Why have my lips gone blue?!

And no it's not food colouring!
Just got up, walked past a mirror and did a double take and my lips have a very definite blue tinge Confused

Are any of the things you’re CEV for heart or lung conditions?

Squiff70 · 10/08/2022 21:54

PeloAddict · 10/08/2022 21:49

I'm CEV, 5 vaccines in and eligible so I have to ring if I get a positive LFT
Actually roasting but it's been really warm today so that's not unusual!

I'm also CEV and 9 months pregnant. This time 2 weeks ago I was in high dependency after testing positive for Covid. They also discovered I had a chest infection. Sats 90% on 2 litres of oxygen, respiration rate 33 (shouldn't be over 17), high temp, blah blah. I'm triple vaccinated and was seriously ill. I was given 5L oxygen, IV antibiotics (for the chest infection, NOT the Covid), IV fluids and loads of monitoring. Also had to have steroid injections to help mature the baby's lungs in case they had to deliver in an emergency but thankfully it wasn't needed. At no point was I given anti-virals.

3luckystars · 10/08/2022 21:55

Just to reassure you, my friend gets similar to this, there is a name of it and she gets it regularly and it is nothing to worry about (for her) she is a nurse also.

Im not saying that is what you have, just that it’s not always something serious. I know I would absolutely freak out if it happened to me and I would want to read a post like this.

in summary, try not to worry and ask the doctor!

LaughandGiggle · 10/08/2022 21:56

My child had blue lips when they had COVID.

No, a blood disorder. Neutropenic. I have bloods done every 12 weeks for everything from iron to neutrophil count

To add i wasn't saying I WILL get anti virals, just that if it is covid I do have to ring about it as I'm eligible

@Supersimkin2 .

Who's scaremongering I'm not some kind of weirdo who gets off on scaring people. Carbon Monoxide can cause blue lips that's a fact not my "scaremongering" opinion!

3luckystars · 10/08/2022 22:00

I think it’s called Reynauds but will check with her.

dizzydizzydizzy · 10/08/2022 22:01

Phone 111 OP.

FindingMeno · 10/08/2022 22:02

I had blue lips with covid.
I think you should ring 111.

Namenic · 10/08/2022 22:03

Since you are CEV, I’d try and get some medical advice - get checked out (they may be able to detect infection early - so can stop it getting worse)

VaccineSticker · 10/08/2022 22:12

Hope you’re on the phone with a doctor now considering your medical condition. Get well soon x

Junobug · 10/08/2022 22:18

My lips turn blue very frequently, as do my daughters. I'm pretty sure we both have Raynauds, which is as common as hayfever. Do you get cold hands?

Carbon monoxide typically doesn’t cause blue lips. The text-book description is of cherry red skin and lips in severe poisoning.

Greybeardy · 10/08/2022 23:20

RockinHorseShite · 10/08/2022 21:43

Could you be anaemic?

That lowers your bodies ability to carry oxygen around in your blood, so can cause low oxygen symptoms like this

cyanosis is more difficult to detect in anaemia (because it relates to the amount of de-oxygenated haemoglobin and in anaemia there is less haemoglobin so proportionally more of it needs to be deoxygenated before it becomes obvious).

InRoseBlush · 10/08/2022 23:35

If you've got a cold it might be to do with that. About 5 years ago I had a really bad cold and my lips went like that for a short period. I still lived at home then and my mum had got me out of bed to try and eat something so I don't know if forcing myself to get up and move around affected my oxygen levels or something. It went away after an hour or so.

PeloAddict · 10/08/2022 23:52

111 didn't seem concerned, just the usual if you start having problems breathing/keel over then ring back/ring 999

cutmyteethandbitmytongue · 10/08/2022 23:56

Have you eaten enough today? I get blue lips if I forget to eat, especially if I'm also cold.

Hollyhobbi · 10/08/2022 23:57

Ex nurse here. Please phone the 111 number. I wish we had something similar in Ireland.

WinterMusings · 10/08/2022 23:58

Morechocmorechoc · 10/08/2022 21:51

Looks like love oxygen. I'd imagine it will pass as looks minor. I've seen proper blue lips that you need nhs for. That is not them!

That's a very risky post.

op is CEV, it's an online photo (colours can be deceptive).

@PeloAddict you need to get your oxygen Sat tested. I presume being CEV you have an oximeter?

Weaselstoatferret · 10/08/2022 23:59

Do you have lip fillers? They can make your lips have a blue tinge.

No fillers
@WinterMusings no, no o2 monitor
111 asked loads of questions and seemed quite happy I was ok

MN is not an NHS service.

abovedecknotbelow · 11/08/2022 00:21

I wouldn't be happy with that and would present at a and e, unless you need a massive burp. Dts lips would go blue as babies when they needed to burp.

I'd be concerned about low O2 SATS and
heart conditions.

I am not a medic.

LemonySippet · 11/08/2022 00:28

You can get a home oximeter from amazon OP, they're not very pricey and give peace of mind for situations like this. DH is CEV too and it's made the last couple of years much easier to cope with.
