Are you addicted to Diet Coke like I am?

I drink a lot of Diet Coke. I am the first to admit that but it always seems that I am the only one!

I mean I know I can’t be because otherwise it wouldn’t be sold literally everywhere…

I’d say on average I drink 2 cans a day. Maybe that’s not loads but I have to restrict myself. Otherwise I could probably drink it by the litre daily, first thing in the morning and last thing at night.

Anyone else have a love for Diet Coke?

No, diet coke and other diet pop taste like battery acid. Aspartame and other artificial sweeteners give me migraines, so if I want pop I will have normal Coke/Pepsi. Love Dr Pepper too.

I once had a Greek (?) version of coke but it had stevia or something in which was ok!

MinorWomensWhiplash1 · 24/08/2022 10:57

Coke Zero. I only have one can a day if I’m in the office but it’s a free for all when I WFH, easily 4 cans, occasionally 5-6. I use it as a food replacement cos I am fat and constantly starving.

Greenkitten · 24/08/2022 11:08

I’m a month clean. I could easily drink 5-6 cans of Coke Zero a day. Easy. I would buy a multi pack for home- then buy cans out and about so family didn’t realise how much I drank. Then hide the cans. I would get a bit twitchy if I didn’t have a can waiting. I’d even drink it flat if i found a half drunk one in the house. I don’t like alcohol- but adored Coke Zero. I have terrible teeth and know I had to give it up. My 17 month old would desperately try to drink it out of my cans. Obviously I wouldn’t let her. That’s when I realised it had to stop! Also £4.10 for 10 cans! I couldn’t justify it. I wouldn’t buy the bigger packs as I didn’t want family seeing how much I really got through. I’ve moved on to water. Yes, it’s dull. I really wanted/ needed to quit though. I know there’s worse stuff to be addicted to- but I really feel it’s addictive/ habit forming. I dare not have even a taste atm. I know I’d be right back on it.

Is everyone’s teeth okay? The acid in that stuff must be knackering your enamel.

yonce · 24/08/2022 11:19

Me too 😬 Diet Coke, Diet Coke lime for a small thrill midday, an occasional Diet Coke cherry. Coke Zero when busy at work and slamming 10 cans a day as no caffeine 😂 I love it!

I've got a few family members who chug away at the fizzy drinks and they all have bad teeth. Fortunately for me one of them was an adult when I was a child. She had terrible teeth and my mum, rightly or wrongly, told me it was because of the fizzy drinks and that was enough to steer me away. I was an easily impressionable child - I also remember a news item about salt when I was about 7 years old and for years refused to add salt to anything. But I will say this, when I was a child one of my grandfather's used to take coke and add a scoop of vanilla icecream. The thought repulses me now, but that was a real treat at the time for some reason!

It’s a Coke float. It’s hardly repulsive, it’s a totally normal treat.

As for teeth - of course those drinking 5/6 cans a day should watch out for that because it will be having a terrible impact. But one can of Coke per day is within your normal sugar allowance if you’re eating a balanced and healthy diet otherwise. It’s like anything - moderation. Look how many cups of tea some people drink every day. Most things are bad for you if you overindulge.

Threebutterflies · 24/08/2022 11:31

Wow you all sound like addicts ! How have you got any teeth left ? That stuff must have something addictive in it 😮

mumda · 24/08/2022 11:32

I can see the headlines in the sun now.

"Mumsneters addicted to coke"

Sugaspunsista · 24/08/2022 11:33

I have been drinking diet coke... more than 6 cans a day every day for over 25 years ( used to be full sugar coke before that for about 10 years)

PMAmostofthetime · 24/08/2022 11:35

I was addicted I gave up and have not drank it for 3 months- I'm sleeping better I have more energy.

I substituted it for fanta or sprite to get the fizz but no caffeine. I then switched to Rubicon sparkly flavoured water ( tastes like a fizzy drink I hate sparkling water) now I drink water it squash and have lemonade as a treat once or twice a week. I've not given it up long enough to enjoy it now and again yet.

I was drinking 5 500ml bottles a day and then 2 litres at home 🙈 in the evening.

AuntieMarys · 24/08/2022 11:36

No. I hate fizzy drinks ( apart from tonic)

abovedecknotbelow · 24/08/2022 11:38

I used to drink 4 cans a day. Did a keto diet several years ago and had to cut it out, went completely cold turkey and now cannot tolerate the stuff.

Maybe once a week I'll have a can of normal coke.

Thatboymum · 24/08/2022 11:38

I think Diet Coke tastes like vodka and coke I don’t like it but have read somewhere that it’s worse for you than normal cola there’s something not good or addictive in it I believe I read a while ago

Chesneyhawkes1 · 24/08/2022 11:39

I'm addicted to Pepsi Max cherry 🍒

Dalaidramailama · 24/08/2022 11:40

I have around 4 cans of Pepsi max a day. Got to 33 with no ill effects and I’m not stopping anytime soon.

Dalaidramailama · 24/08/2022 11:41

@Threebutterflies

Well I’m 33, drink cans of Pepsi max a day and I’ve never had a filling.

Comedycook · 24/08/2022 11:42

I'm amazed so many people are like this. I've never enjoyed coke or any fizzy drinks. I'd only ever drink one if I was thirsty and there was no other choice. The idea of drinking a can of fizzy drink out of choice baffles me.

LizzieSiddal · 24/08/2022 11:43

I could be addicted to it as love it with ice and slice, however just one glass makes me so bloated I can’t drink it!

DiddlyDoris · 24/08/2022 11:43

Decaf Pepsi is my go to atm

Dalaidramailama · 24/08/2022 11:44

@Comedycook

Baffles you? Bizarre.

I don’t like coffee. Other people drinking coffee doesn’t baffle me though 😂.

Erm, people are different? It’s seriously not that mind boggling.

WilsonMilson · 24/08/2022 11:46

Used to drink a lot of Diet Coke, maybe 2 cans a day, Stopped drinking it entirely a couple of years ago as has started getting dizzy spells every day that I couldn’t figure out. Read somewhere online of someone else having dizzy spells and felt it was caused by aspartame in diet drinks. Decided to quit the Diet Coke and the dizziness completely went away - anecdotal, but there you go. Do miss the taste, but wouldn’t go back.

LadyDanburysHat · 24/08/2022 11:48

Another addict here. Try to stick to one can a day, but usually it's 2. I don't drink tea or coffee, and diet coke is my caffeine fix.

VaulterTech · 24/08/2022 11:51

🙋‍♀️ me too. Generally try and stay on caffeine free though. I also don’t drink tea or coffee so the Diet Coke is my ‘treat’ drink.

felineweird · 24/08/2022 11:52

I'm not overly keen on coke but I'm terrible for soft drinks generally. I only buy sugar free but Fanta, sprite, anything along those lines I'm terrible for
