What suddenly takes you back to your childhood?

What things suddenly remind you of your childhood?

For me, occasionally a warm and sunny day and hearing a particular birdsong which I think might be a song-thrush.

Sadly every time I read/hear about the Rotherham abuse cases, or when children are terribly neglected and murdered and I think that could so have been me, I struggle to think of a happy memory :-(

I’m a bit like this - it is sad. However, DS11 (who is now in secondary and thinks he’s about 26) recently said to me that when he sees people with a frozen drink it reminds him of when he was in primary (last year 😂) because if they go on a summer school trip I always put their water bottles in the freezer!

I also love sharpening pencils and washing paint pots at work because it reminds me of quiet moments in primary school doing jobs in the cloakroom.

Isn't it? Smells are so evocative.

certain songs, TV theme tunes from the 80s. I was in a charity shop recently and spotted one of those pot chickens for keeping eggs in, they had one on the TV show bread that they used to all put money in. Well I had to buy it as it took me right back to my 80s childhood as we had one exactly the same.
Sunday roast dinner smell.

BuenaVistaAntisocialClub · 24/08/2022 23:03

The smell and taste of crinkle cut chips made by my mum in the deep fat fryer.

HarrietSchulenberg · 24/08/2022 23:42

Z Cars theme tune. When that came on, it meant it was past bedtime. Can remember being very young and sitting on the stairs, hearing Z Cars coming on in the living room and sniggering to myself because my parents were still talking and hadn't realised I was still up. I had my flanelette pyjamas on so I must have had a wash already.
Same for Coronation Street theme tune - when it finished I had to go to bed.

Tinkerblonde1 · 25/08/2022 00:06

The 999 theme tune.

GiveUsACoffee · 25/08/2022 00:17

Dunhill cigarettes. Walked into a shop one day where an elderly man must have just had one. Took me right back to bring with my grandfather

Daisychainsandglitter · 25/08/2022 03:46

I don't live in the same area anymore so don't smell it but the smell of sugar beet on an Autumn day always reminds me of being young.

mondaytosunday · 25/08/2022 04:25

Anything German - hearing it spoken or seeing a German item in a shop. I lived there through my childhood and teenage years.

Elderflower14 · 25/08/2022 08:58

Wright's Coal Tar Soap, Foxes Glacier Mints, Lime Marmalade.... Hearing Charlie Pride singing Did You Happen To See The Most Beautiful Girl In The World. Van Der Valk Theme music...
