End of Fish & Chips shops?

According to the BBC, some are facing a drop of 30% in custom and face 'extinction'. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-somerset-62650572

Personally, I wouldn't buy a meal from one nowadays, a small haddock and chips costs £8.50, 1/4 of my weekly shop (live alone).

I know from previous threads they tend to be cheaper in the North of England, but even so all of them are having to pay more for oil, fish & spuds.

Have any closed down near you?

We had a chip supper last night. Ours is still reasonable as long as you don't have plaice/cod/haddock. It has recently started doing hake, which is much cheaper. We had two pies, one hake, one sausage, two curry sauce, and two large chips for less than £20. That fed two adults and three teenagers.

Cod and chips for the five of us would have been closer to £40, assuming 3 fish were shared between, 5 (and with two essential pots of curry sauce).

Ours no longer opens as late in the evenings.

Oh god I really love fish and chips. My favourite one was over £11 for cod and chips, and I like to get it weekly, so I've changed to one that does cod bites, and get those instead. Cod bites and chips cost me about £6.50, and I find it more than filling enough.

What I've noticed is that these fish shops are also on ordering apps, but chage significantly more for the meal (before delivery). Eg the shop that sells cod and chips for just over £11 is £14.99 online.

So I guess shops are giving you a 'discount' for coming in, and making some profit for those who prefer the convenience of delivery. Hopefully this is sustainable!

Loads of chippys around here, that may be why we pay less than £10 for fish and chips (large) which is tto much for me. I have mini fish and chips for around £5-6

Some will, some won’t…..

But this post has made me hungry for chips! 😂

EquallyDivided · 25/08/2022 15:49

I've never come across one that does delivery (no Deliveroo etc here), and they do tend to close earlier than other takeaways but fish and chips is more of a daytime / early evening thing than other takeaways IMO. I have just walked past my nearest one, it is a big sit-in one, the smell was amazing, I was nearly lured in.

Roaring trade here - Plymouth and down in cornwall where we go on holiday - the one here does a solid trade and shuts at 8pm!

It's loads more though and we don't have it as often but now we have learned to freeze chips it's a bonus!

I will be gutted if they all disappear I love proper chips.

The best chips I've had in guz come from the kebab shop on an estate I visit quite often. I think the owner is Turkish but I'm not sure.

pastypirate · 25/08/2022 16:07

The fancier chippies are on Deliveroo here too. We have at least 3 tiers of chip shops in Plymouth it's a serious business!

bananaboats · 25/08/2022 16:08

Quite a few chippys where I am and all seem to be as busy as ever.

Lonelycrab · 25/08/2022 16:12

The best ones I’ve had are in Aldeburgh. Their queue is sometimes 50 yards long so can’t see them going out of business. Amazing taste, sure it’s down to the batter…

Wbeezer · 25/08/2022 16:14

Ours has a cafe attached (scottish Italian chippy with home made ice-cream etc), so we eat in rather than take away. Feels better value and everything also avoid going soggy in the steam from being wrapped up.

Stellaris22 · 25/08/2022 16:16

I love our local fish and chips. But, he drives an expensive SUV and last time I went in I heard some unpleasant homophobic slurs. So I won’t be sad when he goes out of business.

SleepingAgent · 25/08/2022 20:10

Our nearest chip shop is now around £8-£9 for haddock and chips. It's not enough to share. Last time we had it, we were saying it will be a rarer treat from now on as £30ish with mushy peas, pickled onions etc for tea is not a weekly option now.

xsquared · 25/08/2022 20:41

Pretty much zero chance of extinction here, as I live in the north and have at least 4 chippy's within a mile from where I live. One did close down during Covid but we are still spoilt for choice.

A normal sized portion of fish and chips from the most popular one is still a steal at £8.50. DH and I went to Roker the other week and even when I ordered the smaller portion at £5, it was more than enough for me.

The smaller chippy's don't offer delivery but we usually collect anyway if we have a takeaway/carry out.

SatinHeart · 25/08/2022 20:48

I live in the sticks and as well as the cost it's the fact that Chinese/Indian/pizza all deliver and the chippy doesn't.

Recently a chippy van has started coming every other Friday night and parking up in the village for a couple of hours. It's very popular so the demand is there.
