What things horrify and fascinate you at the same time?

I'm petrified of oceans and seas - deep waters in general. But I'm also completely obsessed with it too; I'll watch anything to do with marine life, oceans, sharks (😱) even though it scares the shit out of me. I live on the coast and love it, but jeez-oh it scares me.

What about you?

@BiscuitLover3678 the missing 411 are a group of disappearances in Americas national parks that no one can explain. The stories are incredibly sad. There are books and documentaries and Mr Ballen on YouTube has covered a couple of the stories from it.

Skin walkers are Navajo in origin. They're believed to be harmful witches who can possess or transform into different animals and people to fool unsuspecting victims.

I can’t remember how I discovered you could do this but years ago I found websites like this: www.tdcj.texas.gov/death_row/dr_executed_offenders.html

where you can read through peoples final statements before they get executed. I have only done it a couple of times but it’s weirdly addictive but also so horrifying at the same time.

eurochick · 07/08/2022 07:44

Surgery. Cutting into the flesh of living people. It absolutely horrifies me. But didn't stop me watching multiple videos of c sections before mine. 🤦🏼‍♀️

PseudonymPolly · 07/08/2022 10:23

@ArrangeYourFace1 so morbid but I can't stop reading the final statements.

Lots of men that found God and religious references, lots apologising to their victims, their family, their mum.

The ones that give me chills though are the ones whose final statement is protesting their innocence. A couple are very believable. Of course they might just be psychopaths and sticking to their story but it does make you wonder.

Well I've fallen down a bit of a rabbit hole with this now!

@loopycurtains have you seen the film The Descent? Thinks there is Descent 2 as well

Oh god, I've just googled it. I really really don't want to watch it. And now probably will. Thanks! 😂

Gosh yes, thought of pylons straightaway.
Even the word gives me shivers, I've always felt weird about them. We used to live very close to one when I was young & I still remember it hissing in wet weather.
I'd still have to really challenge myself to stand under one & don't think I could look up.

Beware of the hissing Plyons
(They’re coming for you and they will get you. No where is safe.
They know where you live and will knock your window
How about that for a terrifying movie.
I”ll shut up, shall I 😂

I'm currently coming home from a week in France and while I'm not driving I am spending all my time reading about the Nutty Putty Cave. It's 1 of the most scary things I've ever read but I can't stop. 😳

Chesneyhawkes1 · 07/08/2022 16:13

@PseudonymPolly looking at all those names you have to think, at least one on there could have been innocent.

My cancer. I have it and it terrifies me at times but also fascinated by the research, different types of chemo, side effect of drugs, radiotherapy and want to know everything.

WinnysPinny · 07/08/2022 16:24

Oscar Pistorious - I have watched every documentary on him and watched the entire trial - I am obsessed

HRTQueen · 07/08/2022 16:40

Wild animal attacks. I find wolves especially fascinating they are so aloof there have been few attacks when compared to bears, crocs, sharks but the fear of wolves is written into many cultures

serial killers

outlaws how they become hero’s fascinating podcast I’m listening to at the moment how we romanticise them is really interesting

Folklore

the outback I love books set in the outback the vastness is uncomfortable

the open sea (I won’t go on a cruise)

Yep, for me, it's the fact that he was stuck upside down which, for some reason, multiplies the horror a hundred-fold.

Gsds · 07/08/2022 16:47

Similar to op, the sea, but watch videos of surfers surfing 100ft waves, and even documentaries. Absolutely terrifying

And thought he was entering a tunnel that was going to open up into bigger space only for it not to..the whole story is horrible.

Solosunrise · 07/08/2022 16:55

Big spiders and deep dark water. Beautiful yet terrifying

Yes I find this fascinating and terrifying too

the sea frightens me

Just leaving this here for the lake-lovers. 4th set of human remains discovered in as many months as drought makes the waters recede...

Dr Pimple Popper. I don’t seek it out, but if I’m flipping through the channels and find it, I watch to see how long I can bear it. She always compares the contents of her patients’ massive cysts to “oatmeal”. Truly revolting but strangely compelling.

Same.

Although I find her hugely compassionate and really lovely with people. I know she’s making a TV show and it’s in her interests to seem nice and everything but there’s something really caring and positive about her energy and personality. It sort of counterbalances all the cysts and abscesses!

lurchermummy · 07/08/2022 17:31

@appleaday12 I had to google image search that and now I wish I hadn't - there is a similar one at Ladybower reservoir near Sheffield. Stuff of nightmares!

InFiveMins · 07/08/2022 18:13

The city of Pripyat, Ukraine. There's something really eerie seeing the old photos of it as a normal city full of people, and then it just left completely abandoned.

Also - abandoned themeparks. There is one near me that we used to visit when I was a child. I have so many good memories of it being a fun, vibrant place - and now it's just wasteland. Creeps me out but fascinates me at the same time.
