Are Yorkshire/Scotland too cold for a holiday in early November?

We'd like to go on a nice break to celebrate my DHs birthday and the anniversary of our first kiss (it's been seven years and for some odd reason it feels like a milestone!) I really like the idea of it, but also don't want to be soggy and cold (especially with a doggo and a 3yo)

I certainly wouldn’t go to Scotland at all as according to their first Minister the Scots have an undying hatred of the English

What are you talking about?

AuntieMarys · 24/08/2022 16:16

We go walking all the time in North Yorkshire in winter

BarrelOfOtters · 24/08/2022 16:18

It gets dark early in November.....

Namechangefail123 · 24/08/2022 16:19

Ah good point about that, it probably gets dark around 4 (to take into consideration for the hikes).

I'm central Scotland and I'd say it's more December - February that's the coldest so November should be okay but more than likely rain 😂

I’d agree. I’m on the east coast in the sunniest city.
The west is considerable milder but always pissing rain, I’d definitely rather layer up for a slightly lower temperature but less rain

Well I’m Scottish & married and English man so we don’t all hate “the English”

Have you got a coat?

🤣🤣🤣

Brendabigbaps · 24/08/2022 16:29

Assuming your in the south, imagine it being just the same as where you are now but 3-4 degrees colder!!

your post has just proven why we have a north south divide! It’s still the uk!

It's mutual - we don't like her either.

I’m in Yorkshire and I get very cold too. I don’t find it too cold until jan/feb really and I hibernate for a few months.

Arenanewbie · 24/08/2022 16:38

I would do city sightseeings but not Hadrian wall and lakes. It will be cold and dark in November so realistically you will waste your money. November is quite miserable.
I would plan around city staying and a bit of outdoor. There are plenty to see in Leeds, York, Durham, along the coast etc. Just look up on TripAdvisor or ask there.

Sgtmajormummy · 24/08/2022 16:41

I took 13yo DD to Yorkshire for a week in late November and we had the best fun ever.

Yes, it was cold. Our car windows were hoar-frosted some mornings and we (coming from a mild European climate) needed full Winter duvets and clothes.
BUT the beautiful scenery and the wonderful people made up for it.
Driving up the Castle Howard entryway in the mist, listening to a brass band concert in a working men’s club and eating Harry Ramsden fish and chips are memories I shall treasure.

I always abide by this advice

Malie · 24/08/2022 16:58

The last time we went to Scotland the weather was absolutely dreadful - cold and rain. In England we heard it was glorious sunshine at the time. 🙄

Actually second this keep the country stuff for spring/summer.

Yes I do have a coat BUT I get cold very easily

So you have Raynauds? I live in Yorkshire and feel the cold but if you stick a nice coat on with jumpers etc you will be fine. November isn't that bad to be honest. It is lovely up North in Yorkshire.

Yeah we arranged it specially for you

Agoodsurprise · 24/08/2022 17:15

I have climbed a hill in Scotland in November and had to strip down to a t shirt as it was so warm.

That was one experience. I also have plenty of cold wet Scottish holiday experiences ( November and otherwise!). You can't predict it.

badbaduncle · 24/08/2022 17:35

You're asking if it will be cold and wet in Yorkshire in November?
Yes, yes it probably will, obviously. Too cold for a holiday? No. People go on holiday to Iceland you know- it's not a temperature dependent thing

NS arranged that when she heard you were coming

Maytodecember · 24/08/2022 17:44

For what you’re planning rain is more an enemy than cold. If you’re cold you can walk faster, add extra layer etc… If you’re soaked through there’s not a lot you can do.
Id go for a city based break with a trip out to the countryside when it’s not raining!
York has the Jorvik centre, the Railway museum , the Cathedral, the Shambles. I seem to remember going on a river trip.
Edinburgh just has everything and you might like a trip to Portobello or cross the bridge, drive up through Fife ( stunning) to St Andrews.
