How often do you put sunscreen on your face?

I put factor 50 SPF on my face every day, irrespective of weather. I'm hoping it will make a difference to my skin when I'm older, as I'm very low maintenance and adding this additional step to my morning routine is a bother. But I persevere because it seems SPF is the single best thing you can do for your skin.

Anyone else? Or do most people only apply SPF to their face if they go out/on holiday?

So wait, the consensus is now that daylight causes ageing? Not ... ageing?

(I'm not being snarky, I just don't get it - is the idea that someone who lived indoors forever would look perpetually young?)

I think it's more that skin damage from the sun can cause premature aging.

TheGetaway · 05/08/2022 07:38

SPF40 each day increased to 50 if I’m outside all day and it’s sunny.

TheGetaway · 05/08/2022 07:40

It’s not just about wrinkles though.

I had brown pigment damage but it’s all gone now.

F50 every day as last step-in skin care before make up. Then top up with a spray at lunchtime.

Cheerfulcharlie · 05/08/2022 08:03

Is everyone who wears SPF 50 really doing this throughout the winter too? What about vitamin D?

Pumpkinsanddaisies · 05/08/2022 08:08

Only if I’m on holiday in a hot country sun bathing or I’m going to be outside most of the day on a hot day in England because I hate getting a sunburnt nose. So rarely. But I don’t particularly give a toss about wrinkles and ageing 🤷‍♀️

YellowMonday · 05/08/2022 08:15

SPF 50 twice daily. Top up at lunch. Additional top up after sweating, gym, etc if during the day. All year round.

I'm 35 and really happy at how my skin is aging. I'm the only one in my friendship group who is religious about SPF, and it shows (I'm in AUS and UV is a killer down under). Lots of these friends are now using SPF, but it can't fix the existing sun damage.

ItsMutinyontheBunty · 05/08/2022 08:17

Factor 30 in my BB cream..but I had skin cancer on my face before I was 40 (pretty rare, the doctors kept saying I was “very young” to have that kind of cancer), so I’m very careful now!

nokitchen · 05/08/2022 08:17

Factor 50 every day of the year. I reapply at lunchtime if it's super sunny. I'm outside every day for several hours in full sun. Even with the sunscreen my face has clearly caught the sun and I have clear sun glass marks. I had skin cancer a couple of years ago and keen not to repeat that

mamatoTails · 05/08/2022 08:18

Daily, spf 50, live abroad in the sun so feel it's important.
In U.K. i rarely did, but wish I had!

Delatron · 05/08/2022 08:19

@Cheerfulcharlie You can’t get vitamin D from the sun in winter here or from Oct-March. But UVA rays are just as strong in the winter as summer and these are the rays that cause ageing.

I expose arms and legs without cream for about 20 minutes per day when I can from April - Oct. Then supplement in winter. Had vitamin D levels checked and they’re good. Best to get vitamin D through other parts of the body than the face (larger surface area). Yea

Delatron · 05/08/2022 08:19

Random yea at the end!

5zeds · 05/08/2022 08:20

Never. Well if I went to the beach on holiday I guess but normally never. I’m early 50s and not as wrinkly as most people my age.

Heatherjayne1972 · 05/08/2022 08:21

Never. Is that a thing?

It’s nasty and greasy surely you’d just get a spotty face
not been on holiday for a long time but probably would if I was away

Delatron · 05/08/2022 08:21

If you don’t give a toss about ageing and wrinkles then I concede spf 50 every day is probably not necessary.

I use tretinoin so have to be careful with my face.

TeachesOfPeaches · 05/08/2022 08:22

SPF 15 everyday in my moisturiser

daisyjgrey · 05/08/2022 08:22

Every day.

AuntieMarys · 05/08/2022 08:26

I wear a daily SPF moisturiser factor 50. I jave roseacea and the sun is a nightmare for my skin

CMOTDibbler · 05/08/2022 09:19

I am massively sun sensitive (I have always burnt very easily, but now its a whole new world of issues) so I wear spf 50 moisturiser all year round, hand cream with spf 20, and wear specific suncream when going out (again spf 50) and sun protection clothing and hat. I use the Ambre Solaire mist over makeup and as an easy top up though its not enough on its own.
I'm 50 and my skin is fab age wise, but I would like to be a little less covered up!

DappledThings · 05/08/2022 10:20

Only if it is really sunny and I'm going to be out for over an hour consistently. So popping in and out of shops for that hour I'd not bother.

I'm not bothered about ageing.

LolaJ87 · 05/08/2022 10:52

Every day! I put it on every morning before I bring the dog out, no matter the weather. I use either Biore watery essence or the La Roche Posay anti-shine gel, neither leave my face feeling sticky after a minute.

If I'm out lots in sunny weather I'll top up with the La Roche Posay face mist as needed. It's weightless and goes on over makeup.

I mainly take such good care of my skin as there is skin cancer in my family, but the fact I'm very unlined for 35 is a nice bonus!

I supplement because I'm deficient anyway with or without vitamin d (my office is basically inside an indoors so no windows to outside)

PeloAddict · 05/08/2022 11:52

Sorry that should have said with or without SPF! I was tested by the GP and my levels were about 10 so had a high dose course

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 05/08/2022 11:55

This thread isn’t going to be representative of the population.

It’s like the ‘how much alcohol do you drink?’ threads always see a stampede of tee-totallers or the ‘one Bailey’s at xmas’ posters. Or the 'when will your mortgage be paid off?' threads attract those 35 year olds who own their homes outright.

This thread has alerted all the vain skincare nerds. I too am a vain skincare nerd so I can say that.

SavingsThreads · 05/08/2022 13:03

People putting it on every morning, are you using an 8 Hour one and reapplying? Or a standard one and putting on every hour? Otherwise what's the point?
