What things suddenly remind you of your childhood?

For me, occasionally a warm and sunny day and hearing a particular birdsong which I think might be a song-thrush.

The taste / feel of whippy ice cream in a wafer cone, when it has made the cone go a bit soggy. Takes me right back to summer holidays as a kid!

Muffled mono music, like my mum's old reel-to-reel tape recorder used to play.

PuppyMonkey · 24/08/2022 12:45

The smell of certain shops, mainly Heron Foods and the Co-op. They smell of the 1970s when I used to go shopping with my mum.

Panickingnow · 24/08/2022 13:04

Songs, smells.

Newly laid Tarmac
Humbug sweets
The smell of wax floor polish
Incense (midnight mass)

The heavenly perfume of night scented stock - I have the image of my late dad kneeling down on the garden path to smell it and telling me how it reminded him of his home. He left his homeland aged 17 because of war and was never able to back or to see any of his family again. So it’s a bittersweet memory.

A580Hojas · 24/08/2022 13:57

The smell of tomato plants in a hot green house.

I wish I could capture the smell of my Grandmother. She had the most wonderful fragrance of any human I have any encountered. Her whole house smelled of it. She didn't wear perfume, it was just her natural pheremones, maybe enhanced by green Fairy bath soap or the original palmolive. If I smelled it now I would be taken right back to her bungalow.

Dettol in the bath

Ribena - we were only allowed it at Granny's
Peanuts - we only had them at Christmas
Coke in a glass bottle with a packet of Skips, outside the the Windmill on Clapham Common, watching the crane flies on the fence, circa 1978
And one non-food/drink one - Ladybird books.
Oh - and a brand new geometry set from WHSmiths in September!

MissyB1 · 24/08/2022 14:20

Oh gosh yes Dettol baths! And fairy green soap!
My Dh was horrified when I told him
about Dettol baths 😁 he’s from the Southern Hemisphere and outs it down to “one of those weird Pom things” !

Handyweatherstation · 24/08/2022 15:20

I remember Dettol baths when I was in hospital as a small. I was appalled that the water was cloudy, which I thought was dirty, and kicked and screamed trying to avoid being put in.

Handyweatherstation · 24/08/2022 15:20

Creosote in summer, anyone?

The smell of camping. We camped a lot as children and I only managed to finally convince dh into camping holidays a few years ago as he'd never really done it. Unfortunately it doesn't smell quite the same as we have a modern tent and not a big, heavy canvas 1970s one but it still evokes some memories.
The smell of tinsel and the artificial Christmas tree.
