I had the best afternoon I’ve had in ages - sitting in Sainsburys carpark :)

I’m not sure what that says about me (that I’m a cheap date?!) But I really did.

My friend cancelled on me so I had a couple of spare hours. Decided to do a food shop but couldn’t face it when I got there, so just bought some water and some crisps, sat in the car and read my book.

I mean I probably won’t make it a regular thing but who knew Sainsburys carpark could give such joy!

Thanks for the heads up re parking times by the way. Hadn’t really thought about that.

Sometimes I just park on an empty side street (with no restrictions) for some alone time before going home to listen to my music or just people watching.

Ignore my dreadful sentence construction ^ I know it makes no sense, just too tired to word it properly...hopefully you know what I meant though.

I love my Sainsburys car park. There's a crescent bit , against a wall where the spaces are extra wide and there's a mature ivy hedge that's so beautiful at this time of year . Could easily spend a couple of hours there.

When my kids first came to us (adopted at 2&3), it was like I’d been hit by a truck, a mum to two small traumatised bundles of joy overnight. I used to ‘accidentally on purpose’ forget stuff from the shop. It gave me an excuse to get out of the house, take my mind off the weekly visits from both their social workers and ours…I used to take longer than I should…and the dog got way more walks than she was used to….her eyes when I said ‘walk’ said ‘seriously, not again!’.

We renovated our kitchen earlier this year and it was an absolute slog. I was often on tip run duties and it felt like a massive luxury cos I used to combine it with a 20 minute phone-and-McDonald’s fries stop nearby. I was in a much better mood when I got back so everyone benefited 😊

Doidontimmm · 17/08/2022 21:13

I ate 2 fresh cream strawberry tarts in Morrisons car park the other week…. I may do it again!

I read on another thread that a poster says to her family she's away to do the food shop but has actually done a click and collect so uses the extra time to sit in the car park with a coffee and book. Genius!

What a fabulous idea!!

Notfancyfree · 17/08/2022 21:20

I do that all the time. Also hour in Sainsburys today. Years ago I had a boyfriend and we used to park together. Sometimes we'd turn on the radio and drink take away tea and doughnuts and watch the world like a tv.

HelenaJustina · 17/08/2022 21:23

Haven’t done the supermarket car park, but on arriving home from work (7 minute commute by car down country lanes) I have been known to spend at least 20 minutes sitting in my car on the drive. Just unwinding before facing the house and 4DC.

waitingforthesun101 · 17/08/2022 21:29

I do this quite often also. Like the food shopper pp I used to go to a class one evening a week but stopped a while back and instead have been using the two hours to have a nosey in the shops and a coffee and book in the car.

I also frequent the Costa drive through with my book whilst the dc naps! Love it!!

whynotwhatknot · 17/08/2022 21:30

the click and collect shop is inspired

sounds good op

I think it is lovely to have the capacity to feel joy in things like this. This afternoon was torrential rain and a friend and I got totally soaked I mean literally through all our clothes completely sudden and sat outside a cafe just laughing our heads c off getting even wetter. Enjoying the mundane and the moment is the key to a happy life!

UnicornsDoExist · 17/08/2022 21:35

I love that. Regularly come home and sit in the car for ages looking around and enjoying the quiet. It’s a thing in my family, we all do it and my son has started it too, sometimes we sit in silence together 😆

RewildingAmbridge · 17/08/2022 21:36

I love doing this! Our Asda is no good entrance/exit both sides, fairly compact carpark so quite busy and no quiet spots, Tesco Extra huuuge carpark and some nice shady trees, my favourite though is to get a takeaway coffee, drive down to the seafront park up and read my book for an hour, overlooking the water. Spent many pleasant afternoons on mat leave doing this, after being out for the morning, when DS was in his I'll only sleep in a mode of transport phase. DH said once, why are there always books in the car, it's so weird... like no one would ever read in a car!

AgnestaVipers · 17/08/2022 21:36

This thread is giving me idears.

5128gap · 17/08/2022 21:42

Next time, why not really treat yourself...sit in the carpark at Waitrose!
I know, I know ..but honestly, you're worth it!

@Bladed no worries.

I also sometimes have purchased two custard slices or choux buns and ate them both!

ThereIsATInWater · 17/08/2022 21:45

I looked after my friends baby along with my own.
If I couldn't keep them awake whilst on the way home, I used to get a drive thru coffee or mds and park up and read.
First time I didn't have a boom, so stopped at home and nipped and got it!

Hours peace for all concerned .

puffylovett · 17/08/2022 21:47

Ooh this takes me back! I used to finish work at 8pm, go get fish and chips and read my book in the car for an hour.
when I had kids, this progressed to drive the kids around till asleep for a 2 hour nap, park up with a McDonald’s coffee and read.
i have also, on many an occasion, gone to do a late night shop leaving dp with the kids, and skim read a book in the Tesco book aisle while all my frozen stuff melts 😂

thenewduchessoflapland · 17/08/2022 21:55

I've been to a "absolutely packed Tesco, yes it took ages to get around and the check out queues were enormous and not enough checkouts were open" on more than one occasion.

It was dead and I've sat and enjoyed a still hot whilst I've drank it coffee,a slice of cake that I didn't have to share and a peaceful scroll through SM/MN.

Vecnasnurse · 17/08/2022 21:58

I'm a cleaner and I have several spots between jobs where I park up and eat lunch, mumsnet, drink coffee or just people watch. A few of the local residents have gotten curious and will curtain twitch or find a reason to be outside to give me the side eye 😁

Clevs · 17/08/2022 22:00

I used to love it when my toddler napped and fell asleep on the way home from places. I'd sit in the car on the drive till he woke up either napping myself or scrolling on my phone!

Oysterbabe · 17/08/2022 22:04

I once missed my train on purpose and then sat in the waiting room and read my book for half hour. Wonderful it was.
