Well that's a surprise

OP posts:

I'd have liked it better if she had actually shown a wide range of body types and hadn't called other women "skin and bones".

SeasonalNamechange · 28/07/2022 10:22

I won't be showing my daughters that shite!

One daughter has bigger breasts. You just shamed them right there!

She did, on the runway section. I think it is a great talking point for young girls - expose the nonsense commercial and peer pressure!

alnawire · 28/07/2022 10:36

Why do you think this is something we should be showing our daughters?

The women on the runway section were a lot smaller than many of the women I see in real life.

girlmom21 · 28/07/2022 10:41

It's a catchy song but I don't think it's that surprising or empowering or whatever else.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 28/07/2022 10:41

This is brilliant! Really funny, clever, love the normal size girls including the wheelchair bound.

dostyh · 28/07/2022 10:41

and?

dostyh · 28/07/2022 10:42

I like the inclusion of the girl in the wheelchair as I think disability is still very underrepresented in our media.

slashlover · 28/07/2022 10:42

Also, the "skin and bone with big boobs" is incorrect as they only go up to a D or E cup.

You can't moan about their sizing and then not show diversity of sizing in the video.

Playplayaway · 28/07/2022 10:43

A good message with good intent but there's a spectrum of 'healthy' shapes and sizes and they're not all represented here. Some women are naturally very slim and big boobed but that doesn't mean they're mentally ill or have been swayed by peer pressure or commercialism.

dostyh · 28/07/2022 10:45

I'm slim with big boobs (no ass though), how did you interpret this as shaming them? VS models often have implants & wear fillets so does represent a narrow body image. Nothing shaming about acknowledging that.

In the same way I don't agree highlighting the issue with BBLs & the Kardashian influence is shaming those with big bums.

dostyh · 28/07/2022 10:46

@slashlover but she did show diversity, she she showed different body types?

I don't think showing one slim, pretty girl in a wheelchair is really very inclusive of those with disabilities to be honest. I think it screams "look at us pretending to be inclusive".

dostyh · 28/07/2022 10:50

It's more inclusive than leaving it out though. What disability representation would you have approved of?

girlmom21 · 28/07/2022 10:51

dostyh · 28/07/2022 10:50

Well I think it would've been better to include her the whole way as opposed to highlighting her as different, to be honest.

dostyh · 28/07/2022 10:52

and then you would have felt it wasn't performative? because she would still be slim & pretty

And she wouldn't have been highlighted as being different.

Dancers in music videos are generally slim and pretty.

The "plus size" women highlighted were still relatively small. also, why were they the only ones in underwear? Just seems a tad tokenistic to me.

Like when bra shops say they have bigger sizes but they actually stop at a G cup. Or shops say they now stock plus sizes but it's in a fifth of their range.

dostyh · 28/07/2022 11:02

And she wouldn't have been highlighted as being different.

and you don't think the wheelchair would be noticeable?

Dancers in music videos are generally slim and pretty.

they tend to be young so therefore pretty & often toned because dancing is hard work. In terms of size depends on the music you are into. I'm not sure why that's particularly relevant though. Being slim doesn't mean you don't have body insecurities.

Hotpinkangel19 · 28/07/2022 11:06

Think it's rubbish tbh. My 16 year old is naturally thin with big breasts - as are a few of her friends. Don't think 'skin and bone' is an inclusive way to describe them. Plus the wheelchair is a bit 🙄 obviously brought in for effect. Maybe they should have used real examples, not staged. Not worth watching imo. Wonder if it's been put on just for views.

I'm not saying the wheelchair shouldn't be noticeable. Im saying it should be normal and not highlighted as an 'oh aren't we good letting a wheelchair user join in'. Either be fully inclusive or be exclusive. Don't virtue signal and pretend to be inclusive.

I think you're reading things that I haven't said and we're clearly not going to agree on that basis.

It's ok to have different opinions.

dostyh · 28/07/2022 11:07

They didn't look like catwalk models though which I assume was the point. What size do you think they should have been? They were other dancers in bikini tops.

Most plus size models are incredibly beautiful & no bigger than a size 14 so representative of society but I still think it's good to have them in magazines & on the catwalks.

GirlInACountrySong · 28/07/2022 11:07

Skin and bone!?

Jeez

No thanks. A load of rubbish
