How often do you put sunscreen on your face?

I put factor 50 SPF on my face every day, irrespective of weather. I'm hoping it will make a difference to my skin when I'm older, as I'm very low maintenance and adding this additional step to my morning routine is a bother. But I persevere because it seems SPF is the single best thing you can do for your skin.

Anyone else? Or do most people only apply SPF to their face if they go out/on holiday?

Factor 50 every day.

I've had skin cancer and it was only caught because of a chance remark made to me. The NHS do not mess with that stuff. It's not a pretty little scar, it's a proper dig it out with very large margins plus lymph nodes removed to be on the safe side. Recovery time is significant and the scarring is large (think 10cm scar, several cms deep for a tiny 6mm mole). I also had an aggressive type of cancer and couldn't get an operation for six months. Imagine living with that. I would put a brick through my local tanning shop window if I could.

Whataboutno · 04/08/2022 23:08

I never use any unless in the sun on holiday or in the garden if it's particularly hot. No wonder I'm aging so fast!

Factor 50 every day, hat/parasol if out in the sun

Anything under factor 50 is not worth the bother.

Cats23 · 04/08/2022 23:11

I usually put factor 50 on, when its sunny out.
NOT TODAY....
and now I'm the most burnt Ive ever been!!!!!!!!

justasking111 · 04/08/2022 23:13

I use spf moisture and foundation. But I've always worn big hats after reading Joan Collins beauty book decades ago.

DoubleShotEspresso · 04/08/2022 23:17

Yes. Daily. Factor 50 under make-up. Always even if I'm not leaving home which I know makes no sense to many but I feel it if I don't even in winter

MarpleFan · 04/08/2022 23:21

Factor 50 under make up, my make up also has factor 50 and then I top up with a spray during the day. Factor 30 on the rest of my body.

ThisIsNotThePostYourLookingFor · 04/08/2022 23:24

i use face moisturiser every day with spf 25 in it

PeloAddict · 04/08/2022 23:25

Factor 50 as I use tretinoin

Barrachocolate · 04/08/2022 23:42

Daily on my face, neck and hands. I use retinol so Factor 50 with a broad spectrum is a must. I wear a cream lotion under my makeup and topped up with a spray every 2-3 hours.

The spray is La roche-posay invisible Anthelios, the aerosol not the liquid. It doesn't smudge makeup! Best sun protection ever!

I apply suncream to my full body on really hot days. Clothes do not protect you from rays unless designed to do so. Those worried about not getting enough vitamin D, there are many areas that will still be exposed to rays even when wearing suncream. Areas like the scalp, eyes etc.

Adversity · 05/08/2022 00:48

Factor 20 in my face cream every day, I wear a hat often. I’m mixed race and tan very easily. DH has been away, I have been gardening and he was wow your tanned, I have hardly been in the sun. I said did you forget I’m not white you twit.

womaninatightspot · 05/08/2022 00:54

I use a moisturiser which is 30spf will add sunscreen if sunny and I’m out a lot. Scotland so tendays of the year.

I use an spf 15 moisturiser if I'll be outside for more than an hour or so in summer. I'll use something stronger if I'll be outside all day.

I refuse to believe that people who are mostly indoors need to waste time and money on sun screen in winter in UK or for short periods in summer.

All the research that says you do was funded by the skincare industry. Funny that.

FWIW, I'm 52, eat well and exercise regularly and people are often surprised at my age.

🤦🏾‍♀️

lickenchugget · 05/08/2022 03:56

Every day since I’ve started using products with high concentrations of retinol. Not sure I’m looking any younger, but I had also noticed that any tan my older skin was just looking leathery, so embracing the sunblock!

LunaTheCat · 05/08/2022 04:04

Cary on OP.
I am 57 and have done every day since early 20’s - it has worked! I am frequently complemented.
it’s cheaper than botox

canellini · 05/08/2022 04:15

Rarely- summer or sunny days when I'm out all day only. Are men doing this too? Or is it only women who need to be so carefully protected? Are your kids all using sunscreen every day?

RaisinGhost · 05/08/2022 05:45

I use sunscreen on my face every daily as part of my morning routine, and reapply if I'm going to be out in the sun for a while.

However, my DH has also done this for many years. He is so careful, literally never goes without sunscreen. He is 12 years older than me and aged 50. His skin looks like every other 50 year old. The same or worse as friends of his who rarely if ever wear sunscreen. Now this is a sample of one obviously. But it has made me wonder. Lots of exposure to uv can cause skin to age quicker, eg, sun bathing, but day to day exposure? I don't know now.

bigTillyMint · 05/08/2022 05:54

I started putting spf50 on my face most sunny days in SELondon and on holiday a few years ago (had deffo turned 50 by then!) and have put suncream on my face previously (but not in my 20s - anyone remember Hawaiian Tropic?!)

My skin isn’t terrible yet, but not as good as my mums was at 80+ - she never went in the sun at all!

nottalot · 05/08/2022 06:28

So wait, the consensus is now that daylight causes ageing? Not ... ageing?

(I'm not being snarky, I just don't get it - is the idea that someone who lived indoors forever would look perpetually young?)

StrangeCondition · 05/08/2022 07:19

Only if spending any time in the sun and only in summer/holidays. Regularly get told I look younger than my years and I have no noticeable sun damage

Fairyliz · 05/08/2022 07:29

I’m in my 60’s and when I was young nobody used sun cream. Not sure if it had not been invented or if it was just too expensive for ordinary people.

Some of my friends my age are very wrinkly, whilst some have lovely skin. I think it’s more to do with your genes than anything you put on it. Eg the very oily acne prone skin seems to age better than someone who has perfect skin at 20.

Climbingthelaundrymountain · 05/08/2022 07:29

Most days as I work with children and we spend a fair amount of time outside and when we put suncream on them I also put it on myself. And my own children are outdoorsy so we are out a lot.

KeyboardWarriorsUnite · 05/08/2022 07:33

Very rarely. The moisturiser I use currently has factor 15 I think, but I've only been using that for the last couple of years. I don't think it has been an aging issue for me, as people often tell me they think I am younger than I am.

OldGreyAppleTest · 05/08/2022 07:34

SPF 50 all over my face every day!
