What things suddenly remind you of your childhood?

For me, occasionally a warm and sunny day and hearing a particular birdsong which I think might be a song-thrush.

Sadly every time I read/hear about the Rotherham abuse cases, or when children are terribly neglected and murdered and I think that could so have been me, I struggle to think of a happy memory :-(

I had psoarsis (sp) on my scalp as a kid. Saturday nights (bath night) my mum would put betnovate on my scalp, wash my hair in polytar shampoo, then get all the scabby bits off my scalp with a nit comb. I hated it, it hurt when she went through my hair with the nit comb and I stank of poly tar until Wednesday.

it’s not often I smell polytar but when I do I’m transported back to Saturday nights in the 70s!

Eating egg mayonnaise sandwiches.

Most summers we would go on the 8am coach from Victoria Coach Station to Newcastle to visit my Grandmother. We would have set off on the first train of the day to travel across Kent. So we would have egg sandwiches for breakfast as the coach set off through London heading for The North. Oh the excitement!

The distinct tangy/smoky smell of a pub in the morning. You couldn't find it now If you tried as people aren't supposed to smoke indoors but all of my family has been involved in the trade and the smell of a Saturday and Sunday morning is so distinct. The smell of the stale booze in the drip trays, dirty carpet, ashtrays etc. Just thinking about it gives me goose bumps as e we were very rarely allowed in the bar as children but early Saturday and Sunday was different as all the adults needed to clear up ready for opening. So we would be sat with a packet of crisps and a drink and would watch the adults. We felt SO grown up. A friend of mine has a shed they smoke in with a bar/DJ equipment set up in it and occasionally after a party there is a faint whiff of it. BAM- I'm back to being 7.
