left. We then did a day in Edinburgh where it was drizzling on and off.

Just find somewhere to stay and book it. Take clothes for all weathers.

Mardyface · 24/08/2022 16:09

It'll probably be grey and a bit chilly, possibly damp. But that's when you see Yorkshire in its true state as far as I'm concerned. If you're walking and sightseeing it doesn't matter too much as long as you have good outerwear.

If you are the kind of person who gets really depressed by grey skies and a fine horizontal rain hiking in the Dales is probably not for you in November.

HappyMaltesers · 24/08/2022 16:13

Could be snowing, could be cold and raining, could be warm and raining, could be sunny and nice.
Could be all of the above in the same day.

Just pack lots of layers and then dress appropriately!
