End of Fish & Chips shops?

Ifailed · 24/08/2022 12:05

According to the BBC, some are facing a drop of 30% in custom and face 'extinction'. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-somerset-62650572

Personally, I wouldn't buy a meal from one nowadays, a small haddock and chips costs £8.50, 1/4 of my weekly shop (live alone).

I know from previous threads they tend to be cheaper in the North of England, but even so all of them are having to pay more for oil, fish & spuds.

Have any closed down near you?

Dont get fish very often but we get chips and gravy or chips and sausage at least once a month.

I don’t tend to go to parties that serve chips! I love a good party 🎉
How can anyone seriously eat chips every single week?! 😳
Thats nor moderation!

I have very visible abs and I eat chips every weekend. People who aren’t obese can enjoy food.

Are you genuinely confused about how I can eat a portion of chips once every week? Maybe I could vlog it or create some sort of tutorial for you? “How to eat chips”.

TattiePants · 24/08/2022 15:38

They all seem to be doing well in my northern city. I probably have 15 to choose from within a few miles of my house (I'm on the coast) but always buy from the same family run chain that has 6 shops. We probably only go once a month but it would be a shame if any have to close.

There are 3 within a 5 minute drive, all of them
are packed! I went last night, chips and gravy
for £4. Bargain

Sammy5654 · 24/08/2022 15:42

I need to switch of this thread 😂 I'm just repeating to myself. Wednesday night is not chippy night, Wednesday night is not chippy night.... I mean come on, chips and gravy was just the last straw!

WEDNESDAY NIGHT IS A CHIPPY NIGHT.

I might get some tonight now 🤣 although I just spent £100 in Aldi on a weeks shop so I shouldn’t 😅

Christmasiscominghohoho · 24/08/2022 15:45

I was meant to quote the post under the one I did.
Im not sure what happened 😂

DaisyJoy1 · 24/08/2022 15:49

It's so bland and now overpriced too. I'm genuinely surprised so many people love it!

OhmygodDont · 24/08/2022 15:52

Our local is horrible yet some how won an award. We went to one the other £65 for five people two sausage and chips, three fish and chips.

most sell kebabs and pizza on the side now.

Sammy5654 · 24/08/2022 15:55

@Christmasiscominghohoho

Love it. 😂Just texted the OH, Wednesday night IS an amazing chippy night, it's a nice day and we might as well enjoy a it while it's here.

What is it about food shop days and takeaways! It's strange because I can be bad for that, it's like all your energy goes on getting the food in and you reward yourself with a chippy!

Yorkshire fish and chips are not bland. Especially when they've been cooked in beef dripping

Quite easily

Yes it is!

Despite competition from the ubiquitous cheap doner kebab & fried chicken shops, there are still a few fish & chip shops in this area of South London. My local has medium cod & chips for £13. For my money I reckon there are tastier takeaway options in the area: charcoal grilled shish kebabs, proper jerk pork/chicken, peri-peri lamb chops, lamb curry...

MulberryMoon · 24/08/2022 16:14

Ours is still very popular. SE. I sometimes get a delivery from one

JamTuesday · 24/08/2022 16:22

The tastier traditional London rock fish (huss dog fish) used to be cheaper than cod, now it's the same.

Vecnasnurse · 24/08/2022 16:30

Not in Devon and Cornwall! The chippies on the sea front are doing a roaring trade. My local one (in deprived area) does kids meal boxes for £2.50 each, choice of sausage/nuggets/fishcake plus chips, cup drink, lollipop, colouring book and crayons. Large cod and chips with curry sauce is about £8.

We went to Newquay a month ago and I couldn't belive the prices! £15 for a cod and chips, and you have to fight the seagulls for it.

tootiredtoocare · 24/08/2022 16:53

North East of England - most chippies have expanded their menus to also do pizza/burger/kebabs etc, which are cheaper options both for them and customers, and we have quite a few on the coast who have become cafes with a sit in option (add bread & butter and tea!), or seafood restaurants with a proper menu. They have to contend with much more diverse options - as well as the obvious Indian/Chinese, we've got, just off the top of my head, Lebanese, Brazilian, Japanese, French crepes, and there are more.

bakewellbride · 24/08/2022 16:55

We recently spent £80 on fish and chips once when a few of my in laws came to visit. I was shocked at the amount, can't afford to do that again in a while! £80!

MyNameIsAngelicaSchuyler · 24/08/2022 16:56

I eat chips every week too! Not usually from the chippy but homemade. Am definitely not overweight, if anything slightly under, so DFO with your generalisations.

tootiredtoocare · 24/08/2022 16:58

Prices for comparison from the one we use - £7.80 cod & chips, £2.50 for a pie or a sausage, 4 mozzarella sticks with dip £2.75, curry sauce, gravy, mushy peas all £1.

Cheeselog · 24/08/2022 16:59

Tbh there are so many chip shops and kebab places (which also sell chips) around here I have no idea how they are all sustained. We very rarely go, the food is just too greasy and not nice. It’s one of those things where the idea is so much better than the reality IME.

Ifailed · 24/08/2022 20:37

Interesting comments. We have people who spend over £2000 per year on F&C (and good for them if it's part of a happy household), and others who see the price rises.
Sadly I think it will only get worse, especially as this year's potato crop looks poor due to the dry summer - how many shops will see out the winter?

OP posts:
IHateWasps · 24/08/2022 20:57

It still seems to be popular here. I've only checked one localish shop but it's £5:90 for fish and chips(£4:90 at lunch) and £8:40 for a large fish and chips,(Two pieces of haddock)

TheYearOfSmallThings · 24/08/2022 21:01

They are doing a roaring trade near me, at least the good ones. I don't think they are especially dear if you compare them to other takeaways? And a regular cod and chips from my local chipper is plenty for me and DS.

userxx · 24/08/2022 21:09

@Christmasiscominghohoho No way is that large!! I'd be fuming.
