End of Fish & Chips shops?

According to the BBC, some are facing a drop of 30% in custom and face 'extinction'. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-somerset-62650572

Personally, I wouldn't buy a meal from one nowadays, a small haddock and chips costs £8.50, 1/4 of my weekly shop (live alone).

I know from previous threads they tend to be cheaper in the North of England, but even so all of them are having to pay more for oil, fish & spuds.

Have any closed down near you?

we only buy chips to share now, i cook the fish at home to go with it, it's not the same & it means i don't get my night off cooking, but the kids still think it's a great treat

Sammy5654 · 24/08/2022 13:56

A fish supper at my local chippy comes with 2 fish, they have a small supper option with one (which is a few pounds cheaper). But if you add a side, you could split the full supper in half and still have a decent amount each. Saves on calories as well, and still supports the chippy (we wouldn't be able to afford two suppers often).

I'm hungry now.... and I can smell vinegar!

No bad thing with our obesity levels….

We have excellent chip shops here, it is expensive but the portions are so huge we share one meal. A haddock and chips is easily split and I bloody love cod roe, which is cheaper but not on every menu now. Don't think they'll close.

RewildingAmbridge · 24/08/2022 14:02

Ours are thriving, but I live by the seaside, so the tourist trade alone over the summer will keep them going I'd imagine

TenoringBehind · 24/08/2022 14:08

East Mids - £14 per person for cod and chips. Just too expensive for a family.

CoffeeIsForClosers · 24/08/2022 14:09

I absolutely love fish and chips, and the very questionable (thanks PP!) sausages too. So I would definitely support my local chippy IF it was good. Sadly, the only one near me does terrible chips - bland, flabby and full of black bits. We go every so often to see if they've improved, but they never have.

Found a brilliant chippy on holiday, best we've ever had. Even DH said so, and he's not a fish and chip guy at all.

Comefromaway · 24/08/2022 14:12

I have a chippy twice a week, on a Tuesday at work we have Chippy Tuesday and the whole office orders, then as a family we have a Friday night chippy.

Prices are expensive but a normal portion is way too large for one person. I tend to either have a kids meal or a mini fish and we share a large portion of chips between 3 of us.

My Tuesday kids fish, chips and peas is £3.50 and Fridays we spend around £17 for three of us (mini fish, fishcake, scampi, large chips & 2 large mushy peas)

I dont eat fish and chip shop chips whilst I love them they do not love me

Intriguing

Same here.

I live abroad and can't get decent fish and chips, so I was really looking to coming home and going to our award-winning chippy. I only ate half a portion of chips, but I felt so ill afterwards and had really bad indigestion. This time when I came back to the UK, I avoided the chip shop and went out for a (very good) pizza instead. I make chips fairly regularly at home, so I can't understand why chip shop chips made me feel so bad.

cushioncovers · 24/08/2022 14:19

Nope it's still a really popular takeaway around our part of the country. The crappy stingy ones will close but that's their fault the good ones are still queued out of the door in our local towns.

So you think the country’s collective obesity issues has nothing to do with eating food that has been fried in fat and is highly highly calorific? I can’t believe people even still eat fish and chips and I’m amazed the shops are even open at all. It’s just a heart attack and furred up arteries in paper wrappings.

You must be fun at parties 🎉😂

bumbledeedum · 24/08/2022 14:34

Not sure how busy our local ones are but we've said the same re prices recently, it's £26-£30 for 2 adults and a pre-schooler here and we share the chips so just too expensive for what it is for us. Especially since our local (& very delicious) Indian is only about £5 more for the 3 of us with left overs for lunch the next day.

CookPassBabtridge · 24/08/2022 14:34

I'm in Leeds centre most days, outskirts and then in my local area they are still always busy, people will always love fish and chips. They are unlike any other takeaway.

I guess if someone ate it for every meal then you'd have a point.
Once a week does no harm ..... you've heard of moderation yeah?

LateSummerLobelia · 24/08/2022 14:35

My obesity issue has to do with binge eating disorder and other eating disorders directly related to my parents monitoring and being critical of my weight and shaming me for it which ahs resulted in severe MH eating issues.

Nowt to do with a £12 fish and chip meal that is an occasional treat.

Not sure about anyone else but I am willing to bet it's more complicated than stupid and ignorant English people enjoying a cod and chips.

NotMeNoNo · 24/08/2022 14:39

Fish and chips is a takeaway meal - it's always going to be more expensive than buying ingredients (even from Gousto) and cooking them at home. You make that choice when you go for a takeaway or restaurant meal. Do you think they shouldn't pay the staff or something?

It's not a surprise that their business is being challenged by drop off in custom due to people being less able to afford takeaways, the increase in prices of ingredients, fuel, energy and the bad potato harvest.

NotMeNoNo · 24/08/2022 14:40

At least fish and chips aren't ultra processed food!

MarshaMelrose · 24/08/2022 14:43

We did a 2 month cruise round the Caribbean. Great food, fresh, wide selection. We got the cruiselink coach back to the North. As the driver got to our drop off point, he said, "we're back just in time for a chippy tea".
The coach was alight with ooos and ahhhs. They couldn't wait to get to their local chippies.
Cheese and onion pie and chips forever! 💕

I don’t tend to go to parties that serve chips! I love a good party 🎉
How can anyone seriously eat chips every single week?! 😳
Thats nor moderation!

Lightning020 · 24/08/2022 14:48

Our local one is so much quieter. We hardly go ourselves these days. Plus am watching my cholesterol.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 24/08/2022 14:53

Expensive around here now (SE). £25 for two people, and that's sharing the chips.

I now treat us to sainsbury's 'taste the difference' haddock with triple cooked chips, mushy peas, curry sauce ... less than £10.

mrsm43s · 24/08/2022 15:18

It's over £15 a head for medium fish and chips here, about £7+ for a kids sausage and chips. Link for prices just in case anyone (understandably) doesn't believe me deliveroo.co.uk/menu/reigate/reigate/sea-salt-fish-and-chips Medium portions are not big enough to share. It's surely too expensive for most families to have as anything other than an occasional treat. £40 - £60 for a family of 2 adults and two children (ours are teens, so it's 4 adult portions at £60 total for us). Dominoes/Pizza Hut is about £20-25 for 2 large pizzas delivered (always BOGOF offers on!), Chinese about £35-40 to feed 4, Indian similar. Kebabs with chips maybe £30 to feed 4. Maccy's we can feed 4 for £20.

TBH we could go for a midweek carvery, or eat out in chain pub for far less than it costs to get takeaway fish and chips, with soft drinks included and no washing up!

HoliMooli · 24/08/2022 15:21

This is the cost of fish and chips where I live. It’s utterly unaffordable for us now. On the rare occasion we feel like getting a takeaway, McDonalds is about all we can afford. Even that is only when they have the £5 or £10 off offers through the app
