Are you addicted to Diet Coke like I am?

I drink a lot of Diet Coke. I am the first to admit that but it always seems that I am the only one!

I mean I know I can’t be because otherwise it wouldn’t be sold literally everywhere…

I’d say on average I drink 2 cans a day. Maybe that’s not loads but I have to restrict myself. Otherwise I could probably drink it by the litre daily, first thing in the morning and last thing at night.

Anyone else have a love for Diet Coke?

I drink a lot of diet coke have done for years - but when we had supply chain problems i could only get my hands on caffine free for several weeks and was perfectly fine with that.

This lead me to the conclusion i just prefer both the taste and the fizz, so it's just a preference rather than an actual reliance on the caffeine.

Rahrahrahrahannoyed · 24/08/2022 12:59

I love the stuff. It has to be ice cold though.

DeadButDelicious · 24/08/2022 13:01

I used to drink about 2 litres of proper coke a day. I was properly addicted to it. After 3 bouts of kidney stones I have firmly kicked the habit and I don't have it all. It's not worth that kind of pain. Just water for me these days!

I really hate anything fizzy...I find the sensation of the fizziness very uncomfortable. If I do drink anything fizzy I can only sip it slowly, I certainly couldn't gulp it down. It's a really unpleasant sensation to me.

What is with people on mumsnet who have this bizarrely narrow world view to the point they are literally amazed and baffled that anyone does or likes anything that they personally do not like.

I don’t like coffee. I’m not standing gawping in shock that other people like coffee.

I’m baffled as to my mind it’s a kids party drink. I had no idea there were adults treating it like crack.

Dalaidramailama · 24/08/2022 14:01

@RudsyFarmer

Well I bet your minds been blown today 😂. A kids party drink? Nar I’ve never gave too much fizzy pop to kids who are overstimulated and running around. My kids tend to get juice and water offered to them at parties. The reference to crack is a little extreme too 😂.

Dalaidramailama · 24/08/2022 14:06

@cam22

You can doubt it all you like. The insulin theory is just that a theory. An unproven one.

Stripsorspots · 24/08/2022 14:09

Diet Coke is the only one for me - I keep myself to about 2 cans a day, more than 4 and I get jittery, but better than drinking wine every day (maybe)

Comedycook · 24/08/2022 14:10

I'm really easy going about food but really strict about my DC and fizzy drinks. Never allowed them when they were younger. Ds is now 14...he dislikes them. In fact all his mates were teasing him as he went to McDonalds and asked for a milk with his meal! I was quite proud actually!

miserablecat · 24/08/2022 14:19

Yes I don't mind the caffeine free version and I'd buy that above any own brand versions. I don't even like coca cola light when on holiday (I'm not entirely sure what's different but to me it's not as nice)

ChuckItBucket · 24/08/2022 14:22

Cam22 · 24/08/2022 12:20

I can't believe people can drink so much fizzy drink. It’s mind boggling to think of the effect it must be having on your bodies and health. I can’t fathom how you can actually DRINK that much liquid. You must feel like bloated balloons. So so bad for you.

I drink tap water mainly. More than two mouthfuls of that stuff is too much for me. Small wonder people are obese.

Denying yourself something other people find delicious doesn’t make you any better than those people you know.

I hope you do drink things other than tap water because that sounds like a pretty joyless existence

Dalaidramailama · 24/08/2022 14:55

@Comedycook

My kids would prefer milk over fizzy drinks any day of the week. This is despite myself enjoying cans of Pepsi max. Never knew I should pat myself on the back for that lol 😂 .

My son is 13 and I’m proud of him for many many reasons. Picking milk over fizzy drinks really isn’t up there though I must admit.

What’s in it that’s so bad?

There was a long standing rumour during the 90s that the artificial sweetener (aspartame) inside Diet Coke was linked to brain tumours and other health issues. This has possibly been dispelled since then but apparently any type of sweetener tricks your brain into craving real sugar and you are more likely to overeat real sugary foods.

The only selling point of diet sodas is that they have the same sugary taste without calories and therefore significantly healthier. If they are truly safe, then surely all children's beverages should also be made with sweeteners as well? This however seems taboo so there must a reason they are not widely used.

Dalaidramailama · 24/08/2022 15:32

@User34352515

Just checked my kids no added sugar cordial and yep Aspartame is in there. I think you’ll find it’s very much widely used in drinks aimed at kids.

differentstrokes1 · 24/08/2022 15:36

Dont u worry about all the artificial sweeteners? and your teeth? mind you I smoke - probably worse

Dalaidramailama · 24/08/2022 15:43

@differentstrokes1

Well I’m in my 30s and I’ve never had a filling so no I don’t really worry about that. Mind you I don’t drink the full sugar stuff, but appreciate it is acidic. My dental hygiene is good though and I don’t drink wine or anything. I also have an extra chewing gum addiction which is apparently good for your teeth.

I don’t get too concerned about artificial sweeteners I’ve read a lot of research and it’s not something that worries me. I drink more tea in the winter.

You had no idea adults were drinking coca cola and thought it was for kids? Are you incredibly stupid? Or do you just live under a rock?

FinallyHere · 24/08/2022 16:05

If you can ever arrange to do a tour of a coke factory (bottling plant) absolutely do it. One look at the corrosion of pipes feeding into the plant from the syrup room will put you off ever touching the stuff ever again.

Oh, wait, you mean they don't do tours for the public? Wonder why that might be?

Thenightwemet16 · 24/08/2022 16:08

Pepsi Max, but also two cans a day. Also drink 2-3 litres of water a day. It is the caffeine (as I don't drink tea or coffee), but I do also like the taste.

Heatherjayne1972 · 24/08/2022 16:10

Just so you all know
the recommended amount of coke diet or otherwise is…

one can a week

(This is because it erodes your teeth dissolving them from the outside in and it leaches the calcium from your bones leading to osteoporosis)

I’ll leave that with you all

Could you be any more patronising?

Dalaidramailama · 24/08/2022 16:15

@Heatherjayne1972

Evidence?

Mid 30s been drinking the stuff for years and not even 1 filling.

As for the osteoporosis link I eat plenty of calcium and do weight baring exercises at the gym. No one is convincing me to stop to be honest.

I mean I’m rather boring because I hate alcohol, but I’m pretty sure that’s not good for your teeth, mind and god knows what else.

Dalaidramailama · 24/08/2022 16:17

@FinallyHere

Why would anybody want to do a coke factory tour? It’s not Willy Wonkas factory 😂. This place is a laugh a minute.

Heatherjayne1972 · 24/08/2022 16:21

Actually anything fizzy is bad for teeth even fizzy water.
it’s the carbonation process that brings the ph down making it fizzy/ acidic
coke has a ph of around 2 ish. Similar to battery acid
Water / milk are 6.5/7 ( ph scale is the acidity level -7 is neutral / less damaging the lower the number the acidic/ damaging the substance is )
plus fruit juice / sports drinks
are awful for teeth
