Has anyone ordered a new car recently?

I ordered a new car (Ford Fiesta) through motorfinity (Blue Light Card discount) back in March and still don't have a build date due to the availability of parts and semiconductor chips etc. Has anyone else ordered a new car and what was the timescale? Beginning to get impatient!

Yup. Ordered our Motability car 1st December 2021. Expected March 22, then July, then September. Now maybe October but they won’t start building it without all parts available.

sanityisamyth · 08/08/2022 19:16

Oh that would do my head in @Sidge. How are you coping?!

Ordered May 21, arrived July 22, back for repairs (serious warning lights) within 2 days. Later found out that was the 2nd repair.

No penalties to cancel the Ford as they hadn't met their dates and they were desperate for the car so I assume they shifted it quickly!

momtoboys · 08/08/2022 19:20

I haven't ordered one lately but have been extensively looking online. Prices are ridiculous. A car I looked at a year ago at $38,000 US $ is now $45, 000.

Sidge · 08/08/2022 19:23

@sanityisamyth luckily we just keep our current Motability lease car until the new one is available. We literally couldn’t cope without a car!

Pyewhacket · 08/08/2022 19:26

I looked at it because my Land Rover wasn't compliant with the London ULEZ. New Land Rover Defender, £58, 000 and 9-12 months. Replaced the engine in my Landie instead, well my husband did.

That's not too bad then. Getting very confused as to know what to do!

Ordered EV in Feb, current ETA is October.

Just in time for the next energy price increases Grin

Although actually, I think if it does arrive in October, I'll eat my hat!

Oh that's nooooot good. Not surprising if there's such a massive delay. They must be under so much pressure to make them quickly.

Excellent! This is what I'm thinking. The dealer at motorfinity did say he'd be able to resell the one I'd ordered without a problem 🤞

Yeah they've definitely gone up in price. It's really worrying!

Saves buying food as that's gone up too! 🤣

Clever husband! It helps having people around who know what they're doing.

Why do people wait for new cars and not just get a second hand one? Even with the price increase they must still be marginally cheaper?

Wombat27A · 08/08/2022 19:38

I hang out on the T6 Forum, whis is VW vans & there's a massive thread on there & on the California forum, all about delays.

It's 12+ months to get a van currently. Depending on what bits are missing in stock.

TwinklingFairyLightz · 08/08/2022 19:40

Wasn't there a fire at the big semi conductor factory in China. By big, think as big as a city and responsible for making 30% of global semi conductors. I'm sure I read that somewhere.

Safer
More reliable
Warranty
Known history
Better fuel efficiency
More technology

Etc

I had my last car from new and had her for 10 years before she was written off (not my fault). I will keep another new one until it dies so I don't really care about the depreciation.

Oh that's really worrying. I hadn't heard that but wouldn't surprise me. News from China often doesn't get out.

Reading this I was extremely lucky I ordered a new Kia end of January 2022 think it was the 28th picked the model, spec, colour etc and it was ready for collection by mid March 2022. I knew there was a delay but the timelines on this threat are bonkers.

Wow! Maybe Kia is the way to go! Yeah I'm getting fed up with it.

Maybe order a non-standard paint colour. My DH ordered an electric Audi last October with a 4 month lead time. They added 3 weeks to that estimate every week until he gave up and cancelled (estimate was over a year from ordering at that point). He went to test drive a Tesla and the guys in the showroom told him to order anything except white and it would be 7 weeks. Being a geek, he joined a Tesla Facebook group where he learned people waiting for white were getting estimates of 6 months. Apparently they do colours in batches and will make X amount of each colour until the paint is used up then move to the next colour. A popular or free colour means a longer waiting time.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 08/08/2022 20:20

Ordered an Octavia 2 weeks ago.
Been told 12-18 months, also Ukraine issues.
DH ordered a new VW Transporter 2 years ago. Was told 2 years. Now being told 18 months.

Ohhhh that's interesting. I went for big standard red (was free!) so maybe if I'd done something more expensive that would have helped!
