Just discovered you can't say the name of place on Reddit that spends a lot of time talking about this website.

What other words cant we say?

OP posts:
picklemewalnuts · 23/08/2022 14:45

The new site?

You can't say the name of the forum. That's what I meant

Oh yeah I got you, I knew that’s what you meant. I’m just somewhat surprised

Yes lots of the things we want to talk about- women's rights, protecting women's spaces, safeguarding, how to recognise a potential sex offender are derailed by people conflating those concerns with an anti trans agenda. It's very tiresome.

Then there are the problems with an affirmation only approach to teenagers having an identity crisis. Wanting to discuss that seems to be phobic too.

Yes, it’s because there are a lot of mediocre men and their handmaidens who are genuinely upset at the thought of women discussing women’s matters and concerns without putting men’s needs first.

It leads to a stream of seagull posters, who turn up, squawk a lot, shit all over everything then leave.

dapsnotplimsolls · 23/08/2022 15:33

Scunthorpe.

Those comments are basically people stating they find drag queens offensive and explaining why. Nothing hateful, just reasoned opinions which you are welcome to agree or disagree with.

Someone responded they feel the same way about clowns. Should they be censored for being anti-clown?

You're saying you find the comments offensive. Why are you entitled to your offense but others are not?

Love this, perfect description Grin

A580Hojas · 23/08/2022 15:53

Now I'm confused. Is there a new site?

Ramble0n · 23/08/2022 15:57

Now I'm confused. Is there a new site?

I think they mean the upgrade.

lljkk · 23/08/2022 16:07

Lots of words that are commonly considered insulting or if used can only be intended to be specifically offensive according to race or disability status. So this is not a place to teach anyone what those words might be.

I really can't believe that poster doesn't get it.

Or maybe they do, and they are all for it? Confused

Fluffymule · 23/08/2022 16:46

"People are able to be a lot more hateful towards trans women specifically and drag queens than they would be on any other form of social media"

I don't agree with this, Mumsnet doesn't tolerate 'hate' towards individuals at all, but clearly posters can articulate and discuss their distaste or concerns about behaviours of any groups of people.

I think there are groups that do get out and out abuse on here - for example tons of posters state things about peoples political beliefs; 'Tory's are murdering scum', "Priti Patel makes me vomit', 'Brexiteers are selfish cunts' type of thing - you'd never see a post with that language stand if the words 'Tory', 'Priti', or 'Brexiteer' was swapped with 'Trans' for example.

I think the quote above can be edited to be more truthful and accurate of Mumsnet's position as follows; People are able to be a lot more supportive towards women's rights, specifically sex and safeguarding based rights, than they would be on any other form of social media.

babyjellyfish · 23/08/2022 17:13

Many on FWR often say this is the only site they can speak candidly about certain things

There is a reason they would be banned from most other forms of social media for half the posts put on that topic and AIBU.

Maybe those other forms of social media are wrong, and Mumsnet is right.

I find it incredibly Orwellian that women are effectively banned from making true statements about human biology and their own experience of the world on so many sites.

Fluffymule · 23/08/2022 17:31

"I find it incredibly Orwellian that women are effectively banned from making true statements about human biology and their own experience of the world on so many sites"

Exactly. How astounding, mind blowing, is it that a woman saying - 'I am a woman. A woman is an adult human female' - can be banned from any social media site. (Or can be reported to the police and them take the report seriously, but that's a taking the discussion much wider I guess).

Galvantula · 23/08/2022 19:01

Jeezo I thought my deleted post was quite polite as well.🙄

LaFemmeNicola · 23/08/2022 19:05

Hang on, is that right, that you can’t refer to a trans “woman” as “trans identifying” plus their sex?

Where is this heading? Are we not going to be able soon to say that someone with anorexia is thin?

I hope that post stays put, @Keepingupappearance, because I agree with every word and I wish we could talk about all of this in franker terms. It's very clear rom Twitter that many people, especially in the US, are still stuck at the point of thinking this is just a matter of being accepting of people who want to live their lives in a different way from the majority. It's far more complicated than that. The medical treatment involved is not good for anybody's physical health, no matter what it may (or may not) do for their mental health. This has just not been considered as a serious issue by HCPs and other professionals dealing with people with gender issues. In the UK and most other European countries the authorities are belatedly waking up to this. In North America they are still a way behind. I hope they are able to make the leap of seeing that this is not a party political issue and to start thinking about this critically, in the very near future.

Keepingupappearance · 23/08/2022 19:39

Yes. Well put.

Riverlee · 23/08/2022 21:44

I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many deleted posts in one thread! However, they’ve been deleted before I can read them, which makes the later comments difficult to follow.

Keepingupappearance · 23/08/2022 21:49

WOW deleted

first time in my life my free speech has ever been censored

and it was for saying quite factual statements in the interests of protecting the rights of womens and girls

mumsnet should be ashamed

trans identifying men aren’t women
