Handbags - how many do you have and how often do you change to another one?

I've been having a good sort out and have three bags full of stuff for my favourite charity shop. They contain clothes etc, but also 6 handbags I know I will never want to use again. This has cut my handbag "collection" down to 8 in total. Of these, I tend to use one more than the others but swap occasionally as the mood (and what I'm wearing) dictates.

I told my friend about my "large" handbag collection and she laughed ....... apparently she has around 30, doesn't think that's excessive and is always on the lookout for more to add to her collection! But she still has a couple of favourites she uses more than others.

Can anyone go higher than 30?

@Kite22 hmmmm, hadn't considered it like that Blush
There are about 40 evening type bags so about two year for them to resurface! Still end up going back to the favourites though 😂

Bluevelvetsofa · 17/08/2022 13:10

DaisyWaldron · 17/08/2022 13:12

3, planning on buying another 2 and I'm all set.

AKnitterofThings · 17/08/2022 13:17

Three, a Cath Kidston purple spotty everyday bag, a small charity shop black Next bag for weddings and funerals and a brown Sainsburys large tote bag that holds my diary and an A4 file for meetings etc.

Cheesywholemealbread · 17/08/2022 13:18

@tootiredforanything my thoughts exactly 🤣

Ted27 · 17/08/2022 13:22

Probably over 40, none of them 'designer'

I have about 5 which I use a lot everyday but depending what I'm doing and whether I need a small or large bag, what I'm doing can use more in a week.
I love my bags - a few from high street shops such as next for work bags but most come from craft markets or vintage shops. I have about a dozen from various parts of Africa. I bought one made from 1970s curtains at a vintage shop last week so many of mine are unique

Over 70

Bloody hell - where on earth do you find room to store them all ?
Very few here as a) CBA to keep changing where I keep my essential stuff b) space c) better things to spend my money on.
Now, books😌

yonce · 17/08/2022 13:24

Probably about 20 😂 I use some for work, some for shopping, some for holiday, some for going out for walks etc. They all serve different purposes and are all very different styles! Some designer, some cheap and cheerful. I tend to swap depending on what activity I'm doing, I clear out occasionally and pop my older ones off to family / friends.

tootiredforanything · 17/08/2022 12:35

So the answer was 18.

Not quite sure why you had to mention the brands!

@tootiredforanything we all know why 🤣

Blackdiame · 17/08/2022 13:28

None in the traditional sense of a handbag. I use pockets or a cotton tote shopping bag if I'm carrying a bit more stuff but I try not carry too much shit around. I have a collection of backpacks tho. 2 big camping backpacks, a mid size day pack, 1 running pack and a bumbag. Slightly more formal leather backpack for work.

HandbagsnGladrags · 17/08/2022 13:28

Ooh my favourite subject! Not as many as I used to have as I have downsized my collection, but probably too many. All designer and yes I'm going to namedrop as well otherwise a handbag thread would be no fun at all.

1 large LV for work
1 medium sized LV
2 LV evening bags in different colours
2 Mulberry cross bodies for daytime
2 Mulberry Lilys in different colours
1 Coach cross body

9 in total...not too bad.

Wherearemyspex · 17/08/2022 12:58

Wow ... 70? I thought 30 was a lot.

My friend with 30 actually has soft, fleece over bags to keep them in, which essentially means she can't tell which is which when she opens the cupboard they live in..

Also, never heard of a handbag organiser make swapping easier. Great idea. (Goes off to look for one Smile)

A lot of mine are in dust bags but I still have a vague idea which ones are which due to how they're stored. I also use an organiser App to keep track of them so if I was thinking about buying a new bag, say a small black clutch, then I'd look at my App first to double-check if I already have a small black clutch.

I'm not a label snob, some of them were very inexpensive, but I do like having different bags for different occasions.

Sgtmajormummy · 17/08/2022 13:30

I really like the Reisenthel brand, so if I need a sports/shopping/tote/beach/lunch/soap/makeup bag I start by looking there. My daily bag is a Reisenthel laptop rucksack as I need hands free for DDog.

But for proper handbags, I have two leather cross body saddle-bag style by The Bridge, one Bordeaux colour from the 1970s and one more recent in brown. They are eternal but look to be coming back into fashion this winter.

And I have a more ladylike Coccinelle handbag that can be worn crossbody but also in the crook of your elbow.

So that’s 3 +1 rucksack.

They all have tissues, pen, mask holder, folding shopper and poop bags(!) and I just move my keys-phone-purse between them.

Barbequebeans64 · 17/08/2022 13:31

One bag 🙈

overitall1 · 17/08/2022 13:31

I have 2 - a small black one for 'posh' events ( funerals etc) and a big over the shoulder one used daily. I have no comprehension of why you would keep chopping and changing bags. It's weird... oh and all my friends are pretty much the same as me. Confused

YanTanTetheraPetheraPimp · 17/08/2022 13:32

Probably about a dozen handbags, several totes and one beach bag - far too many but I’ve had them for years. I did rehome about a dozen earlier this year.
Most are leather, classic designs but definitely not designer, practical and changed around occasionally.
When I worked I would probably swop bags every 1-2 weeks.

NiqueNique · 17/08/2022 13:54

I used to have a lot (imo), sixty or so I think? Ranging from high street to higher end high street to designer. Back then I used to change them out often - every few days according to my mood. Now I have ten or twelve I think, and I tend to change them by seasons and then switch out every so often. One or two of them are all year-round bags, and then one or two for going out/evenings. Recently sold a beautiful little Mulberry bag that I’d never even had the chance to wear because I just don’t go out enough anymore. Sad times.

KyaClark · 17/08/2022 14:02

A large black one that I used for work. Not used since I last went into the office pre-pandemic.

A small brown one I use most days.

A small cream one.

A small clutch that I use on nights out.

I also have a few other clutches that I never use anymore.

bitchwitch · 17/08/2022 14:04

none

NiqueNique · 17/08/2022 14:06

As for type of bag, this is what I have left:

Black oversized hobo
Taupe tote
Tan crossbody
Olive crossbody
Oxblood structured, top handle
Burgundy small satchel
Black small satchel
Tan small bucket, top handle
Peach/coral Bucket, drawstring
Basket tote

I need...well, would like to get...one (cheaper) shoulder evening bag as I don’t have one now I’ve sold the Mulberry, but I’ll wait until there’s an occasion where I actually need it. Also a clutch, but again I'm going to wait. And then I would love a very small, structured top handle bag too. Also want a tan tote, and another basket bag.

MarthaMayWhovier · 17/08/2022 14:07

3 handbags - a (faux) furry one, a neon pink one and one that looks like a bookshelf with book titles on it. I don't have any "grown up" or "ladylike" handbags.

NiqueNique · 17/08/2022 14:08

Oh I forgot two! I knew I had a couple more...

Cath Kidston big carry all which makes a brilliant travel/weekend bag. Dark blue background with flowers and birds.
Cheapy non-leather tote that I used to use for work. Burgundy.

Also forgot, I’m going to get a Le Pliage one of these days as well.

mindutopia · 17/08/2022 14:12

I have 1. You might stretch it to 3 if you include the changing bag (which is leather and doesn't look like a changing bag) that I sometimes use if the day calls for a 'big bag' and a rucksack that I use for days out. 🤔
