How often do you put sunscreen on your face?

I put factor 50 SPF on my face every day, irrespective of weather. I'm hoping it will make a difference to my skin when I'm older, as I'm very low maintenance and adding this additional step to my morning routine is a bother. But I persevere because it seems SPF is the single best thing you can do for your skin.

Anyone else? Or do most people only apply SPF to their face if they go out/on holiday?

My moisturiser has factor 15 and I try not to be in the sun much (walk on shady side of the street etc).
If I use a foundation that's a physical barrier too.
I make sure to do my décolletage after seeing my mil's who spent every summer in Ibiza for 40 years!
Of course if in Spain or somewhere it's spf 30, reapplied as needed.

Do you put your sunscreen on before or after makeup?

I always think "I should be reapplying now" during the day, but on days I've got makeup on it feels tricky...

Icecreamclassic · 04/08/2022 17:31

I use an spf 15 moisturiser if I'll be outside for more than an hour or so in summer. I'll use something stronger if I'll be outside all day.

I refuse to believe that people who are mostly indoors need to waste time and money on sun screen in winter in UK or for short periods in summer.

All the research that says you do was funded by the skincare industry. Funny that.

FWIW, I'm 52, eat well and exercise regularly and people are often surprised at my age.

Use something containing spf every day. We now understand that we are protecting ourselves from uva rays from light (which are ageing) rather than just uvb rays which are the ones that burn. If I know that I am going to be outside a lot I apply Ultrasun which does not need to be reapplied. Otherwise I use spf30 moisturiser plus spf40 foundation and will spray over the top a couple of times throughout the day. I do sometimes apply a separate spf50 after moisturiser but this can pill depending on what is going on top.

IRememberXanadu · 04/08/2022 17:37

The issue with make up with SPF in it is that we don't apply enough for the SPF to work. I apply my SPF under make up but on top of all skin care. However if I'm wearing make up I do not reapply SPF as that would mess up my make up.

I always wear moisturiser and foundation with an SPF of 15-30. And March -
September I used a separate SPF 30 - 50

I have a spray you can use over make up

chilliesandspices · 04/08/2022 18:20

I wear it every day. I'm very very pale, susceptible to freckles and use an AHA toner. If I'm actually out in the sun for a while I reapply every hour. On a normal day I'm mostly inside or in the shade.

So do I. I WFH, and in winter I might not set foot outside for several days. My desk is not by a window, and light levels are usually so low that I need to put the light on all day. I just don't feel that I need to slap SPF 50 on my face on days like that.

Interesting.

Factor 50 on face every day reapplied at some point. I’m outside quite a bit.

UVA are the ageing rays and they are present at the same strength all year round - and the same at all latitudes. They penetrate clouds and windows.

So if you care about ageing you need SPF every day. Nothing to do with sun cream companies.
You won’t get enough from make up as you wouldn’t use enough.

I don’t put it on my body though as I try and get a bit of vitamin D so only if I’m sunshine for hours.

woodhill · 04/08/2022 22:08

Everyday now

UxbridgeVoteBJOut · 04/08/2022 22:09

Maybe twice a week in summer? More often if fiercely sunny.
The current potions in cupboard are spf 5-50

I'm outside maybe 4 hours/day, as much as possible truly, especially midday or when sunny.

Never apply spf in winter.

Farawayfromhere · 04/08/2022 22:09

I have put factor 50 on my face and neck every day since I was about 25. I’m hoping I will look extremely youthful when I’m old. I am pretty low maintenance aside from this.

Oh could you share please? I need to get one for over makeup

woodhill · 04/08/2022 22:13

Yes I would like one too

I just one that lasts all day.

CourtneeLuv · 04/08/2022 22:16

Factor 50 Every. Single. Day. Religiously.

Coastalcreeksider · 04/08/2022 22:23

Skin cancer means SPF50 every single day. Don't really want to repeat the reconstructive surgery to my face ever again if I can help it. 😥

Fusillage · 04/08/2022 22:24

Any recommendations? I really know I should do it but I cannot abide the accompanying eye sting!

bippityboppity87 · 04/08/2022 22:59

Spf factor 50 everyday no exceptions. All through the year. I have naturally pale freckly skin that burns in 18° heat for half an hour. So for me, it's a necessity

@Fusillage Think use this, and it's been pretty good. No eye stinging

Factor 50 every day.

Maytodecember · 04/08/2022 23:02

Factor 50 daily as it keeps the roseacea at bay.

Tougherpolicies · 04/08/2022 23:03

Every single day under make up but suspect I've left it rather too late

Pleasecouldihavesomeadvice · 04/08/2022 23:06

Every day. Then I reapply with a sunscreen mist if I’m going out/out and about.

spf in your makeup is not enough

willowstar · 04/08/2022 23:08

My moisturiser has SPF 15. I use that every day in the summer months but not in winter. I reapply if out in the sun. I look better with a bit of a tan. I don't want to get skin cancer but similarly don't want to avoid sun altogether. I have nursed very old people for decades...no amount of skin care really makes a difference I don't think. Older faces are beautiful. I don't mind too much about my wrinkling face.
