Well that's a surprise

I see yet again that the body positivity movement doesn't extend to slim women. VS models are also human beings, referring to them as skin and bone to make other women feel better is not OK.

Scroll back and read the posts there's a couple of ex models who have commented.

To be fair not many women can aspire to the perfection demanded in the modelling world.

I suspect their mums worry. My friends son is a male model he uses various methods to achieve the hollowed face waifish look.

It's nothing new. Judy garland, Shelley winters and others have spoken of their struggles back in the forties

It’s shaming, no different to calling an overweight something such as lard-arse.

Why did VS & similar companies require the models to be so thin though? why did some models have to resort to amphetamines, hormones, liquid diet etc to fit that mould. I don't think anyone is shaming the models but shaming those who expect the models to fit into that mould.

The video is shaming them by calling them “skin and bones.”

It’s not on to body-shame someone fat, nor someone thin.

I think it’s safe to assume that few of the women supporting this video are a size six or eight. Sadly many overweight women seem to think it’s fine to shame anyone who isn’t.

justasking111 · 28/07/2022 13:11

The average model is 5 9"and weighs 113 pounds. The clothes drape better from a flat chested model apparently which is why designers prefer to use them

I loved the video. I even felt a bit teary watching it, as someone with lifelong body issues.

sjxoxo · 28/07/2022 13:16

The diversity presented by VS is certainly a point for discussion, but the reason they are trying to claw back their image by ‘adding diversity’ is because the brand, in my mind, was built on presenting ‘sexy’ women in a way that is clearly based on mens sexual fantasies. I also think the pervy link with Jeffrey Epstein ‘scouting’ for them is enough to not make me consider it a worthy brand to buy from. I think they’re firmly stuck in the 90s… I don’t expect they will last another 10 years as they’re way out of touch.

Which is just slightly below the bottom end of the healthy range.

I think the main issue people have here is that being fat has become so normaliséd that even women with a healthy BMI look skinny.

Sadly women in the UK have about the highest BMI in Europe, and some seem to want to act as though this is OK.

Nekomata · 28/07/2022 13:36

This is literally the front page of the VS website.

Whether the re-brand is sincere or not, I have no idea, but I don't see how it doesn't show body diversity.

I guess I'm missing the point somehow.

It’s true though. We have people even on here trying to claim that a BMI of 40 isn’t particularly bad.

I’m thoroughly sick of obese women giving me a hard time because of my shape. It’s as though chocolate cake removes any sense of empathy.

durellh · 28/07/2022 13:57

It's almost a stone under the bottom end! Some people on MNs are so weird about weight.

durellh · 28/07/2022 14:06

@MsFrenchie you sound like you have some issues around body image, hope you work it out.

easyday · 28/07/2022 14:12

My 17 year old daughter barely knows what Victoria Secret is, let alone that there's such a thing as Angels.
But also their underwear is nice and fits up to size 16-18.
The Angels are just publicity, and I don't think one can lay the 'thin models negatively influencing young girls' at their door. Have you seen photos of models from the 40s? Their figures were just as unattainable without corsetry, and there were complaints about it then too.

Not at all, I’m quite a serious climber, so have the right shape for that. Please stop trying to make me feel bad or shaming me for not being fat.

Here's an article from last year about Victoria's Secret and re-branding i anyone is interested.

www.nytimes.com/2021/06/16/business/victorias-secret-collective-megan-rapinoe.html

This is interesting! I don't buy it though. I really dislike the trend of getting famous and accomplished women to sell lingerie. I get it, women are more than the sex appeal that their bodies have to men - but why do they think that seeing these women in lingerie is empowering? To me it screams yes you might be a great footballer, but we still want you to be sexy.

which illustrates my point 😆

fdgdfgdfgdfg · 28/07/2022 14:34

Well that was the cringiest thing I've ever seen

PegasusReturns · 28/07/2022 14:39

Think it's rubbish tbh. My 16 year old is naturally thin with big breasts - as are a few of her friends. Don't think 'skin and bone' is an inclusive way to describe them

Why would you assume “skins and bones” is synonymous with “naturally thin” in this context. VS use of models with disorderd eating is well documented.

PegasusReturns · 28/07/2022 14:48

This is not about being “naturally slim”.

VS models were - until very recently - dangerously thin. They starved and drugged themselves even withholding water in the days before a runway show.

FAQs · 28/07/2022 14:53

@MsFrenchie my 18 year old daughter is a size 4 - 6 and is always getting comments from people re her size, she works in a cafe at the weekend and her employer has teased her, customers have also made comments it’s slowly chipping away her confidence sadly, if it was the other way people would be backing her up, her slimness seems to make her fair game sadly.

Siepie · 28/07/2022 14:55

I'd heard the song before but the video won't load on my broken WiFi! I like the song.

I don't think that the "selling skin and bones" line is a criticism of the models themselves, but of the company, who promoted that as the (only) way to be attractive.

And either way, it's not about naturally thin women with healthy BMIs. Adriana Lima said that when she modelled for VS, she had to eat no solid food for over a week and no water for a day before every show in order to look thin enough. She'd have probably passed out if she tried to join a PP at climbing! Teenage girls shouldn't feel like they need to starve themselves to be attractive.

I'd never thought about who owns VS before, but I also think it's good to highlight that even a company so based around women is actually there to make a profit for men.

Sorry for the double post! I said I had WiFi issues 😂

The background to this is that Jax was looking after a neighbour's kid (aged 11 or similar) who tried to go shopping in a Victoria's Secret store and the kid's friends were mean bullies by saying that the kid was flat chested and so on. It's on Jax's TicTok feed.
