I had the best afternoon I’ve had in ages - sitting in Sainsburys carpark :)

I’m not sure what that says about me (that I’m a cheap date?!) But I really did.

My friend cancelled on me so I had a couple of spare hours. Decided to do a food shop but couldn’t face it when I got there, so just bought some water and some crisps, sat in the car and read my book.

I mean I probably won’t make it a regular thing but who knew Sainsburys carpark could give such joy!

I used to do this regularly when the dc were little. I'd fly round tesco as fast as possible then have a blissful half hour in the car with a cream cake and my book. I'd then go back home and have a mini rant about the long queues in the supermarket 😂

Can someone teach me how to drive, please? I'm missing out!! :-(

Justoneconfusedperson · 18/08/2022 19:05

oh I do this every week! Sometimes it’s the only me time I get! Just ten to fifteen minutes sitting chilling, cake from the bakery and a coffee or juice whilst I’m supposed to be doing the food shop. Heaven!

HarmlessPotato · 18/08/2022 19:08

I'm sat in my car right now at my destination, scrolling through mumsnet 😂

I regularly do this! It's brilliant! It helps that I have my kindle books on my phone. I'm not even picky - tesco, sainsbury, asda - any free supermarket car park works!

Ha ha ha, I get you. On Tuesday I took my car in for a repair early, I booked a day off work, and was home for 11. I put my PJs on, got a new book, got into bed with some crisps and a cup of tea, read 3/4 of the book, had a nap around 3, had some crackers for tea still. in bed and fell asleep again until morning at 8pm.

bloody awesome.

Not shopping but when we had a houseful of noisy teens DH & I would nip out for a KFC & park up at a local beauty spot to enjoy our food. Other people seemed to have the same idea (or so we thought) but found out a few weeks later it was actually one of the top dogging sites in our area! 😂🙈

Sounds fantastic, hope you enjoyed it

Hopefully you weren't there more than 2 hours? I think anything over that and you end up with a parking fine. Sainsbury's have a two hour max limit.

Three hours at ours

CountryMouse22 · 18/08/2022 19:56

When my Mum was very ill I used to drive down to Wickes in town in my lunch hour, park in a corner away from everyone and have a good cry.

blackheartsgirl · 18/08/2022 20:13

Sainsburys is 3 hours at ours too. Unless it’s match day and then it’s an hour and a half.

I do the eating lunch quite regularly, and I I quite often sneak off for a drive somewhere which just happens to end up at a costa or maccies. My kids don’t know. They’ve got really snarky (teens) in the past if I’ve admitted to a sneaky car munch and time to myself.

I've found my people.

I sometimes drive into Asda car park to eat a cheeky McDonald's cheeseburger. My secret and nobody needs to know.

Me too.do you think a taxi man’s eyes would raise if we simply said-”drive me to sainsburys…yep yep here’s fine now can we sit for 2 hours please.greatthanks.😁”

missg00se · 18/08/2022 21:06

Our local B&Q has a massive car park where you can park facing some nice trees and enjoy watching the birds - it's next to a drive through Costa, McDonald's, and KFC, so plenty of choice Grin My daughter would only nap in the car so I've spent a lot of time in that car park snoozing, bird watching and drinking coffee while she slept in the back. Not done it for ages.z Your car park break sounds like bliss.

nannykatherine · 18/08/2022 21:21

That was my weekly outing during lockdown 1
shopping trip
then an ice cream on the rooftop car park at sainsburys in the car with the sunroof open
was bliss

EthelMcUnready · 18/08/2022 21:28

Oh goodness, I've found my people 😅

FabFitFifties · 18/08/2022 21:50

No one has questioned why I take my book to ASDA on Sundays. I read before shopping so that nothing defrost.

melemone · 18/08/2022 21:51

Love all this making space for ourselves! I once tried to explain to blank expressions why, pre-pandemic, I had been reluctant to stop commuting by bus despite passing my driving test (apparently decompressing before nursery pickup and watching an episode of 'the crown' not acceptable to the office judgypants...) this blog does a better job of it, we are creating liminal space, people! harrietshortt.wordpress.com/2020/05/14/home-working-during-coronavirus-using-the-corners-of-our-homes-for-work-rest-and-play/

WotNoLoobrush · 18/08/2022 21:52

I'm in good company then! I've got so much more done on my phone, sitting in the car on my own. I rarely get the house to myself and it can be hard to concentrate.

Yes, be aware of any restrictions/cameras as I learnt the hard way and got a fineBlush

Think I've actually got FOMO for the first time in my life 😂

TimeToGoUpAGear · 18/08/2022 22:14

Not car related but pre covid the building next to my office was a library. I joined and used to escape there between meetings several times a week. I'd even take my work laptop sometimes. I was in heaven when I discovered they had a self serve coffee machine! The quiet was blissful.

Pegasushaswings · 19/08/2022 06:18

i started doing this after I dropped my DD off at nursery, the car park is a big field so I’d sit and read my book for 15 minutes peace! There’s something about being sat in a car rather than just on a bench somewhere.
