Handbags - how many do you have and how often do you change to another one?

Wherearemyspex · 17/08/2022 11:05

I've been having a good sort out and have three bags full of stuff for my favourite charity shop. They contain clothes etc, but also 6 handbags I know I will never want to use again. This has cut my handbag "collection" down to 8 in total. Of these, I tend to use one more than the others but swap occasionally as the mood (and what I'm wearing) dictates.

I told my friend about my "large" handbag collection and she laughed ....... apparently she has around 30, doesn't think that's excessive and is always on the lookout for more to add to her collection! But she still has a couple of favourites she uses more than others.

Can anyone go higher than 30?

@crimsonlake My take on things is that living in Britain means we spend pretty much 8 months of each year in coats and boots, so that's where most of my spending goes!

None. I use pockets/hands.

😂

The 2 extremes of Mumsnet.

The first poster is desperate for everyone to know her list of designer bags, this one needs everyone to know that handbags are for mere mortals.

I used to be a massive handbag girl and had tons, used to obsess about what makes up the 'perfect bag', the psychology of women and bags, and buy books on historical handbag designs! Now I have about 12! I'm still looking for the perfect one though, don't think that search will ever end.

2 medium sized canvas 'hobo' style bags from La poet - 1 black for work, 1 beige for travel)
4 crossbody bags for some reason
1 leather tote from etsy
1 duffel bag from muji
4 rucksacks, don't know why I have so many, I hate rucksacks! 😂

I don’t understand how you can only need one. Clutch for a fancy dinner / sight seeing in a city / carry on for a flight / bike ride with family / work - all totally different sizes / requirements!

I agree with you on clutch but I have so much makeup that I just use a leather laptop sleeve (Senreve) with a gold chain as a clutch. Other than that I just have my convertible leather backpack for everything. Bike ride, country walks, office (fits laptop and Kindle), flight, day out, tube. It converts easily to a shoulder bag and crossbody bag and can be worn in the crook of the arm. I wish I could just have 1 pair of shoes but that works less well!

As with my quest for the perfect stylish-yet-comfortable-for-long-distance-walking sandals, I think that, the minute the quest is achieved, the Lady in the Lake appears to take Excalibur back, and that's you on your way to Avalon. Some quests are intended to take a lifetime 😉

I now have

Coach cross body bag
Fossil backpack
Ollie and Nic cross body bag for walking the dog

I gave everything else to charity because I just wasn't using them, I was in the habit of buying a clutch / evening bag to go with a specific outfit, never used them again. If I go to a 'big' event I'll buy something new but hopefully something that will go with everything. All my friends are married now, and work evening events are still off the cards so I can't see me needing anything else for the foreseeable!

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 17/08/2022 19:52

Half of them are worth between £300 and £600, a quarter between £600 and £3,000, and a quarter all over £3000, (about a dozen of that last quarter were over £20,000.)

@WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps

Is this what you invest in?

Whatwouldnanado · 17/08/2022 20:27

Navy Pilage for travel is the only vaguely posh bag I own. Colour, size and being leather matter
more than the label. They have to have soft leather straps too, can't bear anything that digs in.
Navy, tan, chocolate Fat Face medium squishy ones and a forest green one bought in Italy for every day
A Kipling rucksack which I use if we go for a picnic walk.
Monsoon beaded evening bags in coffee and black.
Little leather ones just big enough for phone lipstick card and a hanky in aqua, navy and tan.
They are all quite old but I take care of them with clear shoe polish.

Wow! Aren't you paranoid about something happening to the expensive ones? Don't you ever have a pen leak, or a lipstick break free, inside your bags?

Genuine question - definitely not judging! I want to know how it's done.

petshopboys · 17/08/2022 20:33

I've got two that I use - a plain black Principles one, and then one I got from the garden centre which is half navy and half cream. I use one until I get fed up of it and then switch to the other. I have about 5 cheap smaller ones, but they're too small to be practical, so just take up space in the bottom of my wardrobe as I can't bring myself to get rid!

No, I don't care. If an expensive bag gets wrecked, I will just buy a new one to replace it.

TattiePants · 17/08/2022 20:39

It’s a thread about handbags so surely people are interested in the types of bags and/or the brand. I probably have about 20 now. I used to have double that but I sold lots of them when I started working from home 9 years ago. I’ve been using the same Coach bag every day for probably 6 weeks. I really need to start using some of my more expensive bags or sell them as it’s such a waste leaving them in a cupboard in their dust bags.

TattiePants · 17/08/2022 20:43

MyNameIsAngelicaSchuyler · 17/08/2022 15:11

Probably 15-20. Most designer, I like to splurge on bags as I live in casual clothes and they really make a difference to how put together I feel

I tend to buy one, use for a year or two then buy another occasionally rotating backwards through my collection! My first designer bag was a mulberry Elgin in 2003, it all went downhill from there 🤣

@MyNameIsAngelicaSchuyler I stalked a woman round the Natural History Museum to get a closer look at her bag, it was a Mulberry Elgin and then managed to track down a barely used one. I’ve hardly used it and it’s still immaculate. I think I need to get it out and use it.

Adversity · 17/08/2022 21:26

A small rucksack
A black leather bag
A grey leather bag
A satin clutch
A natural straw clutch
A woven Japanese paper messenger bag, it’s really beautiful but only for sunny days
A bike pannier, I mean it is a bag

honeyfox · 17/08/2022 21:42

I love bags, I have about 20-30 if you include luggage and all types. Two or three were about 250 euro, that's as expensive as I would go and from relatively unknown brands. A lot are crossbody as that's what I prefer.

@Cheesywholemealbread @tootiredforanything
@Sellie555

I just bloody KNEW someone would pull me up on that but there's no need to be quite so snide, I would hope.

It seemed marginally more of an interesting read than if I'd listed three black, two blue and so on. It was as much for my own entertainment as anything else.

I’m glad you have such detail. we’ve enjoyed googling what some of them look like! 🤷‍♀️

Oh wow! Do you mind me asking which ones are in the top category? I'm imagining a Himalayan birkin 😍 I love handbags especially rare ones x

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 12/04/2023 12:57

RagzRebooted · 17/08/2022 12:23

2 or 3, probably. I tend to use one at a time and replace when it needs it. I have my normal day to day bag, a going out bag and probably a spare bag in the wardrobe somewhere.

I am not a handbag person, clearly.

Same! And I couldn't be bothered with the faff of transferring stuff over every day - I'd probably leave out something vital!

AlltheFs · 12/04/2023 13:01

None. I ditched them all a few years ago. I just take a laptop bag to work (a nice one that has pockets for other things)

If I have any weddings in future I’ll buy a clutch or something but I don’t really go anywhere without pockets or DD’s nappy bag!

Lorrymum · 12/04/2023 13:08

I have a few nice bags but I can't be bothered moving my handbag contents from one to another.
