Well that's a surprise

I cant tell if those dancers are obese, overweight doesn't = obese. Why are you equating a VS model with a slim person? most of the shows involve people with BMIs that are underweight. Slim doesn't equal underweight.

AWobABobBob · 28/07/2022 11:37

God! Reading these comments is exhausting. So fucking whiney! Do MNers wake up with a stick up their arse or are they just perpetually aggrieved?

"They didn't show enough variety of bodies...they shamed big boobed women...there's not enough disabled people shown".

I loved this video. The message was great - we shouldn't be sexualised or body shamed by profiteering corporations, particularly those run by old, white men. I liked the disabled and healthy women represented in this video!

durellh · 28/07/2022 11:42

I'm really confused as to why people are suggesting slim equals looking like a catwalk model, it doesn't. Take your average 10 yr old girl & stretch them by a foot to get a VS model proportions.

VikkisBikini · 28/07/2022 11:46

I have shared the video with my dds and they have already shared it on the SM.

alnawire · 28/07/2022 11:46

Jax is a singer not an influencer

Fair enough. The question is still the same though. Why would anyone encourage their child to be influenced by this? I'm spending my time teaching my children 'not' to take anything they see on TikTok and the like seriously. There are very real and good legitimate resources out there for young people. This isn't one of them.

Because it's rebellious in a catchy and witty way and it's a good message to show that some old probably pervy man (in Ohio 😂) is cashing in on young unsuspecting girls' body issues. It's a fun song and the dance routine works with the music. It's inclusive and empowered, a bit cheeky but with substance, what's not to like? I hope the next generation of women's and girls' underwear products and its marketing will be less sexist than VS. I'm quite sure university lecturers will use this video as part of their teaching. I have already forwarded it to a fashion design visiting lecturer and a marketing and PR lecturer I am friends with. YouTube videos are very often used in university teaching. It's part of the culture around us and can teach us a lot if watched critically and discussed.

Nekomata · 28/07/2022 11:57

VS used to be a truly horrible company but they had an image overhaul several years ago. They got rid of the Angels and stopped doing the runway shows, started selling plus sizes and now use a lot of plus sized women in their catalogues and online. I haven't watched the video, but it seems a bit late to start complaining now when they no longer do this stuff. What are they trying to achieve?

VikkisBikini · 28/07/2022 11:36

@MsFrenchie what's your issues with her using the metaphor 'skin and bones'? It's true the VS models are uncannily skinny and a 'skin and bones' aesthetic is used to market VS products. The video features a range of body shapes. Love the ending too if that's her little girls. Well done Jax!

It’s shaming, no different to calling an overweight something such as lard-arse.

For some reason though some women think that while no-one should ever criticize their shape or looks that it’s fine for them to do it to others.

Good idea I've just shared it to a fashion and marketing graduate and asked her opinion

@VikkisBikini

But how do you help a young teen distinguish between this which people seem to think is a good influence, and the rest of the utter shite that is doing the rounds?

I don't want mine to be influenced by anything a random social media 'personality' has to say. It's hard enough for young people to see the difference so directing them to genuine legitimate sources to learn about this type of thing is much more sensible imo

Nekomata · 28/07/2022 12:05

Here's an article from last year about Victoria's Secret and re-branding i anyone is interested.

I still haven’t seen models who aren’t attractive. Diversity doesn’t seem to expand that far.

I think it's wholly relevant.

durellh · 28/07/2022 12:26

It’s shaming, no different to calling an overweight something such as lard-arse.

Why did VS & similar companies require the models to be so thin though? why did some models have to resort to amphetamines, hormones, liquid diet etc to fit that mould. I don't think anyone is shaming the models but shaming those who expect the models to fit into that mould.

durellh · 28/07/2022 12:35

And yes VS have rebranded and are trying to change their image because its outdated & sales were declining.

I still think brand is synonymous with a rigid beauty standard, they have a long way to go to be seen as modern like Fenty.

VikkisBikini · 28/07/2022 11:21

Sorry! reading comprehension 😫it's on Netflix.

I actually think I might’ve been mistaken in saying Netflix, I think it’s HULU in the states and on Paramount+ in U.K. which I think streams on Sky.

Playplayaway · 28/07/2022 12:39

The first line is

'God I wish somebody had told me when I was younger, that all bodies aren't the same'

So she's telling this young girl/young version of her.

Playplayaway · 28/07/2022 12:40

Sorry that was supposed to quote the poster who was querying about the young girl in the video.

Paramount on sky I looked into its hooked to sky cinema at an introductory price rising to £20 pcm.

I see yet again that the body positivity movement doesn't extend to slim women. VS models are also human beings, referring to them as skin and bone to make other women feel better is not OK.
