How often do you put sunscreen on your face?

I put factor 50 SPF on my face every day, irrespective of weather. I'm hoping it will make a difference to my skin when I'm older, as I'm very low maintenance and adding this additional step to my morning routine is a bother. But I persevere because it seems SPF is the single best thing you can do for your skin.

Anyone else? Or do most people only apply SPF to their face if they go out/on holiday?

Never. Is that a thing?

It’s nasty and greasy surely you’d just get a spotty face
not been on holiday for a long time but probably would if I was away

Only if you don't wash it off properly
There are many that aren't greasy at all, gel formulas etc and SPF has improved a lot

Thejugglestruggle · 05/08/2022 13:05

Everyday. Factor 30 in my moisturiser which I put on every morning

Delatron · 05/08/2022 13:18

Sun cream only needs to be reapplied hourly if you are lying in the sun. For UVA protection an application in the morning and once again at lunch is enough for incremental, being outside a bit , damage. I would always reapply before taking the dog for a walk for example. But not at 4pm if I wasn’t planning on going out again that day.

Those using just a moisturiser need to check if it has UVA protection in it (if you care about ageing). UVB are the burning rays. It needs to be braid spectrum with a good UVA star rating.

Delatron · 05/08/2022 13:20

Broad

RampantIvy · 05/08/2022 13:22

Influenced by this thread I remembered to put some SPF30 primer on my face this morning.

LondonQueen · 05/08/2022 13:23

Daily.

Phoebesgift · 05/08/2022 13:43

I haven't the time to be applying sunblock more than once a day. Some of you seem quite obsessed with it.

Factor 50 every day.

I've had skin cancer and it was only caught because of a chance remark made to me. The NHS do not mess with that stuff. It's not a pretty little scar, it's a proper dig it out with very large margins plus lymph nodes removed to be on the safe side. Recovery time is significant and the scarring is large (think 10cm scar, several cms deep for a tiny 6mm mole). I also had an aggressive type of cancer and couldn't get an operation for six months. Imagine living with that. I would put a brick through my local tanning shop window if I could.

Same for me - I've had two BCCs removed from my face, one of which has left obvious scars.

Celtic skin, sun damage when I was younger - now it's factor 50 every day.

Do you put your sunscreen on before or after makeup?

I always think "I should be reapplying now" during the day, but on days I've got makeup on it feels tricky...

Sun screen is the last step of skin care before makeup

Garnier also do an over makeup spray which is great for touch ups

SavingsThreads · 05/08/2022 13:03

People putting it on every morning, are you using an 8 Hour one and reapplying? Or a standard one and putting on every hour? Otherwise what's the point?

Factor 50 first thing and then a F50 spray (Kate Somerville) at lunchtime and then again around 6pm if out straight from work (in summer)

TrueNorthernBird · 05/08/2022 15:11

Should add - I use a broad spectrum F50 365 days of the year. Spray top ups from April / May to around September and sunny winter days

@Phoebesgift not obsessed, just don't want skin cancer (Irish, moley and a stong, close, history of cancer in family) nor wrinkles / brown spots.

Delatron · 05/08/2022 15:24

The thing is we can’t change our genetics - I have very Celtic skin and am freckly so won’t age well. But we can control sun damage which is one of the leading causes of skin ageing.

I may be more relaxed if I had olive/ darker skin to be honest.

mylittleyumyum · 05/08/2022 15:44

Occasionally a sun-stick under my eyes/swiped down my nose if I'm in a hot country. I'm brown, 40's, unlined, smooth skin.

fantasmasgoria1 · 05/08/2022 16:38

Factor 50 if I am leaving the house

IRememberXanadu · 05/08/2022 17:54

Those of you who apply SPF on your hands, do you reapply it every time you wash your hands? I wash mine many times a day.

No sun cream at all unless I'm going out on a hot sunny day and I use SPF30 all over.

I don't spend much time outdoors, if I do, I'm in the shade.

lOPAS · 05/08/2022 19:57

Hardly ever. I hate the sun and actively avoid being in it. I'd never sit in the garden or on a beach.

51 and no wrinkles as yet.

larkstar · 06/08/2022 01:16

We put some on pretty much everyday - we share dog walking and both garden so we're out most days - I use the SPF30 - face, arms, legs, neck - my wife uses the SPF50 as her skin is so easily set off by exposure to the sun - she has rosacea - she uses it all year round - bar say, about the 2 months either side of xmas, I use it most of the time. We use the Altruist sun-cream.

XenoBitch · 06/08/2022 03:25

In the summer, SPF 50 on my face, chest and hand. Rest of the year, SPF 30.

I can tell when I need to reapply. You can feel the sun burning your skin.

My mum and sister spent year with zero sun protection, laying half naked in the garden, and gothy me hid indoors. Who has the better skin now? Not them.

portinahurry · 06/08/2022 03:26

Everyday since I was 15, a dermatologist told me to as I have freckles. I'm 46 now and the difference between me and my younger sisters (who laughed and still tried to tan - it doesn't happen for us, they just burnt) is very noticeable now. Definitely worth putting on!

Phoebesgift · 10/08/2022 23:24

Do those of you who smother spf 50 on daily, do you also use fake tan for a golden glow or stay naturally pale and interesting? Just curious...

Pale. I don't tan naturally so fake tan looks daft on me

Stickmansmum · 10/08/2022 23:55

Only if there’s a risk of burning and I won’t be able to shade my skin.

I honestly think the chemicals in sunscreen should be for rare occasions only. A necessary evil. No way would I put it on daily.

Im just amazed at how fucked up marketing to women is.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 11/08/2022 00:04

Never but wear foundation with factor 20..
