Handbags - how many do you have and how often do you change to another one?

I've been having a good sort out and have three bags full of stuff for my favourite charity shop. They contain clothes etc, but also 6 handbags I know I will never want to use again. This has cut my handbag "collection" down to 8 in total. Of these, I tend to use one more than the others but swap occasionally as the mood (and what I'm wearing) dictates.

I told my friend about my "large" handbag collection and she laughed ....... apparently she has around 30, doesn't think that's excessive and is always on the lookout for more to add to her collection! But she still has a couple of favourites she uses more than others.

Can anyone go higher than 30?

2
1 for "normal" use and a smarter 1 for "occasions".

I just bloody KNEW someone would pull me up on that but there's no need to be quite so snide, I would hope.

It seemed marginally more of an interesting read than if I'd listed three black, two blue and so on. It was as much for my own entertainment as anything else.

mondaytosunday · 17/08/2022 14:42

I probably have two or three but only use one at any given time, and since covid try and get away with just my phone and keys and no bag (I'm diabetic so need my medication if I eat which requires a bag).
It's a fake leather but very nice looking one off some online shop.

Generally handbag-monogamous day in day out, with occasional evening flings with a more frivolous number.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 17/08/2022 14:47

I've got:
Big Longchamp
Baby Longchamp
2 Kipling totes
Fossil tan handbag
Fossil small black handbag
Jigsaw red handbag
A red vintage beaded clutch
Brown leather clutch
Pink Gucci

I use the top 2 pretty much all of the time and the others occasionally.

Well, I think it's interesting to see the brands listed.

Three - one extra large one, one small cross body and one beautiful clutch. All three are very good quality.

MidnightMeltdown · 17/08/2022 14:58

I think about 14

2 x evening bags in different colours
2 x work bags in different colours
3 x small everyday bags in different colours
5 x medium everyday bags in different colours
2 x large totes mostly used for travel or occasionally work

I thought that this was quite a modest collection. I don't know how people cope with less than this. I hate it when my bag doesn't go with my outfit, or is the wrong size for my need. I change bag all the time depending on what I'm wearing and how much I want to carry.

MyNameIsAngelicaSchuyler · 17/08/2022 15:11

Probably 15-20. Most designer, I like to splurge on bags as I live in casual clothes and they really make a difference to how put together I feel

I tend to buy one, use for a year or two then buy another occasionally rotating backwards through my collection! My first designer bag was a mulberry Elgin in 2003, it all went downhill from there 🤣

RayneDance · 17/08/2022 15:29

Two in day to day use, one for work and day grunt work and a slightly nicer leather one for going out.
I find it challenging enough to remember to take bank card, hand wipes etc out of those without adding more to the mix!

150 +
Range from throw over shoulder cheap and cheerful to a Salvatore Ferragamo via many Lulu Guinness, Tiffany & Co and Coach.
I collect handbags and go for ones that interest me rather than the name necessarily- I have a 1940's lucite clutch made from the melted windscreens of B52 bombers and some leather bags from the 1930's.
I'm lucky enough that if I see a bag that excites me I can normally afford to buy it. I do change bags most weeks so they do get used.

Oooooooommmmmmmmmgggggggggg
I have bag envy Grin

Dobbysgotthesocks · 17/08/2022 15:36

Thanks for this thread OP. I was feeling very extravagant yesterday having bought two new bags in the past week. Bringing my total to 5!

1 backpack
2 canvas bags
1 faux leather smart(ish) bag
1 occasion bag

I now feel much better 🤣

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 17/08/2022 15:39

Are we counting backpacks? In that case, I need to add a Sweaty Betty one and a Kipling one.

I really need to see a picture of this!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 17/08/2022 15:39

Also, I've just remembered a little plaid one and a tiny silk one.

Picklypickles · 17/08/2022 15:41

I have one and I've had it for almost 20 years now, it's a beautiful unique hand-made leather handbag with little toadstools and critters carved into it. I've never yet found any bag that's anywhere near as gorgeous!

I also have 2 backpacks (1 big and 1 small) for days out with the children!

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 17/08/2022 15:44

10ish but acquired over many years. Nothing more expensive than Mimi Berry/Coach/Osprey. I can't be trusted with nice bags because I abuse them mercilessly, over-fill them, leave wet swimming clothes the bottom of them etc 😳

Babdoc · 17/08/2022 15:47

I have pockets in my coat, so I don’t need one. Prefer to have my hands free, rather than carry luggage.

Cross-body bag always, regardless of whether they're in fashion! I also can't be trusted with any bag I need to hold, as I invariably leave it on the Tube/bus.

PinkCupYellowCup · 17/08/2022 15:53

Why so many? I hate having unnecessary items in my house and I could never be bothered to have to keep moving my stuff from one bag to another. I have precisely one handbag but most of the time I just have my wallet in my pocket.

TheStarsDontShine · 17/08/2022 15:55

None I just take a phone for payment if needed which lives in my pocket

BiggerBoat1 · 17/08/2022 15:58

2
A backpack for everyday and a naice leather handbag my husband bought me about ten years ago that I use if I'm going out.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 17/08/2022 15:58

Other than my purse, I don't move stuff from one bag to another. I have a mini handcream, lipstick, lip balm, headache tablets and mini deodorant in each of my two 'main' bags. If I'm using any of the others, I generally only need my purse, phone and lipstick anyway.

I concur. It’s more interesting to see the brands and how people use them.

TooManyPJs · 17/08/2022 16:01

Where do you keep that number of bags? I only have a few bags and not many shoes but I still can't find anywhere to keep my latest sandals I've just bought.

People have already explained.

Sometimes when I go out, I want to carry more stuff - so I need a bigger bag. Sometimes that includes a water bottle, an umbrella, sun cream etc which wouldn't fit in a smaller bag.
Sometimes I am going somewhere "posh" and want my bag to look smarter (in the same way I wear different cloths and wear different shoes for a wedding from what I do when I am shopping).
Sometimes I am in a crowd and am more comfortable with something tucked right under my arm or maybe a cross body bag that is less easy to snatch.
Sometimes it is useful to have 'compartments' when you are using a bigger bag but want to keep something separate.

I am perfectly able to understand why someone is happy to just use one bag all the time. I also understand there are people who never use a handbag. I am not sure why it is so difficult for you and the pp who posted the same, to understand that others might be different from you.
