Are Yorkshire/Scotland too cold for a holiday in early November?

We'd like to go on a nice break to celebrate my DHs birthday and the anniversary of our first kiss (it's been seven years and for some odd reason it feels like a milestone!) I really like the idea of it, but also don't want to be soggy and cold (especially with a doggo and a 3yo)

I live in Yorkshire, there’s a photo of me and DH with the dog sat in teeshirts outside the local country pub, which was taken in November. There’s also one of us building a snowman with DNs in November. Obviously different years, but you get the idea I’m sure.

Last November we went to the Auchrannie resort on Isle of Arran with our then almost three year old-it was fantastic and great for toddlers. The weather was crisp but sunny 3 days out of 5. Resort has a couple of restaurants and there is a lovely food scene on the island itself, two pools at the resort and also a little farm you can visit on the island plus a NT castle and nice walking trails. Would highly recommend!

York has the Jorvik centre, the Railway museum , the Cathedral, the Shambles. I seem to remember going on a river trip.

The first 3 of those don't really work with a dog though.

ErrolTheDragon · 24/08/2022 18:13

Tbh if you've got a 3yo, for a November break I'd probably think about not taking the dog.

November in Scotland can be cold and dry, mild and wet and any type of weather in between. One thing it will definitely have, if you go to the North, is much shorter hours of daylight than you are used to.

User5433 · 24/08/2022 18:22

My wedding anniversary is mid November and I am Scottish, we always spend it somewhere in the country, been to Edinburgh a few times, it can be cold, but make sure you have things booked to do in the evening because it can be a little bit of a nightmare to find something to do last minute. Have you any idea where in Scotland you would like? (If you choose to go there). Sorry if you have said already and I missed it. Outside of Edinburgh we have been to to Glasgow, Crieff, Stirling, Inverness, just outside Aberdeen, Dundee (and Broughty Ferry), Loch Lomond, Aviemore, Inverness and Perth. So small towns to larger cities. Some I would recommend more than others! Do you like log fires, activities, theatre, comedy clubs, walks, shopping.... What do you think of as your ideal weekend?

User5433 · 24/08/2022 18:27

Sorry I misread the question! The weather has been anything from crisp and cold, to torrential rain! It's impossible to say, it has only really affected us once or twice though, it comes with the territory!

Northumberlandlass · 24/08/2022 18:28

Your geography is a bit off…. Hadrian’s Wall is in Northumberland which is a canny distance from Yorkshire, which is a trek from Scotland. HOWEVER, I wouldn’t take a 3 yr old hiking on the wall as it’s quite rocky in places!

If you pack your big coat & prepare for all weathers, you could have an amazing break in Northumberland as there is so much to do for families!

User5433 · 24/08/2022 18:33

And I love visiting England as a Scot as well, long list of places in England I have visited!

JudgeRindersMinder · 24/08/2022 17:12

Yeah we arranged it specially for you

Everyone knows Sturgeon has a whole fleet of those weather manipulation machines that usually only get rolled out for royal weddings and Olympics.

RooniIWazlib · 24/08/2022 18:43

How long are you planning on going away for? Yorkshire is bloody huge. And Edinburgh is hours away from there.

ShowOfHands · 24/08/2022 15:23

Have you got a coat?

Grin This!

MaChienEstUnDick · 24/08/2022 18:51

The early sunset is the killer on an outdoorsy holiday - you'll want accommodation rather than a hotel as the evenings are long - you'll go nuts cooped up with a wee DC and a dog.

Namechangefail123 · 24/08/2022 18:51

As someone in the West Country, I can see that the whole region looks huge BUT it's so far away from me that I want to make the most of it.

Mmmm I was hoping to stay at a shepherds hut

Oof, that's a nice choice for a long summer's evening with DC toddling and the dog frolicking... coming in from a freezing hike in the pitch black at 4pm, not so much.

JamMakingWannaBe · 24/08/2022 18:59

There will be hundreds of Scottish holiday cottages with lovely wood burning stoves you can rent.

If it's cold and raining you can snuggle up with a good book and some board games.

If it's not - you have the highlights of the local area to discover!

As PP, November can be "dry cold" which is a heck of a lot better than "wet cold".

UrsulaPandress · 24/08/2022 19:06

Cut your losses and head to Northumberland.

Sack off the Shepherd’s Hut. Rent a dog friendly cottage.

You wont make the most of it if you spend a lot of your time driving.

I'm not sure - if you choose to visit on an England only bank holiday you are almost guaranteed good weather (check Mondays forecast after the miserable week we've had). Not sure what sort of sick game she's playing there? 👀🤷🏼‍♀️😆

Hmm, it rained every day bar one where I am in Yorkshire over the Platinum Jubilee bumper-bank-holiday-weekend. Perhaps Sturgeon's weather machine north of us and the Queen's one down south concentrated the crap weather in the centre of the British isles!

liveforsummer · 24/08/2022 19:54

@Antarcticant yes, I think the force fields are maybe working against each other creating disaster in their wake 😆

WhiteFire · 24/08/2022 20:03

Pre- children and small children we always went on holiday early December to Northumbria staying very near the Scottish Border.

One memorable year we had lots of snow, I must have worn a coat that year.

To be honest OP I regret now that I’ve taken your post seriously. Have I understood correctly? you can’t tolerate cold weather and you are going to cover all Yorkshire plus Lake District, Hadrian wall and Edinburgh in early November staying in a shepherd hut with 3 years old and a dog. Oh yes, and with your 40y.o. husband because it’s the 7th anniversary of your first kiss. How long are you going to travel? Until the 8th anniversary of your first sex?

Namechangefail123 · 25/08/2022 08:39

We stayed in a shepherds hut in Devon in late April and really loved it, which is why I'd love to stay in one again. We're thinking of anything between 5 days and a week.
