End of Fish & Chips shops?

According to the BBC, some are facing a drop of 30% in custom and face 'extinction'. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-somerset-62650572

Personally, I wouldn't buy a meal from one nowadays, a small haddock and chips costs £8.50, 1/4 of my weekly shop (live alone).

I know from previous threads they tend to be cheaper in the North of England, but even so all of them are having to pay more for oil, fish & spuds.

Have any closed down near you?

I live in a northern town with 30k population and have at least 7 chippies in walking distance. I frequent the best and it's £6.20 for fish and chips, but the portions are so big it feeds 2 people. It's gone up by 70p from last year, but is still a very good price for a meal for 2.

CleopatrasBeautifulNose · 24/08/2022 12:30

There is a new one opening in our small town.

Blackdiame · 24/08/2022 12:31

There is only 1 in our small town so its always busy but it also does kebabs, and burgers. There is always a bit of a wait but they now do online ordering which is great. I doubt they'll ever close but I can imagine bigger towns where there is much bigger selection might struggle.

We go once a fortnight and have to queue for 20-30 minutes to get our food.

MajorCarolDanvers · 24/08/2022 12:31

£9.50 for fish and chips where I live

Which compares to

Chinese chicken curry and rice at £8.20

Indian chicken tikka masala and rice £12.25

They all seem busy with queues etc but like every business they will be struggling with rising costs.

I hope they survive.

CaptainCreepsBourgeMobile · 24/08/2022 12:32

Bloody hell, £15 for cod.

NanaNelly · 24/08/2022 12:33

A proper Scottish fish supper is worth it’s weight in gold.

Christmasiscominghohoho · 24/08/2022 12:14

Cod and chips is about £10 here.

  • curry sauce at £2-3 a pot

I normally share that with my son and my daughter only eats chips at about £3 a bag.

it’s not as cheap as it was but ours is always packed.

Good grief! Not many places do cod here, mainly haddock, but those prices are ridiculous! £6-£8 here for haddock and chips. Northern England.

CaptainCreepsBourgeMobile · 24/08/2022 12:34

I dont eat fish and chip shop chips whilst I love them they do not love me

Intriguing

bringonthesunshinefinally · 24/08/2022 12:34

I won’t pay for takeaway fish and chips anymore as I can cook it reasonably well at home for a fraction of the cost . I can’t however cook a decent curry or Chinese so I’m still happy to pay for those .

ODFOx · 24/08/2022 12:35

Good fish and chips is the food of the gods, but it can't be as cost effective as mystery meat kebabs or pizza to make.
I can completely understand why the prices have gone up as there is less opportunity to put ingredient cost down.
We have it rarely, but I hope they survive.

Rosewaterblossom · 24/08/2022 12:35

Alot also only take cash which is a pain because people don't tend to have cash anymore, only card. Many a chippy has lost my trade because I don't have cash and it's a hassle trying to find a cash point.

Gone are the days where paying by card was a pain waiting for people to enter pins etc. Now it's tap and go so much quicker.

bringonthesunshinefinally · 24/08/2022 12:36

A medium sized cod and chips is roughly £12 near us now .

EquallyDivided · 24/08/2022 12:37

Ours always seem busy. It's about £12 for cod and chips at the one we use but the portions are huge, we get one cod and chips and a sausage and it feeds three of us (and we aren't sparrow-like eaters). They do KFC type chicken, burgers etc too. But the only other options here are Chinese, Indian and Dominoes which are much more expensive, no McDs etc.

CornishGem1975 · 24/08/2022 12:37

We always find a haddock is big enough for two so one piece of haddock and a portion of chips feeds two adults in our house. Normally about £7 which seems okay.

emmathedilemma · 24/08/2022 12:38

The one I go to is in a really deprived area but it is always packed (part of the reason i go is because it's always really fresh because it's so busy) but I do wonder how people afford it.

AuntieMarys · 24/08/2022 12:38

2 fish, 1 chips, mushy peas £15 here in the north

APurpleSquirrel · 24/08/2022 12:47

Smallish semi-rural town in SW (not tourist area) & we have at least 5 chip shops, all doing fine by the looks of it.
Several have now branches out in offering deliveries.

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 24/08/2022 12:47

I bought halloumi (I'm vegetarian, it comes looking like fish fingers) & chips from the van the other week. First time since covid, it was £8,50 for a small (those hamburger type boxes) 3 pieces & a handful of chips plus a Pepsi Max. Pre covid, without the drink, it was £4.50 having gone up from £3.50 about 6 months previously.

it wasn't as good as I remember, which was both disappointing (waited so long to have it) & pleasing as it means I won't be 'missing it' too much!

I'll try it again, but not for a while & I'll remember my bottle of water next time!

given the roaring trade at both the van & the chippy here, I don't think either of them will be closing anytime soon. They're charging enough that it should be viable even with the increased costs to them.

quicklybeendrivenmad · 24/08/2022 12:47

Also in the North Fish Chips and Peas £14.45 at out local chippy

Rewis · 24/08/2022 12:52

I like fish and chips but very rarely get the urge to buy it.

NKFell · 24/08/2022 12:57

Small tourist town - we have 3 and they literally have queues out the door most lunchtimes and every afternoon/evening from about 5.

£9.20 at one, £7.20 at another and no idea of the third because they don't have a website 😂I use the £7.20 one because slightly less touristy.

Rapidtango · 24/08/2022 12:57

We moved recently - old area, fish and chips £12, new area £8. Still gone up and DH and I usually share one if it's a lunchtime thing.

NKFell · 24/08/2022 12:58

Sorry those prices are for cod/haddock and chips.

ElBandito · 24/08/2022 12:59

Like ShirleyPhallus we also go for chips and a questionable sausage. Much cheaper.
