What suddenly takes you back to your childhood?

What things suddenly remind you of your childhood?

For me, occasionally a warm and sunny day and hearing a particular birdsong which I think might be a song-thrush.

The smell of pure cotton being steam ironed.

EllieQ · 24/08/2022 11:24

Milk bottles clinking together as they’re put out on the doorstep. I’d hear my mum putting them out after I’d gone to bed. Started to get milk delivered in glass bottles now, and that noise took me right back.

The sound of far-away wood pigeons.

Wood pigeons in the countryside have a far gentler call (city pigeons need to be loud I guess).

Greensleeves · 24/08/2022 11:54

People losing control and shouting. Can't handle it.

Pinkjacket22 · 24/08/2022 11:56

Someone putting smarties in an eggcup and giving them to me (this almost never happens )
Listening to some songs - mostly dire straits and the human league and local hero
Lime marmalade

Blackcurrant jam. I first tasted it when I was three and in hospital and was given blackcurrant jam sandwiches one day. It was wonderful and I've loved it ever since.

A memorable one is lapsang tea. I first tried it about the age of nine when staying with posh friends of my parents. Didn't have it again until ten years later when someone gave me a packet and it took me straight back to being nine. Not quite like the Madeleine cakes, but similar.

TinyLittleBug · 24/08/2022 12:12

The smell of bbq’s and the sound of lawn mowers.
Both of these things I also associate with my Dad, who passed away 14 years ago. Lovely memories.

The smell of church halls (why do they all smell the same?!)

Boiled eggs and soldiers.

Libraries.

Bonfire Night.

This. No heating, no decent coat, gloves etc.

More cheerfully, the smell of new-cut privet hedges. 🙂

Dandelion and Burdock. It was a special treat when we went to stay with Grandparents.
